Now, this goes both ways. I detest the people moaning about it not being perfect out of box (seen some call the old 1/100 NG akatsuki better, like seriously??), but when bandai's releases have been as consistently good as they have been, it sets a precedent. Like it or hate it, the old RG frame does loosen up over time quite badly - my Amatsu Mina can attest to that. It all comes down to the question of who the model is for, and this one clearly isn't for newbie out-of-box builders.

I would say that the NG 1/100 is mostly more bang for your buck even if its not as brimmed with bells and whistles.

You get the shiranui pack too, but it comes at the cost of a much worse model. Like, those thing's hips are so poorly designed that the legs can barely go 45° out to the sides. For a SEED suit, this is a Big problem.

Honestly, I love the way the kit looks on the Shelf but I feel like this was a case of Bandai doing an arguably better version of what they did with the Tristan. I still love the Akatsuki and the RG is awesome, but just because in lore it's based off of the Strike does not mean it had to carry the worst parts of the Strike's unfortunately cursed Frame. I love the kit and I still would rather take the time and build the RG with some minor modifications to have on my shelf over the NG. Yes, it still comes with some caveats and yes I would've rather them have done a RG 2.0 Strike and then released the Akatsuki using that Frame down the line, but I'm glad we still got an RG Akatsuki period. Even more glad that other than the Early Real Grade Shenanigans it's actually still a pretty good kit and looks stunning enough to draw eyes immediately to the shelf it's on. Do I still wish I didn't have to fork over extra P-Bandai Money for the Shiranui on the RG though? Hell Yeah.

Not debating, but there’s two parts of tightening a joint, joints that were loose due to tolerances, and joints that loosen from parts stretching due to insufficient material strength. The latter will be a temporary fix. I’m usually worried that it will be the latter issue. That said, if we acknowledge that the frame is fragile/weak, the stand that Bandai was wise enough to include fixes that issue, and then the legs are just decorative.

They later on realised that the kit’s hips can’t handle the extra weight of the Zeus Silhouette, so they put a hip base adapter that can keep the legs spread even with the gigantic mobile armour put on.

@ both are problems, but the ball joints take longer to be as loose as the pegs, so there’s no reason to take the balls off the sockets to risk loosening them up yourself. Sometimes trying to fix a problem before it even occurs will create the problem itself.

The coolest part of the real grade line was cut because a bunch of children kept throwing their kits at the wall and got surprised when they got loose. It's simply a skill issue. Honestly, besides the Red Frames shoulders non of my early RG frames loosened up to the point where any kind of measure is needed so far. RG Gramps 1.0 was my second kit ever build and I am scratching my head to this day why so many people complain about it.

If the hip joints are a peg it should be easy enough. The old full prebuilt inner frame that couldn't even be disassembled was just awful though, and designs that aren't likely to get new kits like Exia and the GP Gundams being stuck with that thing as their most modern releases doesn't spark joy. I can't really blame people for being upset at the prospect of seeing any part of that abomination on a new release.

Advanced MS joint was never a legitimate issue and was the coolest part of the RG line that was cut due to peoples inadequacies. AKA skill issue. It's a model not a toy. My RG GP01 and RG MK II frames are tighter than most of the high grades that I've built. And its easy enough to tighten things up. Even my RG Sinanju is as solid as a brick with 12 seconds of added effort. It's simply a skill issue.

So which is it? My Mk-II's leg frame even came broken and I had to fix it with a piece of paper clip, was a quality control problem a skill issue? Attaching the front skirts to the inner frame so that the RG Exia can barely even raise its legs? Or using a material that warps over time so that the shoulder clips naturally fall off and need constant fixing? "IT'S A MODEL KIT!" is not an excuse for poor design. Your Mk-II is tight? Your Sinanju is solid as a brick? Then do this: Attach the shield to the left arm, make sure the shoulder is in a neutral position, then raise the arm outward. Tell us what happens.

Initially, I was disappointed that they went back to using the rg strike gundams pre-built inner frame, but after thinking about it it's not all that bad. Kits tend to get loose because people touch and pose them a lot, but since this kit is a fingerprint magnet anyway most people aren't going to be reposing it that much. The inner frame also probably cuts down on the cost thats already inflated due to the overall price increases at bandai this year and the gold plating (though I would still would rather they fully commit to making a new inner frame or at least do something similar to the rg freedom gcp but thats just me). The kit even has a stand in the box to help remedy the bad hip joints, which is sort of a band-aid fix but it does help. I understand people's frustrations on this kit being basically an early rg released 10 years too late, but I think alot of these issues can be blamed on bad circumstances. Personally I see this kit as a reminder that even if a lot of modern gunpla are action figure quality, they are model kits at the end of the day, and most fixes this kit needs are standard for many other model kit companies.

Yeah I have the RG Phenex, and despite the RG Unicorn frame having superb articulations and solidity, I rarely aver touch it to repose, like may once a month or dusting and twice a year for reposing because I don’t want my fingerprints on it and I’m too lazy to put gloves on every time lol

I had rg perfect strike a few years back and it was still fine, just that I left it standing with the backpack held by action base. Some kits are just not meant to be manhandled and still works fine.

as a straight builder i don't understand why some people are so opposed to just putting a dab of superglue on loose joints, i'd understand if the problem was in the knees where they can't be dissasembled but the ball joint you can just remove, thicken, and connect back in. yesterday i just went back and dissassembled my rg sinanju to thicken some joints and for the first time in the year i've had it for he can finally stand up without a stick up it's butt.

Thank you krowjesus. When I saw Mecha bend its limb 40 times and then it sagged, i was like who tf does that? It looks majestic but just a bit too expensive for my taste. Reminds me of the disappointment of that genious head line black Kampfer. No updates to the ancient frame and had shitty plastic but with a little paint and love made it 10/10.

That sort of pen is basically just a super glue in marker form. So in a nutshell, it should work since I did the same thing to my RG Exia's left hip and it remained sturdy to this day.

I'm on a fence about RG Akatsuki(although I kinda lean toward disappointment because of lose hip joint). I get where both side of the argument coming from like really. I understand people who disappointed because of the usage of advance MS joint and they have to fix it themself because the kit isn't cheap at all, of course they would expect something as good as it can be straight out of the box. the "you can just fix it" is also a valid option, because at the end of the day RG Gunpla is still a model kits not an action figure. there will always be something to fix it just the matter of time. overall, funny controversy, totally enjoy it/10

As much as I love Gunpla, I think it holds the builder's hand too much and leaves them as just that, builders, instead of modelers. This is a MODEL KIT not a LEGO set. You are meant to paint, customize, whatever. If something isn't color separated? Learn to paint! something is too loose or too tight? Use lubricant or some kind of thickener. PUT IN THE WORK!!!!! GET THE RESULTS YOU WANT!!!!

First time watching one of your reviews in awhile. I gotta say, hard agree regarding the Oowashi unit, I've always felt that it was the cooler-looking of the two Akatsuki backpacks (the only way they could make it cooler is by giving it a second set of wings like the Ootori backpack IMO). Regarding the frame issues, one thing I've noticed in a lot of the early reviews is that everyone (who has a negative impression) is first intentionally posing/loosening the hip joints, then trying to pose the kit standing. It's like, what exactly do you expect? That a kit that uses older/softer/more rubbery plastic on the inner frame has rock-solid joint tension after extensive use? It doesn't make sense to me. I have all the old Seed/Destiny RGs, and even my RG Aile Strike with its original frame has the same level of joint strength it did back when I first built it in 2011/2012, no modifications or joint tightening done whatsoever. They're display kits, not action figures, and given the scale and more skinny design with smaller joints, it should be expected that they won't hold up to intentional overuse/excessive posing. Also, of all the different Gundam lines, Seed/Destiny kits are easily some of the most top-heavy, with huge backpacks and wings that merit using an action base instead of having the kit freestanding, so that they can be shown spreading their wings in all their glory. I can't imagine anyone would get a kit with an impressive backpack, only to have it posed with the wings folded down long-term (the only Seed kit that might be an exception to this would be any version of the Freedom GCP, which is design specifically for this). Priorities, people...

After watching this review, I'm definitely interested in picking it up. Akatsuki Is one of the most interesting and stunning, mobile suits from this the cosmic era. it was really an such an exciting surprise to find out that they're going to make an RG of it. But then I saw all the reviews that people saying it was bad or it wasn't good. And I was just like, what are you people talking about? I think with certain content creators there's definitely been more of a push to make certain kits seem like they're bad when reality, they're fine. I'll probably wait a couple of months, but i probably will pick this one up. Currently I'm trying to get through more of my backlog before buying more kits.

Sure the RG ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam [Oowashi] uses some portions (some legs & arms) of the Advanced MS Joint 3 which was used in the RG GAT-X105 Aile Strike Gundam, and yea it can be a little loose. But I do agree that many of these reviewers are overblowing things or it might be user error for that super loose thing. But I think this is a great choice for fans; esepecially with the RG ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam [Shiranui] add on set so you might as well get a second set of this kit. And let's be real.... Bandai is very likely do the same with the MG ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam where they'll likely reuse some portions of the MG GAT-X105 Aile Strike Gundam [Ver RM] and I'm sure people will (again) freak out and blow things out of proportion again but I think people will still buy it (like the RG). Personally the MG version is what I'm waiting for.

Wouldn't count on that. The difference is, early RG frames have a really bad reputation, and the strike ver.rm's frame holds up well despite being a decade old. The commotion about the rg isn't necessarily about reusing an old frame, it's more about reusing a 'bad frame.

Sorry, but I'm gonna have to disagree with you here. It's honestly an overpriced golden limp. Even the japnese, the primary market of bandai. Are not happy with how this kit turned out. They tried to defend it at first. But then they retracted their statements later after they had the kit for some time. Even THEY know the kit is bad. And they want bandai to revise it. Because this released was half assed. You don't go from grandpa 2.0 to an architecture that was a massive failure. Which is the ms joint. If you personally like it. Then fine. But don't go around saying that a half assed overpriced product is ok. Because it's absolutely not. You can hate on the other reviewers all you want. But they are not wrong. This kit is simply not good. Sure it's shiny, but it's not worth the price. It's even more scummy that bandai wants you to buy an accessory set, which includes a tiny piece that holds the legs in place.

They love this kit since the MS is a fan favorite. 4 pieces used from a previous kit doesn't mean this is half assed. Gunpla builders are just too spoon fed.

Quite frankly, the loose hips alone disqualifies this thing as a model kit. For the price it asks for, we should not have to do anything to fix the problems it currently has. There’s a reason why we all collectively agreed that the early RG kits were complete crap. This is not the time to give Bandai a pat on the back for reusing the early Advanced MS joints.

@Shay_D_Mann they reused 4 pieces of an older kit. It's not the end of the world. Ppl buy Warhammer kits for $100+, and most of the time, they aren't even color separated.

@Shay_D_Mann Just say you don't know how to tighten a ball joint Also about the price thing You are a damn fool if you think that the more expensive the kit is the less fixing that it needs I wish every kit you built will always have loose joint and hope that you stay whining instead of tightening it like a normal builder should do

I honestly love the older RGs n actually built the strike a couple of months ago, great build tbh. Im sad they did reuse the frame but for a kit like this I don’t really intend on posing it either way(plus I pre ordered the shiranui pack Which comes with a pice to splay the legs) I do kinda wish they went the route where it was built from the ground up but I won’t complain Also what is the brand of the clear coat you used? I saw a ton of those suggestions but I’ve never bought it before

I just used a mr color clear
