I agree. I was gonna say apps like this can be useful but it should be only used as indication of hazards not something to rely on. All technologies in vehicles should never be relied upon. Those blind spot indicators on newer model mirrors scare me because I know there is a driver out there who relies on that to make lane changes. Only one day that bulb will burn out.
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 4 жыл бұрын
@@kyle333halfevil It's likely that within the next 10 years that cars won't have mirrors at all. They'll have cameras giving near complete coverage of what used to be blind spots. Personally, I'd love to be able to use a rear camera to see what's directly behind me when I'm riding, because I've never liked the positioning of my mirrors, either I see most of what's behind me and not enough of the lanes next to me, or I see the lanes next to me and not enough of what's directly behind me. A camera to cover what's directly behind me would help a lot.

The GPS app called Waze tells you if there's stuff in the road or accidents or cops even if there's wild animals on the side of the road, As long as somebody reported it on the app it goes to everybody. It's also super easy to report things. Two or three clicks on the phone.

Yes, lane position is important for the best vision into the corner. Combine this position with where are looking. Based on the painted lines on the road . A left hand corner, look as far forward as you see the line disappearing. Same for a right hand corner. Resist the temptation to look on the road closer to you. We tend to look closer in front of us for objects dropped onto the road. Be forever mindful of these objects but keep your eyes as far forward as you can. Once you master this you be amazed how find the correct line through the corner. It takes concentration and practice. I learnt this technique riding on trails. If you want avoid a rock, a pothole, a trench......don’t look at it. You’ll miss it. Ya look at it you’ll hit it. If there are no lines on the road, use the edge of tar as your left line. Assess the middle of the road for a right hand corner. It works.

Lane position is especially important on two lane roads. If I'm following a car, I use the left side so I can be seen by oncoming cars. If there's no one ahead, I ride on the right side to increase margin for error if a car comes into my lane. For curves I do Outside (maximum visibility), middle (maximum margin for error in case I come in too hot or drift to center line) and middle (again, margin for error). Outside-inside-outside is for track days.

I recently moved from California to N.Carolina. The roads are very different here. Most roads are narrow and single lane each way. This has decreased my options for positioning my bike.It's taking some getting use to. I can't lane split or even pick another lane. Even the main HWYs only have two lanes. But the views are awesome.

Kevin, you’re spot on! I agree with everything you said. Additionally, if I’m on a two lane and see a string of cars coming towards me waiting to pass the slow car in front of them I move to the right track making myself more visible to those cars wanting to pass the guy.

The main reason that's largely not the case in the US is the liability insurance related to on the street instruction. They do talk about lane positioning, but there's no on road test. In some ways, I'd like them to add on street testing, but skills isn't really a problem around here, judgment is and most of the fatalities come from people doing things they know perfectly well not to do. Adding a road test wouldn't appreciably change that.

(not that I am speeding but it is there if you need it). I use it in my car too, one funny feature it has, it can record your own voice for direction, my daughter is now guiding me safely. a great app, thank you for pointing it out to us.

Hey Kevin! Well. to make it really short - for me: to have just the ultimate one position on the road is to get the ultimate way to get into trouble. It takes a whole lot of things under consideration to determine the RIGHT position on the road. And I mean - it is a loooooooooong story about this! For instance: if it's dry - stay on the tires marks. BUT if if it's just started to rain, either pull over for 20-30 minutes (most advisable), or stay in the middle between the tyre marks. Why? oil and all other stuff that's running from the cars out are more likely to condense in the center of the vehicle, rather than in the tire lanes. But during the rain, those marks (oil, gas, etc.) are tend to be washed out from the center to the tire marks that's usually are a bit lower than the center of the track. In normal condition you wish to be outer on the intake of the corner, come to the inner at apex and again in the outer on opening. When on rain you should avoid to close to the inner of the corner, as this is the most expected center of all debit to be gather around... and so on and on and on.... There are so many different issues to be considered determination the line position that it is really hard to get it in one peace of advice. One has to learn how to use the knowledge and experience wise enough to apply them correctly and adequately to the conditions met, and... constantly changing...

Yes, Kevin, I do my best to see and be seen. Keeping a safe braking distance between myself and the car ahead - yeah. Not letting myself creep up on a vehicle ahead of me with it's turn signal on because I assume that they will turn off quickly without slowing - yeah. But on Route 20 just east of home there is a street with a 45 mph limit. Do the locals stick with 45? Heck no. It is what it is. But keeping my bike close to the center line with people coming at my doing 50 or more (!!!) I am more likely to back off a lot from the car ahead of me and pull into the curb-side track of my lane. If the club is riding together our road captain or president may signal for "stagger" and that makes it even better.

I was taught to use the whole of my lane, do exactly what you described with regard to opening up corners, moving away from oncoming hazards, and searching for the best road surface, or at least avoiding areas of poor road surface. There is no right or wrong, it is a variable that you have to adjust to depending on all the data you are receiving at any given moment.

While actually in the curve I always aim to run in the outside tyre track, rather than on the line itself. On the approach I'm on the line, but I think it's best to have a bit of a safety margin in the bend itself, particularly if it's a truly blind bend.

Great video yet again! Yesterday, on my way to work, I was traveling in the right lane, close to the white line, approaching a merge and straight thru lane entering from the right. I slowed down for a vehicle to pull in front of me from the right, I had a truck to the left of me, the merging vehicle signaled, all was good. The car behind the vehicle that merged was going straight thru to the next exit just up the road, so I thought, as I looked straight in his window and he was not signaling - but he merged to his left anyway. I was aware of the truck to my left, so I pulled as close to the left of my lane as I could and braked. The car was close enough I could have smacked his driver window if I wasn't busy on the brakes. You said it, don't trust the other drivers. I should have known better. I'd like to add, be aware of the traffic around you, the truck I mentioned, to my left, limited my ability to change lanes. I noticed the truck braked hard. That would have been bad news if I tried to pull in behind him to avoid the merging car! It happens fast, so it is important to be comfortable with emergency braking and to be aware of your surroundings. Oh ya, and don't trust other drivers. Thanks for all your tips Kevin, God bless.

Over the years it's become a second nature to me. It's like having a possible threat meter inside my head and making adjustments to my riding on the go to keep it minimum. Or at least have an escape option, when some threat is unavoidable. It all comes with experience I guess, but not just leisure riding experience. One must be focused on the situation around and actively think of possible hazards before they even get a chance to occur. Then it develops into a habit and you can enjoy the ride while your subconscious takes care of the safety.

WAZE actually can be used like the concept of this APP as it can potentially provide you real time warning of hazards ahead. You still need to be aware and not rely on anyone but yourself and your skills but WAZE can alert you to potential hazards down the road. One way WAZE can help is it will alert you to objects on the road or large potholes on the road that others have provided info for and this can be used to watch for these and plan for a possible hazard in road. Several times it has made me aware of tire retreads on the road or objects on the e road that could create a serious hazard for a motorcycle and it puts you on extra alert to avoid these, so it’s a good tool to use, especially when traveling on the highway or areas where previous drivers/riders who have passed these items prior to your arrival.

That idea of warning system, IMO can work if we take the time to plan-ahead and get acquainted of all possible hazards and it's location (if that's possible at all). Using the app while riding would require a certain level of attention and can be really distracting - Whenever I hear a "ping", I tend to look into smartphone's screen and I will need a moment (or 2 ou 3) to decode given info. Dangerous. Anyway, I wonder how do you get so detailed info like "At corner X there is gravel on left side"... will it be crowdsourced, maybe? 🤔

Regarding your segment on blind curves: being positioned to the outer edge of the lane from center also hedges against the tendency of motorists to cross the centerline on a curve. Whether on a bike or in-car-cerated, I hate meeting oncoming traffic on blind curves. Thanks for messing with my mind with that app intro. I thought there’s no way an app can know the red car will turn left in 2.5 miles. Which is precisely the point of the rider being in charge of their own safety. Where have I heard that before, right?

I almost went to the App Store to check it out! As an aside I noted your wide angle mirror assists on your mirror. What is the make and where did you pick them up? Are the mounted totally on the mirror or did you modify the instillation? I own a 2018 Goldwing and definitely need to find a wide angle assist. Thanks Kevin

Nope not paranoid, just logical thinking. They're always out to get us on 2 wheels. Riding with this mentality will save your life, opposed to thinking that there all going to see you and respect your space.

I don’t think they are out to get us as much as riders are most vulnerable and have to take precautions accordingly. It’s what we signed up for when we took our MSF certification

Question about this app, is part of it dependent on google maps input? Rhetorical question but there is google data input on traffic/road conditions on android and will be rolled out on ios

Kevin, you had me going there for a few minutes 😁 how's an app going to know there's gravel in the road or a red car two miles ahead... Am I supposed to stare at my phone all the time? Good one...I noticed you favor the right track most of the time, I prefer the left as a general rule. Is it just preference?

I got so angry at the suggestion of using an app constantly while on the road, and was thinking "This is just stupid, just use your damned eyes and lane positioning and leave the phone in the pocket" then the app description got so ridiculous that I realized it had to be a joke. I came close to unsubscribing in the first 3 minutes though.

John the app is meant to be a joke, he's pulling our leg to listen up at the importants of proper lane position in order to see ahead as well as be seen. Kevin would never suggest doing anything with a phone while riding. The magic app is in our heads. Go to settings and select laser focused and then ride safely.

We use to be told that we should avoid the "grease strip" in the center of the lane. Is this still generally accepted or not? Just wondering. Trying to keep all this in mind. Thanks for the help.
