Living Big In A Tiny House

Living Big In A Tiny House

Күн бұрын

Phoebe and Luke have constructed a spectacular tiny house for themselves. It’s modern, beautifully built and enjoys a wonderfully spacious design. Totally off the grid and parked up on a friends farm, the home is surrounded by captivating rural views and is certainly an enviable place to live.
With the explosive cost of housing and affordability across the board at a remarkable low, it’s tough for young people to get ahead in life. Especially if you’ve been to University, most people start their adult life in debt and have to dig themselves out before they can even consider getting onto the housing ladder. This inspiring young couple on the other hand chose to do things a bit differently and constructed their own tiny house on wheels while they were finishing their degrees, giving them a debt free home to move into and a phenomenal start to their independent adult lives.
With very little prior building experience, constructing their own tiny house was a huge learning curve for the couple, but the result is impressive and has provided them with construction skills which are bound to be abundantly useful going forward in their lives.
This tiny house is paired with a massive solar system and is totally off the grid. An impressive array of solar panels and a great sized battery bank insure the house always has an abundance of power.
We hope you enjoy the tour of this tiny home!

What an epic view. I think big I would have a hard time getting to work every day. I would be waiting to sleep in long enough to wake up to those views, a cozy, laid back breakfast/brunch. Then off to adventures at the coast, which must be close by, since they eventually want a boat.

People dont realize how lucky they have it today (these people do). When I was a kid, unless you were into camping, these properties were not usable. Today with solar, battery storage, rain water harvesting, water filtration down to desalination, cell phones, starlink, Dish network, the list goes on and on of all the sources today that can help you make it happen. It dont even have to be a tiny house either. I know if I was 30 years younger I would find me a random island someplace and build a paradise.

Lovely the Black cladding and the Cedar is always a winner. I'd think that eventually the Tub will be raised to the level of the deck and the deck extended to capture it. And wow for the solar. They could have a shop and or a guest cabin and not worry about power. And for the money it's exceedingly nice.

Any examples of tiny homes using vermicomposting flush toilets ?
@ZeoCyberG
@ZeoCyberG Жыл бұрын
Yes, though, don't recall one on this channel. Examples are easier to find on off-grid homes, especially, as they tend to require more space to properly set up a system, though vermicomposting typically takes less space than other composting methods, but there have been a few done in tiny homes specifically. However, if you want a more detailed example than just showing one off you should look into blog posts. Like you can look up an article titled, "How to Compost in the City Using Red Worms: A Guide to Vermicomposting with Erika Backberg" that goes into a fair bit of detail...

Folks say they're "lucky", none of this is luck, it took a network to find the land for their home and def some wealth for the solar system, water catchments etc, even as a self build it took wealth to bring this home into reality, not luck, no arbitrary set of circumstances. Really hoping that more folks with lower incomes will be able to experience home ownership and somewhat stress free living. $120,000 is not luck.

I'm a bit confused about how they were able to afford the up-front cost of this build. They are students, but they had enough cash stashed to pay for high end materials and a huge solar system, presumably while also paying rent to live elsewhere? Maybe it was explained and I missed it.

My thoughts exactly. I know my hospitality job whilst studying full-time wouldn't have covered $120K, nor would I have any time left to build a house. Good on them for making it work, but even tiny home ownership without a mortgage seems a luxury only a few can afford!

Actually, a true minimalist can live out of just a backpack for all their things. So there's people that can very easily live with very little space for their stuff and would even find this space too big. It can just be hard for people who are nowhere near being a minimalist to understand that but the reality is you really only need very little and rest is just what you prefer or used to... It's okay if this wouldn't work for you but understand other people all have different comfort levels and preferences for how much stuff they need to own. There's people who would even be of the mind that 2000 Sq Ft is too small for even just one person and would call all tiny homes impossible to live in. Yet of course there's plenty of people who live in smaller homes, even whole nations where most homes are smaller homes, for the actual reality of how people can live. So there's actually whole parts of the world where people own very few things and modern consumerism that promotes owning lots of things has only been a trend for the last century but people in previous centuries owned very little unless they were either crazy rich or royalty. So understand that this is actually something people have been doing for most of human history and still represents most people in the world outside of some western nations. Not to say you have to live that way, but just pointing out that there are people and it's actually possible. Not to mention all the people who full time in their RV's/Caravans, for example. Many smaller than this tiny house!

I really like this channel, I feel you overdo it when stating these people and many others on your channel are escaping the housing bubble and debt. This may be true, but it seems most people on here live on plots of land owned by parents/family or people they know. This is a bit disingenuous. The high cost of regular homes today is based on land prices rather than the actual structure. I doubt these people are paying market values for the land they live on. Hence, the average person would not be able to afford to have a tiny home and pay market rates for land rental/purchase. I know there are some who find plots through word of mouth and advertising, but they seem to be few and far between on this channel.

Great home, wish them the best. Bryce, and the Living Big team: You've featured a lot of tiny homes on wheels, which is great, but for some variety, do you think you could show some tiny-to-small homes that have foundations and are not mobile? It would be nice to see some variety because the tiny homes on wheels have very similar dimensions (and layouts) since they're building to a trailer footprint.
