In today's episode we have come to visit the Jain family in Hauz Khas, Delhi to savour some home cooked Old Delhi Classics. They belong to the Jain community and have moved into Hauz Khas from the Old Delhi neighborhood. The lovely family welcomed us with a refreshing cup of ginger tea and some fascinating anecdotes about their family and cultural history. We then moved into the kitchen to witness the breakfast preparation.
Being a follower of Jainism, their cooking is sans onion and garlic. Chaavi and Sudha ji showed us the preparation of the iconic Old Delhi breakfast dish Nagori Halwa, then kache kele ka samosa and chole etc. Then we moved on to eating. After this awesome treat we again got back into the kitchen to prepare the lunch menu that included rice, Panchmel dal, gatte ki sabzi, kurkuri bhindi etc. What an enriching experience it was to learn about the nuances of Jain cuisine.
Finally after lunch our gracious host treated us to a tall glass of rabri faluda whose all components have been made at home. It was all gluttony but the light and wholesome food didn't make us feel guilty. Heartfelt thanks to our hosts for such warm hospitality and insights.
