SW1200 switchers were almost as common as salt in the 1960's, and were up graded to1500's Still a well maintained 1200 should do well even today. Switchers of this type rarely saw the stresses of their bigger brothers, GP's and so on, pulling huge trains at higher speeds. On the NYC tracks near my home in Cleveland, Ohio (1960's) a similar loco serviced a light industrial park, almost daily. When I returned home from military service in 1970. the old SW was still working away, with nearly 20 years of service, and the NYC was not known for maintaining equipment very well, at the time. It's nice to see a nice old engine like this working well and looking spiffy too.;-)

It has been a cool engine to watch all these years. MNA recently sidelined this unit and replaced it with a chop-nosed GP9, which is still cool in its own right. The #751 just recently left town on a BNSF train. I've been told it was sold to another owner, which is planning a major overhaul. So, thankfully, it's getting a new lease on life. I'll have to find out who bought it and where it's going.

In the UK there are many 50 year old locos still in regular service on the main-lines. They probably don't do the miles that US locos cover, but they still earn their keep. Classes: 08, 20, 31, 47 and 73 can all be heard rumbling away somewhere or other.

They do a lot more miles than this little switcher pottering up and down its six-mile branch line but, yeah, much less than a mainline freight locomotive.

First I'm a huge fan of short lines and urban industrial switching roads and I can say there are several of those older EMD switchers earning their keep as EMD intended. You can find these working grain elevators,steel mills and other type of industries for their owners.

"50-year old train engine"?? It looks more like a locomotive to me. Isn't the "engine" located in the long hood?
@MainTrack
@MainTrack 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, Janet. Thanks for watching. The term "locomotive" and "engine" can be used interchangeably. In fact, the dictionary's secondary definition for the word engine is "a railroad locomotive." The same goes for a fire "engine." It can refer to the mechanical components that make the vehicle move, or to the vehicle itself. Gotta love our English language!
@janetelizabeth
@janetelizabeth 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike. I guess the dictionary was probably last edited when a TRUE engine was really a locomotive - a steam engine - which was self propelled and was its own prime mover. Semantics . . . . I know that you knew, as you did say, "It's a vintage diesel locomotive" . . .
@beeble2003
@beeble2003 Жыл бұрын
@@janetelizabeth Sorry, but you're wrong. One of the meanings of the word "engine" is a railroad locomotive. "Engine" has been used to refer to machines in general since before railroads existed: Mike's example of fire engines is great, and there were also siege engines being used in mediaeval warfare. There is absolutely nothing wrong with referring to a railroad locomotive as an engine. Even professional engineers do it.

Shame they gave her a Ebell. It losses it classic sound and a couple of features on the engine are removed getting rid of the mechanical bell. Also Ebells are the worst sounding bells on engines to date.

Railroads like this one need to sell these old locomotives to a scrapper so they can be recycled and turned into something new and useful! These locomotives have lived their useful life and need to be eliminated. The railroad can use the money from the sale to buy a new and better locomotive!
