My way until now has been to wrap a big balloon around a speaker, like a drum skin, and then fix a small piece of mirror glass to it. Then I shine a laser on a camera mount at the glass which reflects to a blackboard on my wall. After the setup vibrations captured by the rubber will move the glass and relay a cymatics lightshow to the blackboard. It blows my mind that I can do this virtually now too. I had no idea how awesome Geo Nodes actually is.

THIS would work PERFECTLY with @Curtis Holt 's By-Gen addon! one of the option in the Generation Labs pack creates voxels based on patterns. With the Chladni Place you could render any pattern and use it with By-Gen really fast, and creating your own voxel formations. What do you think?

Hi Denis, you can definitely turn this into a mesh without any addons by using the following nodes: Points to volume, Volume to mesh, Set shade smooth, set material. Then add a smooth modifier (something like factor 2.5 repeated 4 times should work) and you've got yourself a mesh!

Hello, that's a wonderful tutorial! I was wondering if it's possible to change these forms. I mean, attract the particles to specific shapes, maybe from a black and white texture, a 3D shape, or even a weight map on the plane.Thanks again, this is so cool.

Awesome channel! Hopefully you'll read this, but as for what I'd like to see, here goes: I'd love in depth theoretical videos explaining geometry nodes, the math behind them (kinda like you did in this video) but where the nodes are explained-- what they do, how you can use them, etc. I've been working on a project I just can't get right and it's due to being new and not understanding the nodes or the math behind them. I know that's a lot to ask, but that's just my two cents. Anyway, great channel. Have a great one

So to get this to react realistically to music you would make this whole thing and then connect the epsilon to the output of an audio detector? To get a real cymatics effect you would need to change the underlying pattern according to the frequency right?

A bit late but since you asked for it, I will say it. I would like to have a tutorial on how to make a curve deform modifier in Geometry Nodes. Also I'd like to know how I can use the Fresnel generated by the Shader editor into Geonodes (the idea is to use this to select the outline of the object as seen from camera-I know there is a way with the camera.normal dot product but Fresnel is such a beautiful map). I'll use this tutorial to generate lace. Thanks a bundle and congrats.

@StrayCreations
@StrayCreations Жыл бұрын
Hi Jesse, I'm hard at work on implementing both of these features, the nodegroup already has some experimental features to introduce movement in the Z axis. The difficult part is that we can't import audio or a MIDI directly into blender and since Chladni patterns are based on frequency and not on amplitude, I'm not sure if it's possible at the moment. Of course you could hand animate the group to match the music.

How to get random index without repetitions? This is sth that get back to me from time to time, sometimes I can get around it with texture sth I don't. To get be more precise I want to scale text characters by random index one by one, random node gives me random index way that sometimes.. well most of the times it takes for example 2 or 3 characters at once and then one by one because those 2 or 3 characters have randomly get same index, and I don't want to search for lucky seed with longer phrases.

Well, thank you so much for posting it. I can use this video as a reference when I need it. Do you think Blender needs a rework of how to add mathematical equations (like DCTLs in DaVinci Resolve)? I mean, node-based workflows like any other type of workflows will get complex at some point, but something tells me adding expressions to the geometry nodes might need an update or two to prevent us from reaching that point too early in the development. Maybe I'm wrong.

This tutorial is extremely helpful! I was wondering if it would be possible to convert the form you have at 8:08 into an object that can be converted into an stl file? Im trying to extract the curves, before you used the geometry nodes to simulate smaller particles, to 3d print the cymatic forms. When I try realizing instances in the geometry nodes, as well as when I try to apply geometry nodes to a mesh, i'm encountering some errors where the nodes aren't able to be exported. Let me know if theres any way to do this :)
@StrayCreations
@StrayCreations Жыл бұрын
I'm glad it was helpful! Yes, you should be able to export any shape you make in geonodes by applying the geometry nodes modifier, this converts the objects from a geonodes group to an actual mesh. In the modifier menu there should be a little arrow which gives you the option to apply the modifier, or just F3 and search "apply modifiers". However, once exported the nodes are gone and you can't use the parameters anymore to change the shape, you're just left with a mesh object. (you might need to add a Realize Instances node at the very end if you are working with particles)

Great tutorial and blender file! Do you happen to know a way to figure out how frequencies translate to m & n? Say I want to visualize a C4 (261.63Hz), how would I figure out which values are needed in m & n? Thank you very much, hoping your channel grows :) !
@StrayCreations
@StrayCreations Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I did my best to find an answer to your question. In real life, all objects, including Chladni plates, have a set of natural frequencies at which they vibrate. A system, such as standing waves in a musical instrument or in this case, a plate, tends to vibrate at certain discrete frequencies called natural frequencies or eigenfrequencies. As far as I know, the patterns are a result of the ratio between the introduced frequency and the eigenfrequency of the plate. So plates of different materials would display different patterns on the same introduced frequency. Since we are in software, we haven't determined an eigenfrequency of the plate, we just work directly with this ratio, which is the ratio between n and m. In short, at least according to my understanding: the pattern of a C4 depends on what the plate is made out of, so it doesn't look the same across all chladni plates.

I'm going to assume everything else worked and you were able to scatter points as discussed in the later chapters. Could it be that you've not instanced objects on your points? Throughout the later part of the tutorial we're working with "points". A "point" is just a position in space and not actual geometry. In the video at 19:00 I use an Instance On Points node to instance a UV sphere on the points. This turns the "invisible" points into actual geometry that can be rendered. As for adding a material: You could A. put your set material after the UV sphere node and before the Instance On Points node or B. create your own object, give it a material, and use an Object Info node -> select your object and connect that to the instance input of the Instance On Points node instead of the UV sphere node. I hope this works! Let me know if it doesn't and I'll try to help out the best I can.

@StrayCreations Жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, thank you so much! I would leave character creation up to a program that's already really good at it. The human face is one of the hardest things to replicate and make it look good. However, if you have an existing mesh with a rig you can do some pretty interesting things with drivers. Motion capture in Blender is a super interesting topic. My latest video was made using Motion Capture with a VR setup. I will make a video about it next week. I've wanted a MIDI node forever but it doesn't exist in geometry nodes yet. This would be so cool to use.

@@DanielGGava I managed to "wrap" the particles around a sphere by adding the shape I needed during the set up of the very first node, just like I described it on my previous answer. I believe this works with Blender's basic 3D shapes (spheres, cubes, etc.), but I guess that if you need to wrap the particles around a different shape to Blender's predetermined, my guess would be that you'd have to set up a node that is able to create / import said shape. and then connect it to the rest of the nodes.
