You don't want to miss this one. I found this Painted Mid-Century 6 Drawer Lowboy Dresser at the thrift store for $35. The Dresser was made by Drexel Furniture Company, one of my favorite furniture manufacturers from the 1960s. Because of all the details on this dresser, removing the paint will prove to be difficult. In this video we will discuss the possible new furniture trends for 2022. You won't believe the transformation! Thank you for watching.

Amazing transformation. It always makes me sad to see quality old furniture that has been, more often than not, badly painted. I blame the shabby chic craze of the recent past. Let's hope more people will learn to appreciate the natural beauty of wood and furniture design, be it mid-century or earlier periods.

It’s always part of a pyramid scheme too. They buy the paint and the ‘right’ to sell the paint. But they have to prepay and buy in bulk. Worse it is always cheap paint and part of some magic system that doesn’t require sanding or prep work. It ALWAYS bubbles and flakes off eventually.
@arcatia66
@arcatia66 2 жыл бұрын
the ikea minimalism and farmhouse looks are also hitting antiques hard. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen gorgeous pieces just painted bright white and left that way or then “distressed” to look all worn, without care for the actual item at all
@andrewdriver3318

@@arcatia66 unfortunately I often have to tell people the antique phonograph, radio, or tv they want to sell was only worth money BEFORE they turned it into the kitschy fish tank, bar, “art” piece.

That looks so much better than before! And I like your thoughts. While painting is always an option, I like wood because of its inherent beauty. The asymmetry of painting is that it's a lot more work to undo than to do in the first place. I wonder if a layer of shellac under the paint could be encouraged, partly as a way to make it more readily removed.

This is one of my favorite comments. This is the approach I am trying to take. Saying it is ok for others to paint, but just not my first choice. Regarding laminate, I'll paint over that all day everyday : ) Barry

Drexel definitely has my heart when it comes to furniture. My dad inherited a beautiful desk and I grabbed myself an end table from a junk removal job for an older lady that was otherwise going to a landfill, both of which are thankfully free of paint and in great shape. They made some fantastic and sturdy furniture over the years, and finding pieces in good shape is definitely worth the money. Well done, amazing job! Just a bit of constructive criticism for future videos: If you have the ability with the camera you use, try to set the focus manually for some of your close up shots so that your hand movement doesn't cause it to lose focus. Otherwise You do a fantastic job and I'm glad I found your channel!

Well Said! I have been pleased with the quality of all the Drexel pieces I have found. Glad you feel the same. What I realized was, when working with gloved hands, I often bump certain settings on the camera and don't notice until it is too late. Doing my best to keep the quality top notch. Please keep giving constructive criticism in the future. To some, it may seem harsh, but I truly appreciate it. Barry

I would say, that back in the day, that little hidden drawer would have been where people would put jewelry or other small valuables when they left the house for a vacation. My mom used to do the same thing, stashing anything valuable in a sock and sticking it behind a dresser drawer.

I love how this turned out. So good! I watched a few of your other videos and bought the detail scrapers you used. Got to use them this last Saturday on a small drop leaf table I’m working on. OMG… I hated them. UNTIL… i finally got the groove. I am still working on the table but I found it more relaxing than I thought I would scraping off all the finish. Definitely enjoy that more than using a stripper or sanding. I used your link to purchase. I see a few other things I may have to purchase as well.

Words can't express the feelings I get when looking at an old piece of furniture. I'm extremely nostalgic and really enjoy seeing pieces like this treated with respect. It does my heart good. It's like it had a quick trip to the hospital followed by a long stay at the spa. Watching the wood being brought back to life and the hardware being restored is mesmerizing and satisfying. Barry... I love the quality of this piece and the way you finished it with the oil. I would love to know what is in that oil product. The secret compartment is a great feature! I was fortunate enough to buy a bedroom suite, some years ago, that had already been refinished with an oil finish. Inside the drawers it says Gibbard Furniture Shops Limited Established 1837 Napanee Canada. The logo is not a paper label, it is burned into the wood. The suite has a kind of Victorian look to it. The tops of all the pieces are solid wood, but I don't know what kind of wood it is. The legs have tiny wheels on the bottoms. All the hardware is exquisite and solid brass. I got the bed, a high dresser, a lower dresser with large mirror and a vanity dresser with large mirror, all matching pieces. I really treasure it. The Gibbard Company is no longer in existence, but I think it had a long run and always produced high quality pieces. The mirrors do show that they are old, but I have no idea how old my set is, as it was purchased at a "garage sale". The whole house full of furniture was for sale and I also got an incredible sofa with matching chairs that I had professionally re-upholstered in burgundy velvet.

Just a tip, not that I have seen you do this. Keep polishing wheels sorted according to what metals you are polishing. Mixing the wheels with different metals will cause gouging on the surfaces being polished. You appear to enjoy what you do and I enjoy watching you!

Its like peeling up the linoleum to find beautiful hardwood floors. Sure, the linoleum could look semi decent but the hardwood is always better. In my woods class in high school, I always either stained or oiled my work just because it's satisfying to see the natural grain of the wood and the joints

I've just recently subscribed to your channel, after being very faithful only to Angie♥️♥️from Transcend Furniture Gallery 😅 So far I loved all the pieces you worked on! I think so many things in life are subjected to fashion, and furniture is no exception when people feel like trying a new trend and paint or paintwash an old piece - why not? Its better than buying more and more crappy new stuff and thanks heaven there are great people like you ( and Angie😀) being skillful and talented to save many nice pieces in the end Also I admire the fact that you have a somehow 'holistic' approach - with the history and background and the stories these old pieces come with 🙏 greetings from lautertal/germany!

Could I suggest a big magnetic bit trey It keeps every bit and nut secure in place, and your mason jar won't accidentally fall over and break
