• Amazing Secret Monitor...
This video shows you how to create a secret LCD monitor. The first time I read that you could do this, I just had to try.
Before you attempt this, please note that I've only tried this with an LCD monitor. I don't know if it will work with any other type. Also, it may not work with certain LCD monitors. Also, the results may not be as good as the results I got. I recommend doing this project with a monitor that you don't care about losing.
The results are amazing. If you are going to try and make your own, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, I would recommed using a monitor that you don't care about. I bought mine from a pawn shop for $20 dollars. Once you remove the polarized layer, you've pretty much made the monitor useless as to normal use. If you are good with repairs and that sort of thing, I'm sure you could buy a replacement filter to fix the monitor. So basically, just make sure you are ok with modifying whatever monitor you've chosen to use for this project. Once you have your monitor you need to remove the top layer, which is the polarized layer. It helps to remove the plastic frame from the front but it's not 100% necessary. Once you remove the plastic front, use a hobby knife to cut on the edge around the whole monitor. Press hard enough to make the cut but don't press too hard. That's one thing to keep in mind during this whole process is that you can completely destroy the monitor by damaging the actual LCD part of the screen. Once you make the 4 cuts, then pick a corner to start peeling the polarized layer. I used a hobby knife to "dig" under the layer so I could get a big enough piece to grab onto. Now, every monitor is different so you may experience this part a little different than the next person. You want to peel slowly to try and get the biggest pieces possible and also not to put too much force on the screen. This part could take several minutes to get all of the polarized layer off. Most LCD monitors have an antiglare layer "attached" to the polarized layer and both of those layers are glued to the hard surface of the LCD. So you may see these extra layers as you are removing them. If you're lucky you will be able to remove all 3 layers by just pulling it off. But it's likely that some glue will be left over. It's also possible that you will lift the polarized and antiglare layer but leave most of the glue. If you look closely in my video, you can see a few spots where the contrast is different. These are spots where the glue came off. If there are a lot of glue spots and it bothers you, it is possible to remove the glue by using paint thinner. But you have to be very careful. If you use the paint thinner, apply it to the glue spots and use a piece of plastic to gently scrape it off. Don't press too hard or you will destroy the monitor. Overall, I would recommend to stay away from the paint thinner and just live with the glue spots.
Next you want to grab some glasses. I used a pair of the 3D glasses you get at the cinema. I never throw them in the recycle bin :). Anyway, you can open these glasses up and remove the "lenses".
I ordered 2 - 6" X 6" sheets of polarized filters from a popular online science store. I traced the shape of the area where the lenses on the polarized sheets. I cut them out and placed them inside the frames. Before you cut the shape, make sure to note the proper angle of the polarized sheet with the monitor. I had to turn my sheet 45 degrees to get the correct angle. So when I traced the lens shape on the sheet, I turned the sheet 45 degrees and cut them. (In the video the sheet wasnt turned 45 degrees, but that was just a video mistake)
So now you're ready for action. If you hook your monitor up to a computer and put on your glasses you should be able to see the screen just as normal. Anyone standing behind you will only be able to see a blank monitor. If you move far to the sides you can see a little bit of a negative image on the screen, but it's still very hard to make out.
Anyway, enjoy!

I've tried this, here's what you could expect. I used a Samsung monitor. The edges of the LCD are permanently black, cos they are covered by the frame. Slice these black edges. Use a sharp knife, and don't be afraid to cut deep. You should see some white light coming from your slit if you cut deep enough. use your knife to pry off the filter. I used my fingernails too. Mine came off in small bits, but once you've got a big enough hole, it should be easy to peel. Be careful! The edges of the torn filter are fucking sharp. It works as seen in the video. The screen isn't totally white though. There remains a faint image. It is very faint, so don't worry. If you look at the monitor from extreme angles, you will be able to see the faint image more clearly. venombite12 asked about the filter being blurry, and a whole bunch of idiots replied. This is because a matte layer is attached. You have to peel it off. Lastly, I noticed that the filter tends to tear in straight lines, and these lines are aligned with the polarization axis.

Zachary Johnny Hey I have a question about the matte layer. Did you eventually get the filter to be clear/transparant? If so, how did you peel off that matte layer, like you said you're supposed to? (I tried it myself and it stays blurry, don't know how to get rid of the matte. I was wondering if you know more about how to fix that). Ps thanks for sharing some more knowledge about how-to =)
@zacharyjohnny6546
@zacharyjohnny6546 9 жыл бұрын
Addy Al there was uneven tear between the polarised filter and the matte layer. i could see transparent patches which the matte layer did not cover. i then peeled from there. maybe you can try tearing your layer to get it uneven, but be careful, cos its sharp.
@addyal4865
@addyal4865 9 жыл бұрын
Zachary Johnny Yes, I see the transparant patches indeed, though it appears to be very difficult to tear them from the rest, I'll just try it. Anyway, thanks for the response =)

Removing the polarizer film from the front of the LCD screen is quite difficult. Being in the business I have had hundreds of junk screens to play with. And about half the time when I scraped the front polarizer off I broke the glass. You have to work at it very slowly. In the video, once an edge was up he was pulling it off. That's when the screen breaks. Don't do that. The glue is very strong and will pull the glass too much. Pull very gently and slowly. Take your time. Take lots of time. The results are pretty cool though.

Don't do this on a monitor you care about. Yes, it will work - but not exactly as shown so be forewarned. If you want to know how an LCD monitor works, have a watch of the link I provide. There are two polarizing filters carefully glued to the glass pane which contains the thin film transistors (TFT) plane. The filters are placed at 90 degrees to each other to stop light from passing through (the video explain why). As you can imagine when the manufacturer applies the film sheets it does so in a dust free clean environment and is glued down in perfect alignment (that's key here for this trick). You will find removing the top film extremely difficult, it will tear into shreds and leave behind adhesive. The adhesive will need to be removed - good luck. Chose your favorite solvent and hope for the best. I would start with the most gentle solvent you can find and go from there. A harsh solvent (Goof Off, Acetone, etc), may easily remove the adhesive but also etch in and blur the pane. Proceed completely at your own risk. In fact before trying a solvent (which usually makes a gooey mess - like smearing bubble gum on glass), try WD40 or some other deep penetrating oil. Yep, the super slippery sometimes works as well if not better than the brute force method of solvents. Now you have a crystal clean screen, you will now need polarizing film. It is unlikely you can use the leftover film you tore off since it is likely in small shredded pieces and those that did manage to get bigger strips are probably coated with the adhesive and now blurry to look through. Each buy polarizing film off the Internet, a good camera store (not many exist anymore), or you can use a pair of polarized sun glasses - that you may already own. Now here's the part you may not have noticed in the video - the glasses are always held at a near perfect 90 degree angle. If they are tilted even slightly the image on the screen will disappear. That's simply the way polarization works. You probably have noticed this when you wear polarized sunglasses, when looking at glare off a surface if you tilt your head the glare goes away - then comes back when you move your head back. Of when you look in the rear view mirror in your car and the back window has a strange rainbow effect across it - again causes by depolarization of the light rays. What this means to this monitor trick is in order for you to see the screen you will need to keep your head and glasses at perfect 90 horizontal alignment (assuming the filters are places properly in the eyeglass frames). Bottom line, this is a fun experiment - but don't expect it to be perfect. At best it's a fun trick, but the image you will see is going to have rainbow artifacts on screen and be only as good as the angle you can keep your head at. Sorry to be a party pooper. If this could be done perfectly don't you think they'd be sold this way? They wouldn't be able to keep them in stock if this were as good as this YT video suggests. Spoiler Alert: Not everything you see on KZbin is 100% true! :-) www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-gadget/engineer-explains-how-lcd-displays-work

Quick question:I did this to an older Dell 1708FPb monitor (res. 1280 x 1024) and the only thing is that when the polarizing filter isn't right up against the screen, it blurs. Do I just need to buy new polarizing filters, instead of reusing the one that I took off the screen?

If anybody is curious as to how this works This is an ok explanation. Thing is, all light has a polarization. this polarization can be at any angle. So think of light rays as a bunch of sticks oriented at a certain angle. If you have a gate with slits that go in the same direction as the sticks, then the sticks can pass through. This is what the polarization filter does to the light. Now, how lcd monitors work. You probably know that there are pixels and each pixel has 3 sub pixels coloured red green and blue. The combination of these colours produces the colours you see on the screen. The way they let in different levels of red green or blue is that they have an liquid crystal that can filter out different orientations of light polarization. that alone will not do anything to stop your eyes from seeing too much of one colour, since your eyes can see all polarizations of light. The second polarization layer (the one that he removes) is what prevents an orientation of light from coming through. There can't be any black in the picture if you can't completely filter out all of the colours. So you could say that when you look at the screen without the second polarization filter, you are seeing the picture, but there is a bunch of other light in the way. The second layer stops the wrong polarizations of light from coming through. I hope this was helpful if you were curious.

Correct, that's close enough. It's similar to how modern 3D glasses work. There is different polarisation within each lense, so when you look at the movie theatre screen your left & right eyes see separate images. Basically, it filters out the non-polarisation. In this setup, the screen he put on there blocks the image from coming through, until you're looking through the same polarisation & then the image is revealed. Google 'Polarisation' (or 'polarization' if you are in / from the US. :P )

Wouldn't polarized sunglasses also be able to see the contents of the screen? I ask to confirm that the polarizing lens in LCD monitors are not tied to the screen elements behind by something like polarizing angle, because I wear glasses already and would like to repurpose polarizing clip-ons I got with the glasses that I no longer use.
@philipkd
@philipkd Жыл бұрын
i just tried looking at my monitor with polarized sunglasses, and it's all black, meaning the light from the monitor is horizontally polarized. if you remove the monitor's filter, then the content you want is still horizontal, and polarized sunglasses will block that out unless you rotate your head 90 degrees.

This was really cool - and just as easy as in the video. I tried with ordinary 3D-glasses, but they were polarized the wrong way, so I had to tilt the screen 90 degrees. Even then the colors are extremely bleek and adjusting the screen settings doesn't help. Where can I find the right kind of polarizing filter?

technically. itd be extremely hard as you would have to edit and render it frame by frame. The filter in the glasses would be a specific color filter, blocking out every color but its own. SO basically you could have only one color in the video, just different shades. Makes interesting porn tho :D
