DescriptionThe amazing Shell Grotto is made of 4.6million shells. Discovered in 1835, no-one knows who, when or why it was built. A folly? A shrine? Just a hobby? Photos to be uploaded to www.thisotherworld.co.uk/UK11.html

Thanks for your fun video, I really enjoyed seeing the grotto, we too enjoyed Margate very much recently, it's unique and special. We've just done a gopro walk of the whole town for our youtube page too, hope you enjoy ours in exchange. Thank you we've subscribed.

I'm from England and we used to go frequently to Margate as child in the early 50's but the grotto hadn't been discovered. It's unknown who used it, who built it and what was it for. It's been speculated as being used by the Hellfire club a 19th century exclusive order and by the Templars. It has been carbon dated and the materials including some shells aren't from the Margate area in(Kent) The estimate on the shells was made thru renovation, brilliantly done, and the number of shells counted on the pieces. No 2 murals are alike. There seemed to be two access points one in the ground above discovered by two serious, responsible young boys who lived in the house above (19th C) during the laying of foundations for a pool. The entrance I went in was through a tiny shop on the hill which may or may not have been both enter/exit. There is a reasonable entrance fee used for it's upkeep. Sadly, Margate has become very run down over the years and ugly populated with cultures that place no value on it's history....graffiti, couches, washing machines, fridges and garbage dumped on the streets. Still if you ever visit the UK it's worth seeing then moving on to Hastings and Folkstone not too many miles away.
