For real. I know it was a huge deal with Top Gun: Maverick not being up for Best Cinematography at the Oscars that year, but this movie would probably still have won. Even when I saw the trailer, this was one of the best looking movies I had seen all year.

This movie won the Oscar for Best Cinematography and I think it was very deserved.

Although even though Bardo by Alejandro Gonzales Iñarritu has by far the one with the best cinematography in his filmography along with The Revenant and my favorite in collaboration with Darius Khondji, I have to admit that AQOTWF has great cinematography, with good shots, incredible war sequences, and that it is all cold and at the same time heartbreaking in terms of deaths, there is no doubt that it deserves the Oscar.

@@stewyyishim Hey, I know Batman has the best photography, but compared to BARD made by Darius Khondji (my favorite), NOPE made by Hoyte Van Hoytema, BABYLON made by Linus Sandgren, EMPIRE OF LIGHT made by Roger Deakins, TOP GUN MAVERICK made by Claudio Miranda and the same AQOTWF made by James Friend narrowly surpass him. And don't worry, Greig Fraser can win another Oscar in Dune 2

Honestly, if you think Saving Private Ryan, 1917 or Dunkirk are good war movies - I recommend you watch Schindler's List and especially Pianist.

Have not seen the movie but I really appreciate how still and observational the camera is in so many of these shots. Too many war films try to get all "messy" and "visceral" with their camera movement, but this is beautifully restrained.

If the 1930 version and the made-for-TV version are very good, the German and Netflix-made version is not only a great adaptation by Erich Maria Remarque, but a great war movie, surprising and terrifying at the same time. Deaths, shots, explosions, cold, fire, mud, and a lot, and a lot of brutal violence and well deserved for best international feature film, photography, and production design, but as for the best soundtrack, they have many debates on that, but hey. If these Germans have some quality together with Netflix...
