I highly recommend this demo. I've done it for a few years and really makes my freshman and even upperclass students really ask lots of questions. I use it as an introduction to the behavior of waves (refraction, refleciton, etc) Pretty easy to set up, a bit of a hassle to clean up when I'm all done (I carefully clean and store the broken glass for later use) but it's a great discrepant event. My glass is picked from actually broken lab glass selected to be label free. I have a whole round bottom flask and 3-4 test tubes in it, and pick them out with tongs.

Lol, too easy, you can't see that there is an unbroken glass in it. It flattened the pieces of broken glass so that we cant see them anymore. Why do you believe that the basin is so large ? And that the liquid used is oil instead of being water ? Because we'll see broken glass ends with water

Didja know that diamonds dissolve in heavy mineral oil? Put your diamond in some oil, and it vanishes! Clean the diamond, it comes back! Magic! Either that or the index of refraction of oil and diamond are so close that the diamond doesn't refract light any differently than the oil. This trick is used by gem smugglers to this day.

Refraction does not cause the break look of the pencil. Magnification of the liquid properties and container cause the size diffetence. You have swallowed a decades old lie about light refraction.Light has nothing to do with it, it magnification.
