There's a certain irony to this video being posted alongside a Petebay video 🙂 I say keep them both going if it makes you happy. There's no harm in pursuing your hobby. Add to that you provide us with entertainment and education. And it can be argued that you provide a valuable service as middleman in the acquisition-distribution cycle. New car?

I love your videos where you don't go to any more tool autions and don't spend $400. And I look forward to watching many more videos where you don't go to any more tool autions although it's quite distressing to hear that Mrs Pete went crazy and spent $12 at the same auction that you didn't go to. You could at least tell us what tools she bought...she did buy tools...right? (Also, have you considered making a display of Starret micrometers/measuring tools in a glass display frame? They would look great above any fire place - you could have a notice underneath saying 'in case of emergency break glass 😄)

The dressing stone that you said might be for diamond wheels is a carborundum stone for dressing regular vitrified grinding wheels and mounted shank wheels. Don't throw it away. You can some what true grinding wheels with it. It will work well to true up your pedestal grinding wheels if you don't have a rotary crush dressing tool.

The cylindrical parts you were wondering about, mixed in with the scribes and punches are from a kit that attaches to calipers so you can measure inside diameters that are larger than the caliper capacity. If they have points, they are good for measuring brake drums. They can be flipped around on the caliper to measure brake rotors too.

Those knurled threaded rods look like handle that screw into the thimble of a an inside micrometer. Also, were the reamers and taps bought by the original owner as seconds and marked with the incorrect sizes or had the manufacturers name removed so as not to associate tools that didn't pass QC with that manufacturer. Other reasons possible reaasons for grinding taps...In some instances when the machine shop was less well stocked, we didn't have that many chuck wrenches and not all our taps had centres in the end for a centre point, we would occasionally grind flats into the shank of a tap that didn't have a centre on the end. We would then lighty hold the tap in a chuck on a pillar drill to keep it aligned and turned the tap using the flat a tap wrench.

If you have a Starrett tool and know the Starrett tool number, the company can usually supply the missing part. I've found that the older "General" brand stuff is usually adequate for average shop work. I have General tools purchased in the 1960s that are still in use. Be cautious when servicing micrometers that are stuck, stiff, or need adjustment. There are often tricks that you need to know to service micrometers from different manufacturers. Brown & Sharpe and Lufkin are the micrometers you are most likely to see that have different internal construction from Starrett and Asian imports. There are videos and publications that will keep you on the right track. Cheers from NC/USA

The magnet you skimmed over is a good tool. It is a magnetizer/demagnetizer for a screwdriver. They work well. I have owned one since the 90's when I sold SnapOn tools. Magnetizing a screwdriver has been a real benefit through the years when working on cars. Starting a screw or retrieving one that you dropped that settled in a precarious place that your arm, hand and fingers cannot maneuver into. Plus, demagnetizing it is also a good thing. It may not be perfect but they were inexpensive and did what the package states.

Last Saturday I missed an auction due to bad weather. There was a tub of taps of all sizes and a few dies. A vintage Craftsman toolbox full of sockets ratchets, wrenches and extensions. Also a milling machine index with tailstock not sure of the make with a good 4 jaw chuck. This is an annual sale with lots of bidding competition so I probably wouldn't have bought anything but would have been fun anyway. AL B.

Lyle - Sure looked like a good auction I would have seen you at. Seems the auctioneer did a fine job with the presentation as well - some of them just jumble things. Although it seems to be those auctioneers I would never hire is where I get the best deals - LOL. Depends on if you are a buyer or seller. Keep moving and keep enjoying those - I see another PeteBay is up so you have room for more. Like you I appreciate verniers - the height gauge I use on my surface plate is a very old B&S vernier model, nothing at all wrong with it. We haven't had a good tool auction around here in a while. Enjoy.

First, you did well at $400 for that lot. There's 400 in mikes alone, then the Albrecht drill chuck. Now you asked why keep broken taps or dull reamers. Simple, it's tool steel. I've made internal grooving tools with a short length of shank from a reamer or tap and a section of steel rod. Cross drill the rod the diameter of the tool steel and add a set screw from the end and you have a grooving tool for snap ring grooves or O ring grooves for next to nothing. Waste not, want not.

That was a good amount at that auction. That Champion looks like when I worked there. They were good compressors and why I have two. I have the same Mitutoyo set except my ruler is a 24" and my protracter is missing the same nut. I guess either they loosened themselves over time or people liked to fiddle with them. Most of the auctioneers allow you to and actually want you to sign up for their email list so you know when there is a new auction. Was that a Mantis tiller there as well? I wanted one for the little gardening I do at they were very expensive even for wore out ones. I bought one that I don't think was ever used for $55 in November when no one wanted them.

You know, being pitted a little doesn't hurt a lot of that stuff if it's just below the surface. The pictures and videos were fine, the early morning shadows gave it some character. Have you ever been forced to cut a steel ruler blade in half because you had to have it. It's tough to do. That was a pretty good haul. I went thru my tri-square parts the other day and polished up an old one to use around the house. Didn't want to leave my good stuff out. I need to pick up some paste wax to coat stuff with. A person needs a container with a basket and some oil (maybe with some silicone even like they use on guns that keep the fingerprints off) so you can just dip and drain items before putting them up. Some of that really smells though. Keep going to the auctions, everyone loves it when you do and you know what to look for.
