Bet your grass isn't this tall! Are we trying to be overachievers at Harvest Hills Ranch?
Truth is, I decided to try this new mix of Sorghum Sudan grass, okra, brown top millet, Sunn Hmep and more. All I can say is wow! The amount of growth this cover crop produced in a short period of time was like nothing else I have seen. We even have fun with sharing it with the cows and watching them enjoy it.

Looks like a good way to start young trees in areas with high deer graze. They would never get to the trees and it all would die in winter to never smother out the trees.

Great video thank you! Please I'd ask, is it possible then a roller crimple ahead combined to seed directly rear with a no-till seeder or a fertlizer spreader? Thanks
@completecarewellness
@completecarewellness 2 жыл бұрын
You could roller crimp to give a nice mulch and then drill into it. This could be done in a single pass. Broadcasting seeds after the crimper will have limited benefit due to the difficulty in getting seed to soil contact.

I'm wondering about the seed heads on the cover crop and whether you waited longer than you wanted to chop and drop the CC? I am no farmer, but we just bought 8 acres and are looking into a cover crop for the lower part of the property (7.5 acres) which someone else has been rotating corn, soybeans and something else on. It's bare soil right now (February 4).

The intention here was ground cover more than forage. I was not concerned about the seeds heading out. If this would have been strictly for the purpose of forage I would have harvested prior to the plant going to seed.

@@completecarewellness Thank you. We've recently acquired a parcel way bigger than we've ever been responsible for and were scrambling to understand what we should do with a broad level portion we're told has had man rotating corn, cotton and "beans" (soy) for quite some time. This field is currently bare dirt.

@@davmatheophilus159 A Diverse cover crop mix with close to 10 species suited for the season and your area is a good start. You could add more plants if desired. Typically a blend of grasses, forbes and legumes makes the most sense for overall land regeneration. Ask yourself what you intend to do with the land? In your situation, I would not hesitate to till the land and plant, then maybe drag the area to make sure you get good seed to soil contact. Good luck.

Hi! My husband and bought a place with disused and weedy fields. We don’t yet have farming equipment. How would you suggest getting these type of seeds into the ground? We have a push mower and weed eater, shovels and one garden weasel hand tiller.

What is the mixture percentage of each seed? Great video

Sunn Hemp 5%, okra 1%, Sorghum Sudan 9% and the rest was mostly millet.

How many months is your sunn hemp? And the sedan grass? To get to that height? Did you apply any fertilizer to get the great biomass?
@completecarewellness
@completecarewellness Жыл бұрын
No fertilizer was applied, unless you want to count chickens being on this area ahead of time. This is about 2-2.5 months of growth to get this height. All of the seeds were planted at the same time.

I cut the mix for stored forage and let the pasture grasses grow up behind it in the spring.

@@completecarewellness i misunderstood then. means the area is for pasture, not for some cash crop you wanted helped with the cover crop of okra, hemp, and sorghum sudan...😇

@@paulbraga4460 I had planted potatoes and other crops prior in this area, but it is now back to pasture. I still think the residue from this mix helped get some cover on the ground to help with reestablishing pasture grasses.

Certainly an option to try to incorporate organic matter into the ground faster. I have used this technique from time to time. In our system, I prefer to allow the animals to use it when possible so I can capture the manure to help with land improvement.

@@completecarewellness Did you let cattle graze the plot and how did they react?
@completecarewellness
@completecarewellness 2 жыл бұрын
@@sdp2308 They did not graze this particular plot. We did cut it and bale it, but I let it get too fibrous. We had other plots of the exact same mix that I used to cover some areas in one of our pastures. They devoured it. It is in one of our other videos. We called it "cow candy" they enjoyed it so much.

@@sdp2308 Good idea and something I have considered. I need to manage the cover crop for that purpose to get an accurate comparison. It should have higher nutritional value than the bahia grass hay.
