The professor NEVER once gave a lesson explaining the fundamentals of pronouncing stressed and unstressed vowels in detail like you did. Hello Olga , one more Russian rules that confuses me is the rules of conjugation . I simply don't understand how to apply . For example let us take the word for run i.e. бегать 1st Person Singular is бе́гаю but for its perfective i.e. побежать 1st Person Singular is побегу́ , it is not “побежаю” . Same goes for 3rd person plural . Is there any set of rules so that by just looking at an unknown word , I can figure out its 1st Person Singular to its 3rd person plural ? If you have made any video in youtube in this regard , please share with me the link ? I shall be very grateful to you.

"Астрономия" shows that the first rule can be simplified to "Prior to the stressed syllable." Because the long 'uh' is not necessarily the first vowel of the word, just immediately prior to the stressed syllable which sometimes happens to be the first vowel of the word.

Amazing content! I was taught Russian at University and they never bothered to explain these rules. I have a question though: at 15:24 the example word компьютер the final 'e' is pronounced with a 'scwha' sound. This wasn't explained to be possible with the letter e. Does this happen to 'e' after the stressed syllable but not the last letter of the word? (I hope this question makes sense!) Thank you for the great videos. Keep it up!

Valerio Kim , some foreign words are pronounced like that: компьютер, интернет, принтер, сканер.
@music_appreciation3 жыл бұрын
@@AmazingRussian This is VERY hard for me to remember: foreign words and names where Е sounds like Э, because there's no way to tell which words are which! According to Wiktionary, for example, тест (test) is pronounced тэст, but текст (text) is pronounced with a Е. Do native speakers regularly make mistakes in such words? If not, how clearly will they understand foreigners who mess up because they can't keep track of all these exceptions?
@AmazingRussian3 жыл бұрын
@@music_appreciation , interesting question! Most likely, native speakers will understand you. If not, they ask for clarification. Foreign words have a tendency to sound in Russian as close as they sound in English, for example. The word ТЕКСТ is not really a foreign word, even though it is derived from Latin. On the other hand, ТЕСТ is truly foreign. It has equivalents in Russian: ЭКЗАМЕН or АНАЛИЗ.

Recently I came across the word счастливый, which puzzled me significantly. I was told the change from /a/ to /ɪ/ has to do with reduction, but I didn't see it explained in this video. Do you have a video in which you explain vowel reduction in-depth?
@AmazingRussian6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for a good question. This video is for beginners, and it explains basics of pronunciation. Yes, there are a few minor rules that can be considered more like the exceptions. Here is one of them: after the consonants Ч and Щ the letter А is pronounced as something between Е and И. There are very few words that fall this rule: счастливый, часок, щавель, Чайковский, частота. I might make a video for more advanced students explaining more rules of pronunciation. Thanks for an idea.

Any explanation why the word "слова" (with the second syllable being stressed, plural of "слово" - with the first syllable being stressed), differs in pronunciation from the very that word (in plural), namely: "слова", when it precedes the number: "два", "три", "четыре", in which case it is being pronounced same as "слово" ??

Olga, I'm checking out again this video of yours related to reduction of vowels in Russian. Just checked out a video of another russian speaking person that says that O and A are also pronounced as "u" in "but" when the vocal is placed at the end of the word (not only at the beginning or when it's in the 1st pretonic syllabe but also when it's the last letter of the word, such as in мало, лето), but you say here that you pronounce it so only when it's at the beginning (or when it's in the 1st pretonic sillabe). Your thoughts? Is it more common the way you say???
