Amazon has grown into one of the largest companies in the world. This video takes a look at how big they actually are while highlighting some of their lesser known or more significant acquisitions over the years.
*Before you comment, their web services are a huge part of Amazon. Probably should have been mentioned in the video but I chose to exclude it in favor of sticking with the theme of acquisitions of separately branded companies.

You missed the biggest point of Amazon's story. They are a logistics company. They build their own 53' shipping containers in China, they are the world's 5 largest ocean shipping company. They have 260,000 drivers, 85 cargo jets, and dozens of ships. Seeing Amazon as a website that sells products really misses what the company really is.

Amazon is e ecosphere company. there aim in a way is that you as a costumer does not have to think about where you will find it want. They will have it and if possible even before you knew you wanted it. At a point if they would be allowed to I can see them try to develop complete housing estates where everything with in is owned and maintained by Amazon. (a bit like a all in hotel) the shops on the estate would be Amazon run. they would create a complete closed loop. You might only need to go out of the Amazon estate for your own work somewhere else.

In my opinion, Apple does a better job with their acquisitions because they feed off of each other and incentivize new products with preexisting ones due to their connectivity. Amazon obviously has a similar strength but their market is more convoluted (but you can find pretty much anything on Amazon).

It's difficult to watch a video about Amazon without mentioning AWS. It's the primary source of Amazon's income and generates much more profits than any of their retail businesses. Additionally, *many* other tech giants (Netflix & Twitter just to name a few) rely on AWS's cloud services. Another lesser known Amazon acquisition is Zoox, a self-driving autonomous vehicle company that is in direct competition with Tesla. A great supplementary video to this would be Hasan Minaj's Patriot Act episode on Amazon. It touches on the more niche tech operations of Amazon.

I resisted Amazon for a long time because I wasn't keen on how they drive their staff. But at the end of last year I broke my resistance and to be honest I haven't regretted it yet. Prime is better than Netflix in my opinion and the online shopping experience is second to none. And for me at least, their delivery service is second to none too.

Like many people in this comment section, I've ordered a massive amount of things off of Amazon in the past few years, and even though I'm a prime member and enjoy very fast shipping I do feel kinda glad for their workers that they've slowed down their shipping in the past year or so from free same day and 1 day to 2 or 3 days. Even though it's a nice thing to get packages at unprecedented levels of timeliness and consistency, there's a somewhat point of diminishing returns emotionally, and 2 or 3 days is still excellent and I'm not bothered by it.

Amazon is building a 'fulfillment center' just outside my town. The spot *was* a 50-acre cow pasture of rolling hills and oak trees with a lovely pond in the middle. Thankfully, they pushed all the oak trees into multiple piles and burned them, leveled the rolling hills, and filled in the pond. The steel girders reach 5 or 6 stories into the sky. I'm a former manager for Amazon Logisitcs (AMZL). AMZL is a loss for Amazon at least in the "last mile" of transportation. AWS is the true backbone of Amazon. I spent a LARGE amount of time in AMZLs internal wiki website looking for info related to my work and I frequently found info on the AWS side of things. AWS hosts an INCREDIBLE amount of customer's data/etc on AWS, including the US Gov't and military. The programs/systems being developed are incredible and there are a LOTTTT of them. They are primarily focused on increasing their tech side of things and automating all of their processes to reduce costs.
