Amazon has recently launched into the healthcare sphere with Amazon Clinic. Through Amazon Clinic, you can renew things like blood pressure and thyroid medication, can be prescribed birth control, and can have a variety of routine ailments assessed and treated via telehealth. You can even use Amazon's Pharmacy to fulfill the medications you may be prescribed at these appointments. As a primary care nurse practitioner I have thoughts on this. Some good. Some not so good. As private telehealth companies continue to pop up into the heathcare landscape, there is certainly implications on primary care, but increasing accessibility is huge. lets's talk about it
You see the flight attendants grab the first aid kit, and know the call is coming. If you are like me, you are crossing every digit you have, hoping someone else will be on board. Then the call comes overhead on the plane. "Would a healthcare provider please come to the front of the plane". Today we discuss with the FANI Pack panel, what happens when YOU are the healthcare provider on the plane. Or need to provide care in some other sort of non healthcare based setting. After experiencing being the person responding to a healthcare emergency on a plane, I was shocked to learn how little is required to be on board an airplane when it came to emergency medication and equipment. And the items that were there, were difficult to use, and were not the appropriate medications and equipment for an in flight emergency. Some medications that would be lifesaving, and are common occurrences on airplanes, are not required.

It would be great if this would actually reduce the power trip that so many primary care providers are on. They just love lording over the patients their ability to withhold meds and either deny or demand referrals to specialists.

I’m going to try this to get clobetasol for the psoriasis on my head. A week of clobetasol heals it so I don’t have to work as hard for two months to control it. I can’t get it from the GP at my VA clinic because there’s a restriction on them for prescribing it. They want me to drive two and half hours to SF to see the derm. The derm there wanted me to stop treating it at all so they can see what it looks like untreated and come back. I’m not going to my wife’s doctor on her insurance anymore for the same reason. Multiple appointments with an asshole that doesn’t want to listen to me. Wants to doubt me about it being psoriasis because I don’t come in crusty covered in plaques. I’m not going to stop wet wrapping and moisturizing with the OTC stuff and be itchy for these assholes. Its fucking psoriasis. My dad has had it his whole life in exactly the same places I have it. I know how to manage it. I’m 47 years old. I just want some mother fucking clobetasol to use for a week at a time on my head. That stuff is like magic for healing my scalp for decent chunks of time. I don’t want a damn relationship with some asswipe derm trying to play doctor on me. I don’t want to come back for multiple appointments about it. This Amazon option sounds awesome to me!!!

i think in-person clinic appts are terrible. I have a hearing impairment and TBI which reduces my processing speed.. and the doctors already only give me 5 minutes. and most of the time is used with saying hello and niceties and buys.. so there is only about 2 minutes to do an exam and ask impromptu questions verbally.. I get nothing discussed that is important to me in that format. And I don't have a way to get the information written down fo me of what the doctor is saying. So i leave with no real information and have not been able to communicate my conditions satisfactorily. with a messaging system, i can have a dialogue with a doctor. And i can take the time i need to write the questions i want to ask. and when the doctor offers replies by messages.. I can take time to review their answers. I also don't have to waste time driving to and from a clinic ( i don't have a car) and the parking etc. I am hoping for more expanding messaging appts.. and if there need to be exams.. i am hoping there will be robot-doctors to handle the procedures in my home. And i think this is coming.

It would definitely be a "here and there" type of thing I think vs becoming a long term patient. Good question about the type of compensation

If your major objection is that this is removing your control and giving it back to consumers than I think this is probably a good thing. I don't see your license as being at risk for them not following up with you.
@NurseLiz

My major concern with this comment is that patients are seen as consumers. Capitolisms hold on healthcare is destroying it.
@gregogrady8027
@gregogrady8027 Жыл бұрын
@@NurseLiz Alternatively, your presentation of the patient views them as slaves. We must move past the oppressive authoritarian model of healthcare as gatekeepers. As someone who identifies as a consumer of healthcare, I could not be happier that capitalism is bringing me the freedom to obtain healthcare via alternatives at a cheaper price. My greatest fear is not from those attempting to provide me with a product I wish to obtain at a mutually agreeable price but rather those who wish to insert themselves within that arrangement by force while proclaiming it for my own good. That is exactly the model we currently have and it is hardly capitalism.

@NurseLiz Clinics and Hospitals on the administrative side also see and treat patients and their health insurance as consumers. Otherwise how else can you explain the influence that big pharmacy has had over getting doctors to recommend and prescribe medications patients may or may not need on a trial-and-error basis? Happens regularly. Also how else can you explain the dramatic increase in thr numbers of C-sections performed in Hospitals when it's not medically necessary for most patients rather either medically induced and done as a result which was unnecessary to begin with?
