I recently bought the Cooler Master h412r version of that cooler at a brick and mortar store, to put in a 4U case that lifted the mainboard to much to be able to fit a 120mm tower in (did a rare buy at a B&M because I had to be able to actually measure the thing to see if it would fit XD). One HUGE difference I notice between this version and the OG Cooler Master one is that the Cooler Master one is flat as can be with a near mirror finish. There's no gaps between the aluminium surface and copper pipes, it's ground down to a nice solid surface with a great finish. And it didn't cost all that much either, 24€/26$ at a B&M, so Amazon isn't making it cheaper with the debranding/shittier finish/worse surfaces, just higher margin.
@enlightendbel
@enlightendbel Жыл бұрын
You said in the video that people shouldn't buy the Cooler Master version either as it would also have the same mounting pressure map, but considering the h412r has a far cleaner surface, I'm actually not certain that is a correct advice. I'm willing to bet the h410r version also has a far flatter and cleaner surface than the Amazon one. It looks like the Amazon version attempted to save extra production cost by not doing the extra surfacing step.

Also computer cases are no longer made of crappy steel so they no longer rust in a high-humidity environment or weight a metric ton. You got that right about RGB tho. To be honest Amazon using cooler master to make the cooler as an official contractor is actually an massive improvement to how Amazon was previously doing Amazon basics products. Cause before they were literally just ripping off other products on a 1 to 1 basis that was already being sold on amazon then de-ranking the competition, SO credit where credit it is due as they are playing ball with 3rd parties and we actually need this to continue for reasons I hope people get.
@GamersNexus

One major point is that Cooler Master is also the factory (supplier) and the brand on the coolers, so Amazon is still going straight to the supplier. But still, good point -- hopefully it wasn't just a one-off and they continue to do that if they're going to make 'store brand' items.

You believe what you want to believe. What I believe in is thermal conductivity. Aluminum > thermal paste > air. There is definitely such a thing as too heavy thermal compound application despite whatever anyone's told you. Slathering paste on a heatsink is like wearing a coat in the summer. That extra layer will not make you cooler. Every layer adds thermal insulation and resistance.

Keep in mind that part about competing on price when they're included in the box. At that price point on top of the cpu cost they were competing with actual paperweights. For what they are they're pretty good, by no means high performance but they aren't useless. Notably right behind the tower coolers in the real world performance test on a 68w cpu so if you can get one as a hand-me-down for the same price of "free" for a budget build it wouldn't be a particularly meaningful upgrade.
@Shryquill
@Shryquill Жыл бұрын
Hang on a second, the results show the Wraith runs a little hotter and louder than aftermarket budget coolers with a 68 watt load, we didn't see any results to suggest that translates to an appreciable improvment in gaming performance. Perhaps if noise was really an issue for you then it might be an upgrade, but otherwise you'd be blowing money on a second cooler for marginal improvements.
@ffwast
@ffwast Жыл бұрын
@@Shryquill If I remember correctly that "wraith prism" model with heat pipes isn't included with the lower wattage processors it would be perfect for and those are sold with a "wraith spire" or "wraith stealth" so it's more a situation of these being spares from higher end builds that enthusiasts don't really need. Personally I gave my older model wraith spire with a vapor chamber to a friend whose Ryzen 3600 came with a thin solid aluminum wraith stealth because I got a big Noctua tower cooler and didn't need the stock cooler anymore.
@Shryquill
@Shryquill Жыл бұрын
@@ffwast It looks like that was the case, but nowadays AMD seems to only bundle the Prism with their 8 and 12 core efficiency-oriented CPUs, Ryzen's 7700 and 7900, both of which are 65W TDP with a real-world load ~88W, so the Prism actually works really well with them. Hopefully they keep up with this pairing because it makes far more sense than what they used to do.

Not only is the top of the fin stack different, but the heat pipe spacing through the fins is different, and the X appears to have around 45 fins while the Spirit has just over 50. The X is also 46mm wide while the Spirit is 48mm wide according to the Thermalright website. Performance will likely be similar, of course, but I know you like to be very technically correct.

Amazon Basics is like that amoeba game where an amoeba slowly eats all the slightly smaller ones until it gets so big that it’s the only large organism alive. Just a constant game of crushing each competitor to incorporate it into its own body.

Thermalright is absolutely killing it right now for budget coolers! We've been reviewing their stuff lately and they deserve all the credit they're getting for the value.

@@GamersNexus I did have the fan on mine crap out, the spindle came unglued from the plastic blade bit. even for the price I paid for it, I would still say it's a deal, even accounting for the replacement fan (I replaced it with a noctua)

Would quickly sanding/lapping the contact area help? Coz if 20 minutes and a sheet of wet and dry sandpaper fixed the performance, I'd be willing. Back in ye olde days, we used to get our coolers flat by using valve grinding compound on a sheet of glass. Lapped a Taisol to a mirror finish once. I few years later, I slipped while tweaking the system when powered on. The fan partially ripped off my fingernail and I left a trail of blood between the PC and the sink of the LAN party host. I don't think it appreciated my work.

I recognised that fan mounting thing instantly. I have this cooler master in my case right now. the RR-H411-20PW-R1. It's been good enough for my 3600 and is very quiet. It's a sub 30dba at 100% 90mm cooler. what were you expecting?

Fewer fins spaced further apart provide less resistance to airflow for fans that run slower and don't generate a lot of pressure.

I have the Cooler Master version of this cooler (bought from Amazon) and as long as you don't put too much heat through it it's fine. Cheap and fine, I paid less than $13 for mine on clearance and it's cooling (hold on to your socks) an AMD A10 6600K that has a surprisingly good on board GPU for games like Roblox and Minecraft, all the rage for am eight year old. Definitely a good cooler considering the price.

Wait... did you say (around 3:43) that Amazon debranded the cooler, or DBRAND-ed it? *cough* For the cooler depth measurements, I still don't understand how to read them. All I understand is that the thinner the block part, the better, but how do I know which is better between, say, the Scythe FUMA 2 and the Noctua NH-U14S, which seem to have bars of about the same thickness? In the installation segment, that looks like the same kind of open air test bench that JayzTwoCents recently picked up. What do you think of it?
