I’ve just had a new kitchen fitted. I collected all the ‘good boxes’ I’d been storing, cereal boxes, Amazon boxes etc etc and made ‘dummies’ - this let me play around for a few weeks before investing in organising solutions. I bought far fewer drawer dividers than I thought I needed, re-used and repurposed some sentimental cookie tins, which feels more personalised rather than Pinterest perfect. I’m looking for a cord management box now!

I would relabel the spices in your spice cabinet. The label is in the middle of the front of the jar, so you can only read what the front row of jars says on them. I would put slimmer labels further up so you can see what’s in each “stack” of labels.

So my dad is the oldest of 5 and when him and his siblings were younger my Mammy used to keep all their socks in the kitchen drawer by the door because she said they would never have them for school. Heck this was back in the 60s when she thought of that idea.

8:30 I hated having my spices on a tiered thing. Trying to reach them, not knock over others, and not be able to see the labels was such a pain. I finally found some shelves that let the spice jars lay down at an angle so I can see the label on the lid and easily pull them out and I love it. It took some hunting since my shelves are shorter than average, but I found a rack that works.

When my son was 3 (he’s 31 now) 😂 and instead of any labels on his bins, I designated the toys in clear or translucent or bright colored bins where I’d make a bin for “tiny construction men” “trucks” “signs/tracks” and he memorized the bins with no labels so he knew blue bin was those smalls and red bin was tiny cars then I had play road map mats/little carpets on floor so half of his toy room was a road 😂 we even had a toy grocery store conveyer belt and cash register where we’d group together the fake vegetables, cereals, dairy in bins like a grocery store, it was so much fun! More for me than for him!! Haaa I didn’t have a label maker back then we only had those old clicker label maker in one font and it constantly broke 😂

The other has spice blends like lemon pepper, steak seasoning. I can pull them out to view easier using the same shelf height you used. I also added a “shelf” over it giving me more space.

I love your idea of taking my pantry items out of their packages and putting them in storage containers. But I struggled when the package had the cooking directions for things like rice and pasta. I was cutting out the instructions and putting them inside the container where I'd have to fish them out at cook time. Then I came up with an idea. I now use my whiteboard markers to write short instructions right on the container - cook 7 minutes, 1 cup water 1 cup rice. The markings wipe off with water when I need to use the container for something else. By the way, I love the Rubbermaid Brilliance containers. They come in a ton of sizes and can be used to store things in the pantry, fridge, and freezer - and you can microwave in them.

Libreoffice has the ability to generate custom barcodes and QR codes. When I used to load trucks for one of the national package delivery services, each shelf would have a designation, and I can still tell where my packages were on the trucks because of the code. You can do something similar so that when you need to put stuff away from the collection bin in each room, you can do a quick sort and then just go to each area once to get everything put away. Basically room, shelving unit and possibly shelf and bin if appropriate. It's not a lot of effort once you're putting codes on things, but it allows for a much nicer experience when putting things away. You can just go around the house once each time and that bin is done.

Libreoffice has the ability to generate your own barcodes and QR codes, just insert it with the appropriate text. It's a good idea to also put the human-readable text of what the code says right under it. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but I think for things that are in the exterior storage, being able to check them in and out, would be great.

So Walmart has great value spices in those exact spice bottles for anyone that doesn't mind getting all the bottles at a slower pace. Or if you use food stamps, this is a great way to get those bottles without spending extra. You can also diy shelves out of sturdy cardboard and contact paper. While not clear, cardboard and contact paper is a great cheap, pretty way to make organizational containers. And it's even more customized to your needs. If you really need a clear side, you might be able to find a cheap picture frame to glue to the front of your box. Just cut the side you need clear off (or leave it empty) then glue in the picture frame. (Note: you may need to glue the glass to the frame to keep it in place.) We need to reduce constantly buying plastic. Reducing the purchase of plastic can lead to the reduction of it getting made. Plastic is made from petroleum, which is refined from crude oil, and making it creates a LOT of carbon emissions, not to mention the eventual pollution of the water supplies and damage to wildlife etc. It's just generally not good. You can DIY most of this stuff from cardboard. The cord box though... I don't recommend making that from cardboard or plastic. Wood would be your best bet. I'm sure there must be a wood version out there somewhere.

just a side note: if you keep your plastic containers or organizers for 30-40 years, they are not a problem. i think consumables wrapped in plastic are much worse. buy shampoo bars and unpackaged food and you are helping a lot despite the plastic containers.
@JamieM4702 жыл бұрын
@@nyxskids YW. And there's no way I can spend 40 bucks on a box to hide cords. But then I can't really afford hardly anything in the video. Thank you for these ideas! I agree with what you said about labeling containers. It also helps other people know where things are supposed to go. I would suggest looking into the importance of storing batteries properly. Storing them loosely is not recommended.
@SmallSpoonBrigade2 жыл бұрын
Yes, especially 9v batteries that are particularly prone to shorting out due to both connectors being on the same side. I personally 3d printed a battery holder for my AA and AAA batteries, you can also buy them, but I fill up the top and can then pull them out of the slot at the side. Makes it nice and need, but still easy to load and unload without risking a short. The AA, AAA, C and D batteries are probably fine, as long as it's just batteries as it's pretty much impossible for them to short out like that unless there's other metallic objects involved.

That's what I did. I found a D shaped lazy Susan with a smaller one in the middle. Everything can be reached by simply rotating the appropriate amount and it's got a 2nd tier. I hope whoever it was that designed it is rich, because it's awesome. Apparently, there's a bunch of other shapes out there for different situations in the closets, some that are D shaped and others that are simply 3/4 of a circle for when you've got a corner cabinet that can't otherwise be easily accessed.

I’d like to see organization tips for when you don’t have that many cupboards or drawers. I live in a new house, neighbours have to leave their buggies on the porch as there is no storage. There is no storage for the vacuum cleaner unless you put it in the closet in the lobby but then where do you put your shoes/boots?
