Hey, the black race has been fought at all angles even within our space. As a dark skin woman growing up in the Caribbean I felt very defensive of my color too. I was always teased and had to endure back handed comments from adults about beauty and being too black. I don't know why black skin is so hated all around this world.

Thank you!! I have the same issue as a African American woman. I was called Blackie, ugly, and skillet because of my skin complexion. When people describe me now, I'm the real black woman. She probably did have a hard time growing up but I feel she is better accepted in the black community more than I am.

You know why it’s a personal attack which stems from anywhere colonizer’s interacted with the people it’s their legacy divide and rule. We have to work on unlearning and build a strategy not to take it to heart and stop feeding into it.

Well a hit dog will holla. She doesn’t identify as Black, she’s said it but like Al said, she benefits off of Black spaces and support. I agree. I certainly hope they do devote an entire show to biracial people that struggle with who/how they identify in certain communities and spaces. And also how they’ve benefited or not from being biracial. This would be the perfect platform to have that conversation. What do we, the audience, have to do get them to explore this topic further.

Claudia thank you for talking about the Cape Verde culture of racism. I grew learning about this first hand when studying their music in college in the 90’s. As a black woman who was raised by a bi-racial mother, I understand both sides. Contrary to what we've been taught, it is unfair for a biracial child to claim one race and denounce the other because they are a part of both. I couldn't imagine going through life with that kind of burden. And Jocelyn was dead-ass wrong.
@emanualcarr7408
@emanualcarr7408 Жыл бұрын
I wish they would make Bi- racial a whole other race. Then they don't have to pick and choose. To me it's conflicting. Just create a whole other lane. It's too divisive for society to deal with. Many pick what to identify as when convient depending on what space they are in. It does not work in American society knowing the history. It's better to be Hispanic or Latino then to be Bi racial IMO. It's the equivalent of typical Black acting White at the work place thinking it will get them ahead in society. Sorry I'm with Dr. Umar on the race mixing thing.

Biracial is a real thing and identity of its own. Saying a biracial person is not black is a fact by definition and genetic make up - and not a slander to demean. Its problematic to be hurt, sad or mad at those most oppressed within a community to express their wish to protect their identity. Both biracial and non-black people should understand that you can share in a community without colonizing, shaming or bullying others into handing it “all” over to you.

It even bothers me when I hear white people with biracial kids say my “black child” as if their child is not good enough to claim all of their ancestry. If a black person cant say they are biracial because it doesn’t make sense the same is for biracial people and there is nothing wrong with that!!! I think biracial people should be able to identify as they choose. They are not just one race. Especially if one parent is white and one parent is black or some other mix of races. They can't just ignore an entire half of their DNA to make you feel better about being black. I swear that is one of the most ridiculous things that I think our community tries to push on to biracial people. Some biracial people happen to identify more with the black community, so they choose to identify as black, but that's their choice. However, technically they are not just black, and they should not be bullied by other black people to identify one way or the other just to make you feel comfortable with them. The level of arrogance with that line of thinking is so infuriating.

I watched the episode and I can definitely relate to Al's point "I'm sick of seeing our beautiful black women allowing themselves to be exploited for financial gain." It is one thing to be human and react instead of responding. We've all done it. However, I believe that Joseline knows that her sweet spot is ratchett ignorance. Which may speak to her lived experience and trauma, I don't know. Also, while Joseline did not throw the first punch, she definitely started the confrontation with her verbal blows. To further clarify: the system actually does care whether or not your biracial, black, light, dark, phenotypically black etc. In fact, the privileges, social advantages, disparages and all vital outcomes of life are almost as vast/large between biracial groups and black groups - than between black groups and white groups. And these measure of disparage only get larger when considering BW specifically. Identity, racial hierarchy, colorism and white adjacency in our global world absolutely matters. @@woodswal Which I acknowledged in my comment. If she’s only partially black, why would she identify as such? And why would anybody be upset that she doesn’t and try to bully her into doing so?

I’m glad they posted this. Because I was hoping to be able to add to the larger conversation of what happened on the show. Most of reality TV has turned to ****. But I’ve really been enjoying watching this show, as I always wanted to go to an HBCU and didn’t have the opportunity to (maybe some day if I go back to get my MBA). But from day 1 Joseline has been problematic, yet unchecked. And unfortunately, as she stated in her bts interviews “Who gonna check me, boo?!” There in lies the problem!! She has never really been held accountable for her behavior EVER (on this show and all the ones she’s been affiliated with previously - Love & Hip Hop, Celebrity Boot Camp and the one she produced). As a result, this has been brewing for some time. When she made the first few comments and Amber calmly walked out, she was allowed to continue with the disrespect. I work in education and have for nearly 20 years from K-12 and have coached adults and college students(young adults) and NEVER EVER do I tolerate disrespect in my classroom (virtually or in person); whether it’s directed towards me or someone directing it towards their peers. Joseline should have been checked by that professor or those producers and been told that it’s ok to have an opinion but once you start throwing insults and disrespect and antagonizing other students you have to go. PERIOD! She could have continued that class another day or simply made up the work. But the truth is they wanted good TV so they allowed this to escalate and then say “We don’t condone violence.” Although I understand where Amber was coming from. I don’t care for her as a person and I most definitely recall when she denounced being “black.” So to Al’s point, I’m tired of celebs only wanting to claim being black when it’s more convenient. Be who you are. But don’t bring that over here if you’re not truly willing to be in the trenches and the struggle and fight with US (as a people/community) in this country. Just the night before, she shut down on her friend (Kway) about defending her like she had it all together and could handle anything that came her way. But then you allowed Joseline Hernandez (who has always been a big little girl) to possibly jeopardize this opportunity and for you to graduate...and for what?!! Because the fact IS...When you KNOW WHO YOU ARE, you don’t have to keep running around, puffing your chest every chance to get to prove it. Ok, I’m done. Haha 😂

Claudia, I am a Cape Verdean woman and like Q stated this is a much deeper conversation. CV didn't get out independence from Portugal until the 70's. Like many other islands that were mainly utilized for slave trade. So, yes the psyche of many older CV generations were one of racism because they were black woman that were raped by European men.Again way deeper conversation since it can apply to Dominicans etc. I immigrated at 5 years old and certainly to learn one's history is Power and healing not bashing my ancestors for their will to survive colonialism.

@@denisehenry3427 🙄🤦🏿‍♀️ I wish you all would research your family's history and know for a fact not just regurgitate indoctrination. I am considered a dark-complected black woman, my grandmother on my father's side was the same complexion as my biracial children. But my grandmother wasn't bi-racial. She was a Seminole Aboriginal. So many "black" people assume that we have some type of mixture in our family's history when in a lot of cases when you look at your records you won't find that smh

Tbh this is our fault, self included. We have to stop stamping people as black just because of their proximity to black people and culture. Her being bald is a power move, would we consider her black if she wore he natural straight hair? She’s not half black she’s a quarter and is proud of it also it’s not negative she’s admitted to having privilege so who’s to say her making it clear she’s mixed is actually a good thing? This conversation is so nuanced I’m not dragging an ambitious woman for not claiming to be black.

I totally agree. The conversation is truly uneducated and uninformed. And it’s sad how many black women don’t value their identity or understand the very negative and dangerous implications of its erasure by those who haven’t lived it. Amber said nothing wrong…why would she identify as something she is not - by sight and genetics.

Says who? I’ve been following Claudia for years. Until RHOA I didn’t realize she was biracial. She clearly looks black. So she shouldn’t acknowledge that she’s black even if she looks it?

Claudia looks biracial and should have an issue being biracial. You are still apart of the community and share in its history, culture, blood line etc… - without shaming or bullying BW into handing their identity over to you. It’s ok to be what you factually are without feeling like you don’t belong.

Yes, it is okay to be biracial, but if a person wants to claim themselves as Black, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Let people be what they want!

@@mamaj7104 and that’s the issue now, people living in a world of delusion and fantasy. You are what you are. 🤷🏽‍♀️. Sorry if I see someone that is clearly biracial or multiracial I’m not calling them black. AND THAT IS MY CHOICE. Meghan is not black, Zendaya is not black, Tia and Tamara are not black. And you know what that is ok. You don’t have to be one or the other.
