The fact that it's based off the 52 blue whale, the "loneliest whale in the world", has me tearing up even more. The name definitely fits the song - beautifully sad.

When I first head it, I thought maybe he was talking to God. Where is the source that references it's written with the whale in mind? That is so sad and heartbreaking either way. Such a beautiful track.

Not sure if there's an article where they've talked about the meaning, but prior to the premiere, we were in the live chat talking about what to expect, and I mentioned this; they responded with the "👀" emoji so I suppose it's right lol. Hope that helps! I can definitely see both things working with it though; Amber Run has a great way with words and making me tear up.
