Nothing usually happens. Its not as if your claiming its your art work. I've used dozen of anime photos for past as thumbnails for KZbin videos and nothing ever happens. Besides bigger companies like Sega aren't going to go out of their way to sue you over you are using a picture of sonic as the thumbnail. The safest route is to always credit the company, creator, or artist and not altering it and considering it yours. Same with music, look at sewerslvt they remixed and used samples from different music composers and they are famous. You should be fine.
