AMD's new Ryzen 7 7700 is a cheaper, lower TDP version of the 7700X. The new CPU competes most directly with the R5 7600 -- which is a price class lower and manages to gather most of the (gaming) performance -- and the i5-13600K, which often outpaces it in production and gaming, or at worst, equals it. This testing benchmarks the R7 7700 vs. the R7 7700X, i5-13600K, R5 7600, and more. We also have tests dating back to the AMD R5 2600, as tested in 2022-2023, to look at possible upgrade options for those wishing to stick with AMD.
Watch the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 CPU review here: • Crazy Good Efficiency:...
Overall, the i5-13600K and R7 7900 (next review!) are more compelling for higher-end work and gaming, while the R5 7600 is more compelling for gaming-only as it achieves most the performance for far cheaper.

Error correction (no impact on conclusion or CPU in review): The RTX 4090 chart at 8 minutes 13 seconds has a 3700X result that we've identified is incorrect. It is the only incorrect result. The result should read 235.9FPS AVG, 157.7FPS 1%, and 140.8FPS 0.1%. We identified this error when rerunning the CPU for other tests. We apologize for the error. Fortunately, there is no impact on the Ryzen 7000 CPUs being reviewed; however, we pride ourselves on correcting errors in the rare instances they happen so that the community has the right data. @@0xBULLgogi Currently on 3700X, which is an upgrade from 1600, I ultimately couldn't justify paying to upgrade from a decent 8-core CPU to a better one. The only time I've followed through on a same core count upgrade was i5-750 to i7-870, since I got the latter for free at a previous job.

@@0xBULLgogi Thought about it some more. Reconsidered (again) and will go ahead with the 5800X3D after all, saving the 3700X to make a refurbished build for a friend. Turns out the 7900X3D won't have added V-cache on more than 1 CCX, so while it would be an upgrade, it may not be quite as gargantuan as anticipated. Speculation on the price is that it will be at least twice where the 5800X3D is now. So really, close to $700 just for the CPU alone at launch. It's interesting to see the review after 9 months. I recently updated my system. A couple of weeks before this I was reading and watching reviews. I ended up choosing the 7 7700 because of its high power efficiency (which is important these days) and low cooling requirements. Its performance is more than enough for everyday tasks and it handles gaming very well. The i5 13600K is definitely a great processor, and now there's the i5 14600K, which is pretty much the same. But at what cost is its superiority achieved? Now they cost almost the same. But... the i5 13600K beats the 7 7700 in work applications by an average of 5-10%, and not everywhere. In games there is almost no difference or can only be seen under a magnifying glass. Especially when it comes to 2K or 4K resolution. Where is the significant gap here? And this “power advantage” comes at the expense of much higher power consumption and increased heat dissipation. And here the difference reaches several tens of percent not in favor of the i5 13600K! And after that talk about the incomprehensible status of 7 7700? It's funny. Yes, I would like to see the price lower, but on the other hand, this is a promising and quite powerful 8-core processor on a new platform that will be supported for several years. Within a year, the AM5 platform got rid of many childhood diseases. Now is the time to buy a new AMD platform. This is not an advertisement! And after 2-3 years, if necessary, you can simply install a new processor without changing the motherboard. And for Intel this is the final LGA 1700. A good ending, but this is the final.

The 0,1% lows might be pretty run dependent, but it could be interesting to see also on the summary graphs perhaps an evaluation on how close to average fps can these different CPUs hold the lows. Predictability is after all one of the most important aspects of gameplay feel: it goes as far as constant 80 fps being far better feeling than average 100fps, but fluctuations between 50 to 150.

The difference between a certain CPU's average and its 1% and 0.1% lows seems to be quite the same between Intel and AMD, doesn't it? I didn't see any noticeable gap. Could you please point out which game if you identified a significant advantage AMD has compared to Intel? Maybe I misunderstood your comment... Or would you say in general that on AMD the lows are closer/tighter to the average than on Intel 13th gen?

The problem is these numbers will not look the same with say a 7900 XTX w/ SAM enabled. If you're partnering these CPUs with an AMD GPU, you would probably want to go for the 7700 over the Intel CPUs, especially considering the ability to substantially upgrade later on the AM5 platform as opposed to the intel platform that won't likely see much benefit in upgrading. It's also worth noting that with less than a 4090/7900, you'll likely see much less difference in performance between CPUs

Meaning still the 7700 will itself cost probably less than the 13600k. So i am really thinking between those two. What is a little compelling to me (towards the 7700) is that if I take the 7700 I can take a B650E board and thus maybe more easily upgrade my graphics card in the future generations. Also the general future aspects of AM5, also general potential futureproofness of the am5 platform. Not really sure at the moment what to think ... lets wait what the 7800x3d has to offer.

B650E interests me as well because of PCIE GEN 5, so I may do a graphics card upgrade in 2 to 3 generations. @@Ugga-Bugga Well seriously spoken, yes PCIE GEN 4 is plenty enough for years to come especially for graphics cards. Unless there come out new technologies that use that extra bandwidth. What I was trying to stress is, that currently the LGA 1700 is a dead end platform, so is AM4. If you upgrade every 10 years like you say, then of course lifespan of a plattform can be completely ignored by you. would be interesting how the 7700X will perform with turning off PBO compared to the 7700 nonX (w/o PBO) - will it just be like the 7700 (w/o PBO)? - will it be worse that the 7700 (w/o PBO)? - will it be still a little bit ahead the 7700 (w/o PBO)? - will the frametimes benefit like the 7700 (w/o PBO)? - what's about power consumption?

I think it's too much dependand on the motherboard you choose which means that they'd need a fully kitted out performance MoBo and a barebones efficiency-MoBo which would drastically increase their testing efforts for only a small part of their viewers

@@grrkaa8450 No. Intel REKTS AMD there. Big-Little is the reason. Tech Notice already tested that, if you combine iddle power draw and load for real world productivity (anything that isn't Cinebench or CPU based Blender render because you would use NVIDIA GPUs to accelerate those workloads). 12th gen i7, i5, and 13th gen i5 DESTROY the initial Ryzen 7000 lineup for perfomance per watt, literally TWICE the perfomance per watt for Intel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHm6qXSagLBnjsk

I still think you should include a factorio benchmark. It wouldn't be difficult to source an appropriate save from the subreddit or discord. As a simulation game, it would test CPU power very well, and with the graphics being sprite-based, you'd never hit a GPU limit.

The “x700” part always seems to release at bad value but after sales usually ends up amazing value due to lower power draw than the next step up and close performance. I very much regret getting the 5800x instead of the 5700x

Well, this is exactly what I was saying in the announcement video for these. When the X3D CPUs hit, it's going to be even worse, they're definitely going to have to just cancel some of these SKUs because they're cannibalizing themselves.
@grrkaa8450
@grrkaa8450 Жыл бұрын
I can imagine that maybe they won't cannibalize themselves at all as enthusiasts will buy the non-X CPUs and clock them as needed while OEM/prebuilt systems will be sold with X-CPUs and gamers will buy the X3D-SKUs

Except they aren't - TDP is an important metric wherever electricity is expensive to produce or can't be generated by renewable sources. I'm thankfully in a country that uses nearly 90% cheap green energy, so I don't give much of a damn about having a super high efficiency part in my personal rig, but anyone in Europe would very much be considering the Ryzen 7000 non-X line for their superior efficiency.
@Dexx1s

@@grrkaa8450 If they're sold through retailers, they're, by definition, not being used by OEMs. I'd be able to go to any retailer and see a 7900, 7900X AND 7900X3D, all close in price to each other or close to another SKU. All three can't properly exist together. We're already seeing here that the 7700 is pointless because of other SKUs. And then there's Intel. Typically, you only have one or maybe two pointless SKUs in a generation but here, it's much more than that.
@Dexx1s

@@Gabu_ You know you can toggle PBO on both the X and non-X chips right? TDP doesn't mean anything here. And to he honest, most don't give a damn about the energy cost. Even less would care about the energy cost difference between these SKUs.
@filedotjar

@Gabriel Guedes Balogo there's also price as a huge factor. a lot of people don't have thousands of dollars for a new pc, and they're going to try to find the best fps to dollar ratio they can. the 7000 non x series has that better than anyone at the moment. I do hope the incoming non k Intel chips are still competitive though, because as much as I typically prefer amd cpus over intel, I prefer competition more.

I know how everyone is complaining about how your videos are boring, but honnestly since a bit you are putting not really more energy but more pacing, and staying less on the graphs, letting the people who are intrested by something witch is not the focus of the video pause themselves. Also, i really like competition, my 5600X witch i bought 4 months ago is already getting shredded for a similar price, even if it's really good in gaming, and i oced it to 4.52 ghz boost (auto oc) and enabled PBO ect so i am drawing more than 100 watts, didn't really look but dang.

You aren't actually considering the idle power which the CPUs run at >95% of the times. AMD idles @ 55W while Intel's idles @ 10W (due to it's E cores). Again, if energy consumption is what you're worried about, Intel is going to be the better bet because AMD takes more energy to run the same work compared to Intel. Though, you need to look at the peak to pick the CPU cooler in any case.
