Ryzen 3000 RAM frequency, latency, uclock, mclock, and fclock matter more than anything else for the R9 3900X, 3700X, and 3600. We're looking for the best RAM for Ryzen.

Gigabyte X570 Master on Amazon: geni.us/WJgNK

We benchmarked an AMD R9 3900X Ryzen 3000-series CPU with various kits of memory from HyperX (Kingston), Crucial (Micron), GSkill, Corsair, and GeIL across two motherboards (the X570 Aorus Master and X570 Godlike). This matrix of results allows us to have a fuller picture of truly bad memory/board combinations for Ryzen 3000 and demonstrates results scaling from low frequencies to high. Critically, we also tuned fclock, uclock, mclock, and the ratios between them, as we went. Kits include 2400MHz, 3000MHz, 3200MHz, 3600MHz, 3866MHz, 4000MHz, and overclocking up to 4200MHz, along with primary, secondary, and tertiary timing adjustments as needed. For the most part, we tested with XMP, but further manual tuning was also done, along with software-assisted manual tuning from Ryzen Memory Calculator. Remember, buying the "best" RAM for Ryzen 3000 isn't good enough -- you also need to buy the right motherboard with the RAM. If the memory isn't on the motherboard's QVL, it may exhibit exceptionally poor performance.

From what I know, raise the frequency to 3600, then lower the timings to as low as they go, with 1.4v being a "cap" for your voltage. Anymore than 3600 will cause a performance hit, unless you feel like raising the Infinity Fabric speed.

Ok, so my take away here is that, 3200 C16 is around 100 CAD, 3200 C14 is 170 CAD, and 3600 C16 is around 180 CAD. Difference in performance between 3200 C16 and 3200 C14/3600 C16 is about 1-3% but for 70-80% more cost. The best value to performance goes to 3200 C16 by a long shot thank you, but Steve forgot to mention this.
@Miggsval
@Miggsval 4 жыл бұрын
Not entirely true, the cl14 en cl16 kits have B-die making them able to have very tight timings using dram calculator or doing it yourself. So performance would go up even more. You could compare i1t to the 3800mhz kit with the 1:1 ratio. So your looking at 10-15% performance for 70-80 bucks. Still not efficient but worth it imo.

@@cristianfatu2088 good choice of motherboard and cpu. In terms of memory in my country 3200 cl16 is the same price as 3600 cl18. Its better to get 3600 cl18 because 3600 ram will make it so you ryzen 5 3600 infinity fabric runs at 1800 mhz which is basically the highest it can go. If you want to best you can either go 3200 cl14 of 3600 cl 16 b-die memory but since you dont wanne spend a lot on ram you can go with either 3200cl16 of 3600cl18! You don't want to overclock in your case. You want to adjust the various timings but leave it at 3600MHz. If you really drilled down into the nitty-gritty then you can mess with FCLOCK etc (see Buildzoid videos) but when 3600MHz already I'd just concentrate on getting to something like 16-18-18-38 or similar.

I think it's DDR related. 20ish years ago it wasn't just speed you had latency to deal with too. Ironically the latency we get these days is HORRIBLE compared to what we got back then, but the higher speeds more than make up for it. I think prior to DDR it was really just a question of ram speed and it had to match your system bus. Like 100mhz or 133mhz. lol

I got two sticks when Ryzen 1 came out, because B die, 1k series getting it to 3200 was a struggle, 2k series it was happy at 4000, 3k series 3600 cl15 on dram calc performance settings... this has turned into such a lottery; CPU x SOC x MB x RAM - all the stars have to align. Still, it lasted me ~ 4 years, so can't really complain.

@Ace Cumen Not sure it is entirely linked to the memory kit itself, but more to the sillicon lotery as tighter timings are putting a lot of stress on the IMC. That said, most 3200c14 kits are able to be set at 3600c14 manually should your CPU IMC supports it, and will do 3600c16 if not. So while I do agree on the economical stand point, technically I'm not sure GSkill is to blame, this is OC territory for the IMC, nothing is guaranted.

Steve is expressing his feelings about this whole topic in the thumbnail, just giving the bird xD As an owner of a Ryzen 2000 processor, I find it's tolerance for memory really weird. And its a Ryzen 7 2700 in a laptop so it's not like I can just check a motherboard compatibly chart. It came with 2x8gb 2400mhz, and I bought a kit of G.skill 2x8gb 2400 for it and it booted and benchmarks ran fine, but games wouldn't stay stable for longer than 5 minutes. So I ordered a Ballistix kit, it was supposed to be 2x8gb at 2400, but I was sent a 1x16gb at 2666. For the heck of it, popped it in anyway. The processor loves it. Still in dual channel despite being 3 sticks in a 4 slot board, performance metrics went up, things running better than normal. So, just gonna leave it at that, as the adage goes; if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

People use "sweet spot" to describe both performance and, separately, value. Getting to 3600MHz CL14 (and rest of timings) gets you MOST of the performance possible from the CPU assuming no other bottlenecks, but there's still FCLOCK etc (see Buildzoid) that can improve things further... as far as sweet spot for VALUE then in Canada it was and probably still is 3200MHz CL16 as 3600MHz CL16 was 50% higher price... 3600MHz CL16 gets you almost all performance, and CL14 (etc) again is more still though I doubt most kits will get you there. Not sure how many are B-die but I suspect the ones that are may not be the best value... how much EXTRA does it cost over getting a 3200MHz CL16 kit that's been tweaked? And how much extra real-world performance are you getting for that cost?

Doubt there's enough difference in real world gaming to justify the blood, sweat and tears involved however.

You should consider doing a video on using two dual rank DIMMs versus two single rank DIMMs. This seems to affect performance on Ryzen by up to another 5-10%. Meaning a system with four memory ranks that manages to hit 3800Mhz CL16 (or faster) is likely to be very substantially faster. I hit a top 3 score on the CPU passmark with a dual rank 2x16GB setup on my 3700X and PBO. Not too bad for the affordable Micron Rev E I used.

I was using a Pentium 4 as a wayback to how decoupled the processor was to RAM and so on and with LGA775 you could go as high as Core 2 Quad. E.g. OCing a Q6600 is easier with DDR3 because it can go higher freq to match ratios instead of hoping your DDR2 can go 1066 or 1333 even with loose timings. Back then too I didnt need to worry about Hypertransport or ratios and uncore and just OCed my Pentium 3 266 to 533 with just doubling the FSB -- up until Core 2 Duos and Quads of even the lowest models (like the E2140 starting at~1.6GHz) achieving at least 3GHz so long as you set PCIE, SATA, and RAM freq to fixed. Also since there's no IMC in the CPU itself, overvolting ram doesnt cook the CPU, just the chipset.

This was a fantastically informative video. Thank you for taking the time to make it! There is one benchmark you might consider for future memory testing. Factorio's simulation speed has been demonstrated to be highly sensitive to RAM speed much more so than CPU clock. Upgrading RAM will often result in much higher gains than upgrading to a faster CPU. I believe the command line has useful tools for benchmarking, and the simulation speed can be unlocked to run as fast as the system can support. The game measures it in UPS (updates per second). Many players and the development team keep save games of very large maps for performance testing. This might be a good way to eliminate the concern with GPU bottlenecking and better highlight differences in RAM speeds.

Such a shame that you didn't test the 2400 kit with the Fclk set to 1900Mhz. If you had, you would have seen that the 2400 kit would have jumped way up the list performing closer to the systems with the 3600Mhz installed. In fact you would likely have seen that the Ryzen with 2400 Ram @1800/1900FCLK performed pretty much identically to an Intel system with the same GPU and memory installed. If you had done that, you may have had the realization that the assumptions that Ryzen has a similar relationship to memory transfers that Intel does is WRONG. The only real relevance that memory has had to date is that it automatically increases FCLK up to a lmit of 1800-1900Mhz. Latency certainly helps as it improves transfer efficiency but it is more in terms of fine tuning an not the core reason for the system performance at a given level. 1900 FCLK bandwidth well exceeds the maximum throughput that 2400 Ram can provide, leaving additional data transfer headroom available to the GPU to read the L3 Cache to obtain its instructions to render Frames. 2400 ram and a GPU will come close to but not quite saturate teh Infinity Fabric interconnect. Faster Ram can still saturate the IF interconnect between CCD and IO die Ringbus, running at the Cache multiplier frequency has even more data transfer overhead available so GPU requests and CPU requests do not come close to saturating the ringbus connection. The only reason Fast Ram has helped to date is because of Ryzens relationship between Ram frequency and FCLK when running at 1:1

Can you do a overview on ram with Threadripper boards? iam sure that will be much more difficult reaching good speeds, outdated QVL listings.. specially when you want 64gb or higher, with 4 modules its getting hard and the modules from QVL are hardly to get. I will be very pleased if you can give this attention too.

Thanks. Still trying to decide on getting an X570 Taichi with T-Top and running 4 sticks vs just 2 in daisy on an MSI board. 3600 is a solid spot

I think for 3600 t-top or daisy both just fine, over than 3800 may become a problem for daisy but mb's bios can make a different

Don't get the Taichi. The software is subpar for light effects and mine had weird quirky and janky features. Like forgetting my over clock setting and the wifi shutting off for no reason. It's solid on paper but iffy for long term hard use. Avoid it since none of my Asus or MSI ever gave me problems.

AMD is toying with 4000 support at very least 3800, and moving FCLK to 2000, we shall see soon enough. If you're building new might as well get 4000. Worst comes to worst you can drop to 3600 or 3800 and tighten the timings.

The ram I bought with my board when Ryzen first came out I believe was degraded from the get go. If I run it on its XMP profile then it causes the system to crash and Prime 95 fails its tests as well. If I run it at whatever the board defaults the memory to then it runs fine and Prime 95 passes with flying colors.

I had this problem but it was because of the Gigabyte easy tune software. I guess it was fighting with ryzen master and the motherboard settings not really sure but once I Uninstalled it I never blue screened since and that's even messing with memory timings and running plenty of prime95
