Heard an interesting theory about the X3D chips, and the way they were launched. Maybe they had too many chiplets, so they made the 7950x3d and 7900x3d prior to releasing the 7800X3d. Think about why they "park" a CCD during gaming. It's not a good look, but I digress.

@@AwesomeBlackDude The "X3D" CPU's refer to the L3 cache that is stacked on the CPU die. It has nothing to do with GPU's. It's about getting a form of memory that is extremely close to the CPU cores. This can improve performance with any GPU. That said, I do agree with you that GPU "MSRP" prices are a joke, and I too believe that they have been artificially inflated, and have been for about 6-7 years now, from all manufacturers. My advice, buy used. I am still running a Titan Xp and a GTX 1080 in both of my systems. The used market is looking good right now, so I think it's time to upgrade both systems. Got a line on a 3060Ti and a 3090. And before you say anything, I need the 3090 for 3D programs. I use 3DSMAX and AutoCAD. The VRAM will make a big difference for that.

1 year later...now that the 7900X3D is $400, the answer is YES...The 7900X3D uses less power, produces less heat, handles production tasks the same as the 7900X BUT has much better gaming performance than the 7900X as well. Therefore, the 7900X3D is a great "in between" from the 7950X3D (which is still very pricey) and the 7800X3D which has great gaming performance and horrible production performance. The 8000 series chips are a disappointment with only PCIe 4.0 and 8 PCIe lanes for gpu from what I've seen.

The 5800X3D is basically AMD's GTX 1080 - they made something so good and priced it so well, that they have trouble passing the bar they set themselves. I haven't been this impressed by an upgrade ever since i bought my HD 5870 a while back. It's one of those monumental achievements you witness once every decade or so.

Along with a GPU upgrade and maaaybe RAM, I think I'll be set until the 2030's, especially with the prices they're asking for a lot of this stuff. The fact that they allowed us to use our older boards for the 5800X3D is probably the most awesome thing that could have happened for us. Being able to use my X470-F Gaming to run this chip instead of having to wait and see is simply awesome, especially when I realize that I will be able to run this current system for years to come. I truly think that in AMD's mind, they needed the boost in advertising for the 3D cache abilities and took the hit to do it, not really realizing just how awesome the 5800X3D would be and as you said, are now struggling to get people to see the value in upgrading to the newer chip with all it's needed hardware to get there. The idea of spending $1500 just to have a chip that is around 15% better is a hard hit to ask. Top that with needing special software to get to work right and to me, that's a deal killer. I truly think that the 7800X3D is going to be the only 3D cache chip worth getting in this gen.

I think the 5800x3d was really a watershed moment for AMD. Last hurrah for Am4 sure... But the new chips really just don't do it for me. The value proposition just isn't there. I think the one to watch for *would* be the 7800x3d but the reduction in clockspeed to artificially segment their product stack combined with the inability to overclock it (do these chips even support PBO... Will they boost higher, or is the max boost hard locked like the 5800x3d?).. Well its a d*ck move, AMD

Just wanna say as a 3D professional I can't be more happy about the power efficiency benchmark :) whenever a new CPU is released, your review is the one I'm looking for. I to am looking for a new CPU for 3D work. This video has shown me that the 7900X3D is a waste of "Cache" 😂 so i am now torn between the 7950X3D and 7950X. i think i am heading toward the 7950X3D due to the lower power consumption over the long term, like @du ich i do a lot of 3D modelling and some rendering in Blender / Maya i also play and work in game dev so it makes sense. @@vic62cu Also my idea. build an extra pc with my current 3800X and the choice is either the 5900X or 5800X3d which is roughly same cost and then some 3600 ddr4 for the new cpu and keep my old 3200 ram for the 3800. Not sure the 5950 is worth the extra money compared to the 5900 if focusing on multithreaded perf. The 5800X3D can easy use my current 240mm Aio. The 5950 will most likely benefit from a 360 upgrade. But if really going for multithreaded perf. a shift to AM5 might be the better solution than locking it down to the old AM4 with no more upgrade path.

Why release a 3d chip then right after launch a 7900x chip then after launch a 7900x3d chip makes no sense to me. The 7950x is compared slightly to 7900x3d but why buy in all the confusion? I say wait until ddr5 prices drop and a better chip comes out.

@@mrdali67 i dont think am5 is even worth considering, 5950x is enough for multithread, do you NEED better perf or do you WANT its different from when AM4 was introduced in 2017, you didnt have options back then, well except for used xeons, now you do. imo the money you save can be spent on more ram better gpu if you need more cores, try to find a threadripper/ epyc deal (i would say get an 8380M if you find one for cheap, but i havent found one for cheap yet) although STH just did a vid on AM5 being used in 1U servers, which is interesting

For it's money and I had older AM4 platform i just doubled 0.1 and 1% percentiles in CP2077 on RX6800XT comparing to R5 3600. And I sold my 3600 so I got some money back.

I imagine it wouldn't fit well in your usual testing but would be cool to see you guys do some occasional or one off testing with VR titles. Things like the X3D CPUs have been noticed to really help out some VR workloads but there isn't much standardized testing out there, usually its just someone at home comparing their old vs new CPU when picking up a X3D.

I'd love to see the efficiency tuning from the X3D CPU's going over to the non 3D variants. Those power consumption numbers are remarkable compared to the non 3D's. Great job on the freaking quick review guys.

You likely can get pretty close in efficiency with the non-X3D parts. The biggest chunk of the efficiency gain should come from the lower power limits. There are other factors, like they probably binned the CCXes with cache for ones that run well on lower voltages, and some apps may run more efficiently with extra cache. But other than that, there are at least those three things you can already do: 1. enable PBO settings in the BIOS and put in the power limits of the X3D parts, or try to find limits that gives you good efficiency with acceptable reduction in perf. Most important one is the PPT limit here. 2. (easier) enable EcoMode. It's basically a preset of power limits, biased towards efficiency, but at still acceptable performance losses. 3. (easiest) Buy one of the Non-X variants. They come with lower power limits out of the box. they may be slightly worse bins, but otherwise the same.

That said, and FPS FPS jokes aside, have you considered dumping titles which achieve 1% lows above 200 frames per second from your day 1 coverage on the grounds that literally every modern CPU is a good experience? Seems like your 12 hours would be better spent testing games that still run poorly on last-gen hardware, like Cyberpunk, Flight Simulator, and Cities Skylines, as well as Civ VI turn times.

It just occurred to me that your current game test suite only has FPS-type tests. I would really like to see some turn time or similar benchmarks be brought back. Just for inspiration, HUB does Factorio, Wendell does Stellaris. I like them because they don't need the crutch of testing at 1080p with a 4090. And they show more scaling with cache. So something to try out in the 7800X3D review maybe?

It's all a matter of sense: not a single lifeform on earth would play another resolution than 4K with a 4080 or 4090 and the only games and resolutions that come near a synthethic benchmark (non-reality conform) are the ones where you got too many FPS the human body could notice and 1080p. In higher resolutions you wouldn't even notice a difference between all the CPUs. All in all it would just be more senseless and thrown out lifetime on the whole working process of content creating to bring even more 'synthethic' game benchmarks.

I agree, some more strategy games *because* those tend to be more CPU heavy for all the various interactions, dice rolls/chance and backend systems. In some cases over the course of a long game you could actually be looking at genuine time saving between turns. Just before anyone jumps on FFXIV or Tomb Raider not being FPS's, I think @triforian is really just generalising them as being control your character and move around kind of games, I got what they meant :D

Newegg is literally full of reviews with people saying that the 4090 is allowing them to get 600FPS in CS:GO (obviously not playing 4K) or that the 4090 is allowing them to max out their 360hz monitor in another game. Most people are literally buying those cards to pair 1920x1080p monitor. That's literally the truth.

@@MistyKathrine I entirely agree. Let's be honest, 4k gaming, especially for demanding games, is still a no-go, maxed out, at high FPS. I mean, natively, not with gimmicks like DLSS. So definitely, most people go for high or extremely high FPS on monitors with very high refresh rates, at 1080p or 1440p. Definitely not 4k. Not to mention, that if you enable Ray Tracing in games that support it, especially at 4k, your FPS decrease radically. And not only in 4k, on every resolution. 4k is definitely the most negatively impacted, though.

Not to mention that the charts are only showing stock settings. The 5800X3D is a fantastic undervolter- I set mine to 1.02 volts, which dropped idle temps by around 13°C, caused no instability, and PBO still overclocks all cores to between 4.4-4.8 GHZ. Just awesome. No need to go AM5 yet if you're primarily gaming.

Also, since the X3D series reduces dependency on communicating with RAM, speed and latency factors are not quite as important. So even budget DDR4 remains perfectly serviceable for gaming. Set RAM speed to 3600 MHz, with 1800 MHz Infinity Fabric clock, and you're good to go.

@@savagej4y241 I was tinkering with PBO and voltage with little changes, but ultimately, I was content getting the 5800x3d because its a "set it and forget it" kind of CPU. XMP and you're pretty much good to go.

@@burwood69 It's really also minimal how much more perf. you get with manually tuning your AMD cpu. Maybe a bit more on the ram unless you get really lucky with the silicon lotto of your cpu and your ram. At least with the older Zen2 parts. I got really little extra out of manually tuning my 3800X and 3200 Corsair kit. So I went back to PBO and just let the Mobo control the boost settings. Feel you get more from trying all core boost on Intel. Ryzen seems to be pretty good at finding a close to optimal boost for the individual cores. Just set PBO and forget it.

People here usually upgrade faster than normal, but in reality most people last 5-10 years on a build and with that in mind "investing in longevity" doesn't apply. Value is getting either the 5800x3d or something like the 13600 on a ddr4 Intel board and it will outlast the socket anyways. But I'm such tech fans here consider getting a 7800x3d and upgrading in 2025 (to perhaps a 9800x3d?) on the same mobo is also a good value proposition.

@@gozutheDJ depending on the BIOS, memory controller, and Ranks per DIMM and amount of DIMMS used, you may not be able to reach that speed. For instance on my 13900ks CPU and MSI Meg z790 Ace MB I’ve only been able to get up to 7200Mhz Ram XMP speed (2x16GB sticks Single rank per stick) that’s stable in all applications. I think part of this is that I’m using two dimm slots and the current MSI BIOS only supports up to this speed at the moment. However If I knew how to manually tweak/OC all the DRAM parameters in the BIOS I could probably get it stable at a higher speed. However my knowledge is limited when it comes to overclocking and stabilizing ram. IM having to rely on XMP profiles. Hopefully with a BIOS update I can get up to 7600-7800Mhz speed. On a side note, I’m really excited for the upcoming single rank 24GB DDR5 ram sticks. I know Corsair has advertised these coming out. I”d love to get 2x24GB single rank sticks at 7200Mhz+ XMP speed.

At the time of writing they are going for £659, meanwhile, I can get the following: 7950X - £560 7900 - £419 5800X3D - £309 The 7900X3D is double the price of the 5800X3D. Then there's the cost of motherboard to take into account... Lets not even think about the cost of modern GPUs. Unless the price of hardware drops significantly, soon, very few people will consider upgrading and PC gaming will suffer. A new PS5 can be bought for £500, £159 cheaper than this processor. Crazy times!

@@QueueTeePies or even better yet get the normal 5800X which is almost half the price of the 5800X3D, has the same performance in 95% of games at 1080p, can be overclocked, has higher clocks speeds, doesn't sacrifice workstation performance and also doesn't require you to spent 2k on a 4090 that will never be fully used at 1080p because anything less than that makes the advantage of the 3D cache shrink and if you play at 1440p or 4k you only paid extra for 5-10fps over the 5800X. Really the 5800X3D was ahead of its time in terms of not many stuff actually make use of the 3D cache but it also came out too late as GPUs aren't being done for 1080p no more which is a resolution that is slowly disappearing. My thinking is most people who have money to buy a 4090 will not bottleneck it by playing at 1080p. Still it is a nice upgrade option to have for previous AM4 owners but it is a very niche one that needs specific more expensive things to fully utilize it.

Unless your doing production suff (7950x) you go with 7800x3d if it's a new build if you currantly own a am4 motherboard then drop in replacement 5800x3d (or 5950x for production) and wait till 8000/9000 ryzen cpu is released (you should be good for at least 3-5 years really unless your playing cpu dependent games, factorio/oni/ksp1-2/flightsim/City skyline/simcity/some open world games like tarkov) Production depends what your doing as a lot of stuff can use gpu acceleration so may not actually need all those cores The extra latency of the 7900 are 7950x just means that you will have more cores but double the latency (5000/7000 ryzen generally doesn't run any worse 8 core vs 12/16 core versions, the older 1000-3000 cpus the latency impact could be significant times)

Likely the 7800x 3d won't be much slower than the 7950x 3d in gaming because the 700Mhz difference is between the die without the 3D V-cache and the one with. As that die will be parked while gaming, the 3d v-cache die will boost only to 5.25Ghz so with only 250Mhz of difference in gaming I believe that the difference might be minor to non existent if the 7800x 3D boosts slightly higher than the official number (common with other Ryzen).

I'd advise everyone to check the video on the channel from 3 days ago (at time of this comment), "AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D CPU Review & Benchmarks: $700 Gaming Flagship" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5imq4uagdKdhrs ) and check the sections with the code compilation (for Chromium) and file compression/decompression (in 7zip) as well -- I was surprised to see the 3D cache version chip doing worse. I would love seeing an occasional test with Handbrake of video deinterlacing and x264/VP9/AV1 encoding speeds, as that's the heaviest load I put on my poor wretched i7 4785T (and roughly-equivalent i5 4460 before it) and would be further surprised to see not benefit from extra cache, but I recognize that y'all are already doing a tanker-load of work already. :) Thanks so much, and _especially_ for the power consumption tests!

Does the chiplet with Vcache on the 7900X3D and 7950X3D really run that much faster than what the 7800X3D will? I keep hearing KZbinrs point to a chart that AMD gave for price/clock speeds/ etc.... but THAT chart doesn't show the clock speeds for the Vcache chiplet. There is no frequency validation given in this review. You can't compare the clocks between the listed specs for these 3 CPUs because they're different configs since the 7800X3D ONLY has the Vcache core chiplet. I assume that its clock speeds are similar to the 7900X3D and the 7950X3D Vcache core chiplet but I haven't gone through ALL the reviews to look for it. THIS channel usually does frequency validation but it didn't this time OR for the 7950X3D so you're saying things that I have doubts about and because you aren't showing frequency data for the Vcache chiplets I don't know what to make of anything you say about clock speeds when it comes to gaming since these CPUs would be using the slower clocked Vcache chiplet, for which AMD or you didn't show any data for.

The higher "listed frequency" for the 7900X3D/7950X3D is based on the non-vcache cores, the ones with the extra cache are around the listed frequency of the 7800X3D. The 7950X3D will probably have a marginal lead over the 7800X3D in gaming due to having a slightly better binned vcache CCD on average (and thus running around ~50-100MHz faster on average), at least when the core parking feature works properly, but that's it.

I buy what I want when I want with no regrets (apart from having far too much PC crap now from over the years). For context I always run Intel and have now switched to Nvidia (and Intel) GPUs personally. HOWEVER I did a build a while back for my brother in law and specced him with a B450M and 3700. Just upgraded him to 5800X3D which runs his MS Flight Simulator very sweetly on max settings @1440pUW even with his 2060 Super.

It would be really useful for streamers if you guys did a streaming(x264) while gaming comparison. Pitting the low performance e-cores vs the higher clocked amd cores might be interesting considering it's an actual usage case that streamers do consider when making their streaming PC, especially if they don't have access to NVENC encoding for whatever reason.

About the L2 cache amount you were talking about around 5:00, it doesn't really matter that there is less because AFAIK each core can only use its own L2 cache, so from a performance standpoint there is no difference between the 7950X3D and 7900X3D when L1 or L2 cache is concerned even if the total amount differs. L3 on the other hand is shared, although I'm not sure if the cores on one CCD can use the L3 on the other CCD, given they'd need to go over the infinity fabric and through the IO die.

They can access L3 cache on the other CCD. That however incurs additional latency from the inter chip databus.

Cores can definitely access data in the L3 cache of another CCD as that is required for cache coherency. The difference is that they can't fill the L3 on another CCD. The L3 on Zen is what's known as a victim cache: it only fills up with what got kicked out of the L2 cache of a core on the same CCD.
