In this interview with Justin Karter, organized by the Society for Qualitative Inquiry in Psychology (SQIP), Amedeo Giorgi, Ph.D., discusses how he developed the descriptive phenomenological method, walks through how to execute the different steps, and provides tips for learning the method.
Amedeo Giorgi, Ph.D., was a founding member of the first explicitly existential-phenomenological psychology doctoral program in the United Stated at Duquesne University. At Duquesne, he developed the descriptive phenomenological method, a philosophically rigorous qualitative research methodology. Throughout his career, including his time at Duquesne and Saybrook University, he has led the movement to redirect psychology away from a natural sciences paradigm toward a human science paradigm.
The interviewer, Justin Karter, is a doctoral candidate in psychology at the University of Massachusetts Boston, a student member of SQIP, and the newsletter editor for the Society for Humanistic Psychology.

I appreciate this so much. This recently came across my radar and I am considering using the Giorgi method for my research with artists in New Brunswick, Canada. I found this very helpful and informative. Thank you so much. Bravo - Amedeo you rock and Justin- good job on the questions and for this interview.

Descriptive Psychology (Ossorio, P.G., ) uses a formal and systematic approach to delineating all facts and possible fact (e.g., states-of-affairs) about the persons, world. This body of work is a pre-empirical approach at organizing the facts about personal, behavior, world. Perhaps it is worth a look. My PhD dissertation looks at the historical roots of this approach including the ideas of post-Tractatus Wittgenstein (i.e., On Certainty). I enjoyed your talk, Dr Bob Brill, Boulder, CO
