This is my first KZbin highlight video, so all feedback is appreciated.
I used the Japanese audio since that is what she was watching, if anyone is interested in a version with the English dub, please let me know.
Also, I will be eternally thankful to whoever decides to become my first subscriber.

This was fun. GitS is a classic and seeing Amelia's reactions to it was really interesting. The animation puts a lot of what's done today to shame, and the story still resonats and makes you think, even if I prefer the less stoic versions of the Major from the manga and Stand Alone Complex. I hope Amelia checks out that next. Stand Alone Complex especially is remarkable in how it predicts the of social movements we've seen grow out of the net and into the real world the last couple of years. While there are some parts that fell flat, like the live-action movie, this franchise as a whole is amazing and a true classic! Now I want to rewatch it all!

Takk for hyggelig kommentar. Jeg har også en preferanse for SaC, men det var veldig gøy å gjøre et dypdykk i 1995 filmen gjennom å redigere denne videoen.

It's kind of funny that Ame's first comment in the watchalong (that you captured) is about labor saving techniques in animation when this movie is one of the most insanely intricately animated 2D films of all time. Like, sure they did certain things to save budget but... this movie was not made to spare expenses.

Ame singing heals my soul. She totally nails that Japanese Min’yo vibrato. (Ps, the music in this film is fantastic, and this is coming from a percussionist.)

It's been many years since I've watched the whole movie, but there are 3 scenes I view on occasion: the opening, the invisible chase scene, and the fight with the tank. I'm interested to know what Ame gave the movie, but I guess I can put the watchalong on when I next watch it.

The only thing I don't like about this film is that Mamoru Oshii didn't employ someone to model the characters to look more like how they look in the GITS manga.

I’ve been putting off ghost in the shell but I think it’s time to start..... Anyone know what order to watch the show?

There is no connection between the movie and the anime, but i would recommend you to start with the movie as it was made before the anime and can serve as a good starting point. The anime is called Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, don't watch the one called Koukaku Kidoutai: SAC_2045, its really not good.

The comic, movie and TV shows have about the same premise and characters. You can read the comic to see the vision of the original work, which envisions a future world where cybernetics are a common sight. It’s surprisingly wordy and the Major is very wild and expressive, unlike the subsequent adaptions, but still remains professional. Despite the initial and occasional rough patches, the art was phenomenal. I’m not sure if it inspired the style of GUNNM or Eat-man, but it is definitely the essence of Japanese cyberpunk. The animated movie took a chapter in the comic, but mostly inspiration and reimagined the major a little. The major is less human, much colder and professional. The visual is just a great treat. While Akira had blown visual out of the park, GitS refined the expectation. Highly recommended. The second movie is the sequel to the first film, but I’m not going to recommend it if you are not invested. It’s alright. The TV series is in between the 2. There’s more backstory to the characters and the tone is lighter than the movie, similar to the original comic. The Major is also somewhere in between, very clearly human unlike the movie, but also professional. The art is also quiet remarkable, but not something that I would rave about. All of the adaptions, amazingly, retained the focus and theme of the comic. Social political issues caused by technology, parallel to that is the characters struggling about human consciousness and identity in a cybernetic world. The TV series just a little less subtle. The not recommended adaptions are the live action version and the Netflix funded animated series. The movie is no good because the focus of the story they tried to tell is all over the place because they tried to blend the TV series with the animated movie. The childhood friend storyline was important because of the long chain of events that preceded the reveal. The animated movie made the Major more inhuman, to portray the effect cybernetic have on the human’s soul. The Major was looking for answer about the state of existence the entire movie, which made her interesting. There’s nothing in the movie that attempts to portray the Major as a cyborg. She’s vulnerable and caring the entire time. It missed the point that the Major is supposed to be special, because she’s basically a machine. The comic Major is reckless, as the Major is a cyborg so she doesn’t care about danger. The movie Major is curious, but empty, always looking out for a form of satisfaction to her existence. The focus of the movie is the Major questioning existence due to her own unique background. The movie turned the futuristic story into the generic tale of corporation interfering with people by making the Major the focus. The Major in the movie don’t seem to be cyborg. She doesn’t act like a cyborg nor do anything cyborg like other than the action scenes. Other than the very pretty visual, the movie doesn’t seem to like the original show philosophising and the Major’s special role and special quality as a cyborg. It’s important because the entire theme of the series is humanity and cyberspace, and the Major is someone who’s almost completely robots, living most of their life as robots, but also very human in their own way, depending on the adaption. Making her completely human just make the entire meaning behind the Major lost. It’s like if Harrison Ford shows emotions all the time instead of acting basically like a robot while the Replicants act like robots in Bladerunner. The Netflix series is even more generic and unremarkable. There’s many parts in the show where the world looks just like ours, there’s no futuristic elements to them, and much of story has nothing inherently to do with futurism and cybernetic. If the story can be told without the futuristic part, just get rid of it.

@@lc9245 WOAHHH this is an even thicker response! I'll be sure to check on the first movie, then the TV series, then the second movie. While also avoiding the live-action. Thanks for such lengthy input. I appreciate your personal input into each adaptation. Though I might watch the live-action just to shit on it. I love sicfi so I'm sure I'm going to like if not love this. You really have a passion for ghost in the shell huh?

It depends on what you're looking for from this series. If you looking for something darker, a bit slower paced and contemplative, watch the '95 film and it's sequel, Innocence. If you're looking for something a bit more light-hearted and with a more equal balance of action and introspection, then watch Stand Alone Complex. If you want something more comedic with lots of world building, read the original manga. As for the rest, there's Arise, which is kind of a spiritual prequel that lies somewhere in-between the film and SAC in regards to tone, but it's pretty average in comparison. It was released as a series of four OVAs, but they were also compiled into a TV series called Alternative Architecture, and the story of Arise ends with Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie. There's also the 2017 Hollywood film, which is a sort of live-action remake of the '95 film with elements of Innocence mixed in, but it just doesn't manage to capture what made them so good, and is otherwise a very average action film. Finally, there's SAC_2045, which... isn't awful, but it isn't great either. It has a much weaker setup, the 3D animation just doesn't look good, the music isn't as memorable and overall it just doesn't hold a candle to the original Stand Alone Complex. There's also an updated version of the '95 film called Ghost in the Shell 2.0, but I'd suggest ignoring it and just watching the original film, as it reanimates a few scenes with some really weak looking CGI.
