La voz de Amelia era sobrenatural. Y humildemente pienso que sin menoscabo de su gran calidad, en parte se debió al tumor de tiroides que desarrolló, tanto así que después que se le removió ya no volvió a ser la misma. Ahora la que no tuvimos la fortuna de verla y oírla y solo juzgamos por las grabaciones tenemos una visión incompleta de su grandiosidad. Un verdadero prodigio de la naturaleza y no cabe compararla con la Callas, son de otra época y otro público. Cada quien tiene su lugar en el Cielo de las grandes cantantes. Por algo era el ídolo de otra grande Joan Sutherland que la visitó 3 años antes de su defunción.

Yo la escucho desde los 8, hace días cumplí 18 y me sigue impresionando, la primera grabación de Galli-Curci fue el Sempre Libera de La Traviata, quede enamorado de ella, hoy escucho a Moffo, Callas, Caballé pero... ninguna como la Galli-Curci

I have to disagree with most of the comments in this thread. I find Amelita's singing to be angelic and ethereal.....gorgeous. I have this CD and listen again and again. I find only Ponselle does Sull 'd Rosee better. I love Amelita's beautiful tones and I absolutely enjoy to the most her bird like qualities. Others find her trite or silly or whatever. I like certain things of Callas but give me Galli curci and Ponselle and i will be in Heaven forever!

With all due respect, Madama dal Monte was presumptious ..... In an age which included Tetrazzini, Galli-Curci, Melba, Sembrich, Hempel and Kurz (to name a few)... leaves her conclusion "simply" inconclusive and perhaps "superbly" inaccurate .......

Прекрасно. Какая лёгкость в исполнении, точные колоратуры. Но мне кажется, в некоторых моментах Амелита очень быстро пропевает пассажи,ми бемоль держит не так уж и долго Хотя что уж там, кто из современных певиц может так спеть технично колоратуры.Очень красивый тембр для колоратуры

@meltzerboy Lily Pons did the same ending (downward to F in her case) in 1930 RCA recording. We understand who was her model at that time.

unscribeable wonderfull, but , for me, the best primadonna singing this madscene is Toti Dal Monte. I mean, nobody in the worled can and could sing this better than Toti Dal Monte. Her interpretation was the top and it will be so in all future ?

As much as i admire and adore Galli Curcis pure and precise technique i do not believe i would have found her a convincing Lucia. Every soprano has her devotees. Jenny Lind for example had an adoring public and when it was announced that she would give three performances of Norma the box office went wild. Ticket sales tripled in price and after the fist night a crowd of three thousand cheered and pulled her carriage through the streets. Never the less. The critic for The Musical Sphere honestly reported that after the first few bars it was obvious that her pure soprano voice was incapable of delivering the required dramatic effect.

The demands imposed by Norma differ considerably from those of Lucia. Sometimes outstanding singers sing roles not consonant with their vocal equipment. Lind may have been one of those; Galli-Curci is in her element as Lucia and she is tack-on.

I do not think Callas and Galli-Curci were alike. Galli-Curci had a much lighter soprano voice and never could have sung the same area as in the heavy dramatic operas that Callas did. It is difficult to compare the two in their interpretations of these works in wich both sang due to the 100 years difference and the technology. I would guess that Callas had far more acting ability than most of the singers in the late 19th. Century. At that time it was not required or expected. Whether some disliked her voice or not, Callis was a consummate musician and a unique singer in the 20th. Century. Today a singer is required to be great looking, sing well and do some real acting not just standing on the stage in costume.

Agree for the acting, but about singing well, I don't! Amelita, Ponselle, Tetrazzini, Caruso and their generation could fill up the theatre with a wisper, nowadays they shout and you can feel the effort of their squeezed throat so that sometimes they need microphones

I do not agree with your analysis, with respect. On record Amelita was never guilty of ugly tone, as Maria was. Amelita's voice, like John McCormack's light tenor in his prime, was memorably beautiful. She must have had good voice projection to have lasted so many years at the Met, without a microphone. Her musicianship and voice won her 17 curtain calls in 1917. No doubt Callas was the superior actress. She had a voice like steel in her prime, granted. But, like looks, acting is not everything or even nearly everything. It is like saying the awful Peter Pears with all his obvious faults was the greatest. He had everything but voice!
