Amen Brother: Harry Mack Freestyles Over Classic Drum Breaks

And now for something completely different… 🥁🥁🥁 I’ve been wanting to do a video like this for the longest time, and I’m so happy we finally made it happen. I often mention how important my drumming has been to my development as a freestyler, and to my understanding of music in general. Back at the old home studio I didn’t have enough space to keep my drums set up all the time, and as a result I spent a lot less time playing them. One of the best parts about moving into my new studio space has been always having my kit set up and ready to play. Over the course of the past few months I’ve been really reconnecting with the instrument, and in the last couple weeks especially I’ve been playing almost daily. It’s been enriching for my soul, and I’m excited to share a little piece of that with y’all.
The beats I’m playing are lifted from some of the most sampled records of all time. These breaks (the original ones) are foundational to the DNA of hip-hop. My verses were freestyled completely off-top and I attempted to weave in a bunch of references- some to artists and groups who have sampled the breaks themselves, as well as other musical (and some non-musical) influences and inspirations. 20,000 Mack points to the first person who successfully identifies every allusion made!!
Combining rhythm and language is what I’m all about, and this video is intended to show that connection. The first instruments utilized by human beings were drums (or probably sticks on cave walls) and the voice. There’s something visceral and deep about the stripped down sound of those two instruments alone. I had a lot of fun making this video and I hope y’all dig it! As always, don’t forget to share 🙏🏻❤️🚀

I understand my role as a fan of Harry Mack. Watch his videos, make sure I’m giving a thumbs up and commenting, buy some merchandise, and tell my friends. I also took it a step further, purchased 4 tickets for the April show in New York, which I am very excited about! In return, Mr. HM is allowed his creative freedom and the opportunity to further elevate his craft and make the world a better place. I think that is more than a fair exchange. So please everyone who watches his videos, do your best to contribute to allow this incredibly talented and humble man continue to work his magic and bring smiles to peoples faces and love to peoples hearts. 👑

Y’all nailed them all I think. But I do take issue with one thing. These aren’t really “jazz beats.” If anything, these are funk breaks from mainly funk tracks. The general drumming “style” you should most definitely characterize as “jazz drumming,” but not the actual samples themselves. Jazz drumming is a pretty broad term though. Thanks for doing this y’all. Just wanted to communicate clearly about the samples and the tracks themselves from which the samples were taken, especially for people out there who haven’t logged nearly as many hours listening as we have.

This is so mind blowing that I didn't peep it the first couple of times I watched. He's playing the original drum beat, freestyling, scheming on the artists that sampled the drum beat, and then showing at the end of each freestyle a record the beat was sampled in. 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯. That slowdown of the second beat to NWA was nuts, as well as the switch to finger drumming in the third freestyle to show how that beat was chopped and sampled was brilliant. Wow. HMack, definitely over 9000 with this.

For those who don't understand what Harry just did or know the history: Clearly he just physically played the original jazz beat for each song and freestyled flawlessly. But, while he was at it, he paid homage to the original jazz artist and then took us through a hip hop history lesson of other great artists that sampled these original tracks (plus a few others that jumped out to the ear drum, like Real Love by Mary J.). Genius. Harry Mack is a true student of jazz and hip hop. I look forward to more of these treasures! Much love and respect! Salute!

An amazing video that really has gravity when talking about legacy and the importance of rap. As much as I've enjoyed omegle bars, they come off as more of a hybrid improv performance that happens to use rap as a vehicle to deliver entertainment. This kind of thematic, culturally relevant content is way more important to hip hop IMO than OB or GB, as talented as those performances can be. Sprinkling in vids like this in with the other content is a real treat.

YAAAASSSSSS!!!!!!! Now THIS WHAT I HAVE BEEN WAITING for the longest time!!!! I've ALWAYS been curious to hear/see HMack on the drums. He has always referenced his passion/experience being a drummer to his ability to ride certain "pockets" and to switch up cadences and flows so seemless and effortlessly.... MUCHO MAHALO for this episode!!!

Mack is a true Pimp. Gets us all fucked up with two Omegle’s and a fire Guerrilla bars, then jabs us with the potent but light dose just to keep us coming around. Until next Friday Mack…. Respect.

Never passive, always innovating. Harry Mack, you are a true Musician, a true artist. Im sure i speak for a lot of people when i say how much i appreciate what you bring to music in general, as we all may love Hip Hop but many of us have other genres of music that interest us too. I was a Bboy, but i also was brought up on classical/musicals/oldies while playing the piano. Then played in the school band, then also played in a Jazz Band. All the while appreciating Rock, House, etc as we moved through the years. So innovating and combining styles and genres just shows that appreciation to music as a whole. Much love to you 👍👏🔥
