This is absolutely on my agenda, it's a way to travel of times past. The way things should be!! People today have seemingly lost a lot of these concepts but its awesome to see this is still possible. I stopped flying because of the horrible tsa junk, tiny plane seats, rude people... I will never fly again. I rather travel in the RV or by train any day!!

I have done it and it is great .I have been to Europe twice in the last 10 years and toured Europe all by train , it is so common in Europe due to Europe being so small . I went to Europe by ship , The Queen Mary 2 from NYC to Southampton, England and back. I then sailed again on The Queen Mary 2 in 2015 , I returned on The Norwegian Escape from Southampton to Miami .The Norwegian Escape was the best of all the ships . The point is I do not need to use a plane.

@@2gunz122 favorite definitely (prior to covid) was meeting people on the train. you would be amazed at how many from Europe come to ride the long run routes and they are SHOCKED at how LARGE this country is. VERY interesting to talk to. As to LEAST I would have to say the general upkeep of the system of Amtrak. SOME cities have very useable train stations then again some of them look like they took over an abandoned greyhound terminal.

Then people such as yourself should buy a car and let others enjoy their own choices?? Have you actually ever traveled by rail? The cost is very inexpensive considering the stress of driving. For those of us who have driven thousands and thousands of miles around this country, rail travel is a unique choice...but not for everyone.

with a car you meet more people and also see the usa in your eyes like never before... I am writing a novel on travel across the states, all the people you meet all the food you eat, and cheap if you want cheap.. we stayed in Arizona last month in the desert.. it was fun took the car and now getting ready to my retirement in euro pass.. for 395.00 I can travel for 60 days all over Europe.. to any country.. all I need is places to stay but you see I booked all my trains at night so I sleep on the seat cars.. and see the countries during the day... I take whatever I want on back pack, leave at trains station or give away when I want to go home.. spend little on clothes when you buy at Walmart cheap... give to soemoen who does not have any when you leave to go home. the way tto go

What is the seat like for coach?
@russbear31
@russbear31 8 жыл бұрын
+david pearson The Amtrak seats in coach are very comfortable. --It's NOT like an airplane seat. They're very wide and you're given plenty of leg room. The seats also recline so you can sleep in them. It's about as comfy as a Lazy Boy recliner. I've taken several long-distance trips on Amtrak on the California Zephyr and the Southwest Chief. More often than not, the train cars are half full unless you're traveling near a major holiday. I frequently have both seats to myself (the window and aisle seat). The divider between the two seats can be raised and both seats together practically become a love seat sofa.

Can you guys tell me why Amtrak can't provide cars with clean windows? Kind of impossible to enjoy the "breathtaking views"(everyone in the business SELLS the view). But the sad fact is that the windows are always filthy. Why? Because once you bought the ticket you're stuck... like it or lump it, sucker.

The Company like Am Trak make it sound so glorious, its NOT!! Its very expensive especially if you travel from Calif to Florida. I did this route the worse experience I have ever done, the rails which is considered the Southern Route is so outdated and bumpy. I took a sleeper car cause I am handicapped and I needed to be on the bottom level. Well when it came to eat dinner They had to come and serve me, and I did pay full top dollar. I can walk and go up the stairs but Not very often. I did manage to get out of my room which is the two times the size of an airline toliets, and the toilets are as that big, so its hard to take a shower in one of those and since I am a big grandma type, its very hard to wipe your hiney in something that small, let alone a shower. I had to get off the pot wipe the hiney and then get back on and flush. its very very small unless you get another sleeper car which is called the Handicaped one. I was supposed to get that one but because of the price, I could not afford to pay 3000.00 for that for 1 full week, which runs 5 days across. The food is ok not the greatest but as a single mom I had no choice, either this or the airlines and I would have to purchase two seats, Im not that big mind you but 210 pounds I was told its big momma... The food for lunch is sandwiches or a hot meal and it can run about 12.00 pp.. and it can add up if you have children, the plan I took was dinner to be paid by them, I usually stock up on foods if I know I am going on a long trip.. so I stock up on crackers and peanut butter for lunch and buy a soft drink can of coke. but they do have drinks for free if you pay for a sleeping car. I did not want to buy the car that was like the previous man one sleeper with a share of the toliets, they can cost about 1000.00 across country but I chose to be left alone. I did this another time with the northern route and liked it till I found the silver meteor southern route which is terrible .. either go Northern route of fly... never again. The cars bump and stops are 11 of them by the time you get to Florida, where my kids pick me up at Sanford Fl... I did take the one to Lawford VA that's a good one 17 hours but they treated you good, the people who take care of you are much better than the ones in calif.. I did take this in Reg car but the person I was with stunk, farted all the time in the room nearly killed me for 7 days.. I left from Nigagra Falls to Seattle, That was a nice trip but make sure you go alone or with your husband if you need to punch him your ok, I could not punch my friend but I did leave her alone in the car that day and night while I paid an additional 500.00 more to be by myself because of what she did for one night. Overall, I think its ok for 1 or two days, but not for 5 days, I did not like it too much.. I do not think I will do this again in Americas.. I did however love the rails in Europe which is called Railbookers. they are dot com after that.. They are not cheap by anymeans too, 12 days still ran me $7000.00 without food and 3 days in each hotel with 2 tours in each city. I went to 4 countries. I managed to see Italy, Spain, France and Switzerland. Wonderful I would do this again with Railbookers, they are under the umbrella of Am Trak, they are fast and lovely.. back pack that way you can reuse your clothes.. I am visiting gk and I took this time sneakers, slippers, jeans 4 shorts 5 pairs of panties and 5 shirts that's It... I can buy new clothes there, in Europe I went with the same things, but I left them all there when I left so I had not had a lot to bring back.. So now you know whats good and whats not.. The food for dinner I Had a filet migon which was good, and lunch crakers and grilled cheese and breakfast was the worse.. Boxed pancakes, French toast and waffles. I could have bought my own and plugged in my microwave and ate inside but we are not allowed to do this, I was told. I tried it,already. any questions message me I will tell you..

On a recent trip to the USA (from Australia), I have to admit my favourite part was catching the train from San Francisco to Chicago. I got to see some amazing scenery, meet some ‘real’ Americans and just generally had a great, relaxing time. It was surprising to talk to Americans who also didn’t realise what a great way the train is to see their country. I also hired a couple of cars to drive in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming and while that was enjoyable, it wasn’t a patch on being on the train. Wake up America and take the train before your government abolishes them. You won’t regret it.

When I took the California Zephyr years ago (Chicago to SF), I remember meeting a number of people from other countries on the train, several from Australia. Glad you enjoyed it! I think people from other countries are more accustomed to train travel and value it more than Americans.

I've taken 5 long distance train trips since 2006 from Arizona. (San Antonio, Charlotte, Chicago, Portland & Seattle) and going to Philadelphia in a few weeks. Primary reason I don't like flying, never will. The train is an adventure. I prefer to see the U.S. not just fly over it. Trains can be late. I've been on one that was 3 hours late. Been on another that ran 4 hours late but arrived only 1 hour late because they can make up time. Actually was on 2 that arrived an hour early so you never can tell. Trains also have to pull over at times to allow freight trains to pass. I also make a point to get a sleeper room for peace and quiet. No matter what happens I just sit back and enjoy the ride, the scenery, etc...that's what it's all about.

Sleeper rooms are so nice. I always get a roomette when I can. It is a pain in the butt to constantly have a freight train pass while we have to get out of the way.

I travel by Amtrak when I travel long distance, my flying days outside of Trans Pacific flights & Trans Atlantic flights are over for good. The train is the civilized way to travel, and the best way to see the country in the daytime, and you can do a lot of reading At night before you go to sleep. When traveling by train, bring a good book, a camera, relax and enjoy the trip.

AMERICAN RAILWAYS ARE VERY EXPENSIVE. I WENT TO AMERICA IN 2015 AND I DECIDED TO EXPLORE AMERICA ON TRAIN. I RESERVE MY BOOKING FROM WASHINGTON TO NEWYORK IN BUSINESS CLASS. TICKET PRICES ARE ALMOST SAME TO AEROPLANE TICKET PRICE AND IT WAS SO LAZY TO REACH AT NEWYORK BECAUSE TRAINS ARE VERY SLOW. HOWEVER, IN THIS JOURNEY I MET WITH SO MANY PEOPLE. WE BOTH SHARE OUR INDIAN AND AMERICAN CULTURE EVERY BODY WAS HAPPY.

m5rule The first- and thus far _only-_ time I rode on Amtrak was in 1994 when I was 12. (For all you millennials, that was juuuuuust before Al Gore invented the Internet, and cell phones were still only a dream in _Star Trek._ ) My parents took me on a 3 week cross-country tour through almost 20 states (though we also drove some of those distances). We had either two 2-person private rooms or one 4-person family rooms during the trip. Though I don't remember too many specific details, I did really enjoy the experience. Here's a few advantages: - train VS _anything_ (except maybe an unpredictable landslide or inattentive engineer) = train wins - leg space a-plenty - you don't have to wear seat belts - you are _encouraged_ to get up and walk about - the air is not intentionally dry to prevent rust on the aluminum frame of the fuselage (thus you are not as nasal-y or sleepy) - you can get three square meals a day in the dedicated dining car - some routes with lounge cars also include a snack bar below (you pay extra for those) - when I rode they had a dedicated smoking room but they have since discontinued those but you can get off the train for a few minutes at _some_ of the stops for some fresh air, - a way more intimate look at the countryside as opposed to the ol' fight of Window Seat VS Aisle Seat @ 30,000ft - you get to know the wait staff and other passengers better than you EVER could on a plane - sleeper cars have small public showers, while _some_ more-elaborate (and thus understandably more-expensive) private rooms have built-in showers - easily wheelchair accessible (though there are no elevators, so I don't know how they'd get you upstairs) - lots more luggage space than a plane, though handbags, overnight bags and toiletries are still kept kinda small The disadvantages: - Yes, you can travel in a cheap single seat overnight, but the seats don't change into beds. If you expect to spend more than one night on the train, get a private room. Since there are no single-occupant rooms ( _SHUT THE __-FUCK-__ UP, YOU LITTLE SNOWFLAKE KEYBOARD WARRIOR MILLENNIAL WHINERS AND DEAL WITH IT!!!_ ), it may/will help your costs if you travel with a buddy to share the expense of a 2-person room. - Passenger Train VS Freight Train = Freight ALWAYS wins. Though they do their best, Amtrak has no possible way of predicting how long they will be delayed by freight trains (which always have priority over passenger service in America specifically). So, before you even set foot on an overnight Amtrak, you should plan your arrivals to ALWAYS arrive hours later than the schedule says when you buy your ticket(s). (So _please don't_ bug them about it; there genuinely isn't anything they can do about it!) - Modern electronic amenities are very limited because Amtrak's fleet is a bit on the -unfashionable- old-and-outdated side (long story there, and frankly I don't know all the details why). WiFi and cell phones are sketchy at best, so save your downloads, calls and text messages for stops at stations; very limited satellite and internet service for the same reason. No DVD/USB players or live TV/radio either. If you wanna bring movies or video games with you, I _strongly_ recommend you download them _before_ you get on the train. Or, y'know, read a book or somethin', I dunno. - No playground or daycare, so _you_ are completely responsible for your kid's entertainment. - There are restrictions on pets, though how they differ from planes I do not know; obviously check beforehand. - There are some horror stories about the public showers (what public shower in a city _doesn't_ have exactly the same issues?), but there are small things you can do like wear sandals and/or bring sanitation wipes. - If you travel with just yourself or one other person, at dining they will always pair you up with another passenger (i.e. always 4 per table); even with dining reservations each night seating is limited so they _have_ to pack you in a bit. (Not sure if this is a "disadvantage" _per se,_ but it is worth mentioning the -first world problems- inconvenience of dining with a complete stranger.) - Not really a disadvantage, but unlike an airplane there is no 'class' seating other than on east-coast commuter runs. As I understand it, individual seating in the passenger cars is first-come (you're paying for passage, _not_ a specifically-reserved seat like on a plane), but the private rooms are always reserved. On the train, all passengers are treated equally with no amenities for higher-paying customers. (It is not unheard of, though, for a _rare_ privately-owned/operated passenger car to be attached to the train, so obviously they will have different amenities from the regular Amtrak cars.) So when boarding at a large station, sometimes they will call for passengers to board based on which seating arrangement(s) they have. - One of the bigger sticking points for many: travel by passenger train is far slower and the train itself is much heavier than a passenger plane, thus the _ticket fares are significantly higher._ In the 21st Century, if you wanna get somewhere fast and cheap, take a plane. But, if you intentionally wanna take your time and enjoy the views an' everything, then it is expected that you will be paying a lot more. And since there is no other nation-wide American passenger train service to compete against, it's reasonable that the prices will also be higher than their European counterparts for traveling the same distance(s). (shrug) What can I say- America just has different priorities when it comes to passenger train travel compared to other countries!

This has the absolute truth about train travel. At 0:40, they say "feel free to move about". Yes, you can do so. Now the downside is that you don't have total balance when the train sways from side to side. So while traveling between 75 to 90 miles an hour, hang onto something to hold yourself up. Now here is the kicker that really gets you to riding the train and it is the absolute truth and what I like bout traveling by rail. At 1:06, get a sandwich and a soda or coffee so you can "eat with the animals" as you go thru the different parts of the country. When traveling by train, you get to see some things that you don't see from a major highway.

Took Amtrak from Chicago to Syracuse then return from Boston to Chicago - stopped at every podunk town - just about the time you were about to go to sleep. No observation car, dining was very poor - the worst of a booth that you could ever experience, seats recline about 4 inches. The worst experience I have ever had travelling - will NEVER use a train again.

Jeff Gerstner+ From Chicago to New York is probably the Lakeshore Limited. My experience with that line is that they had a lot of older cars that weren't the best. But that was several years ago. Maybe they upgraded by now. No observation cars on those. But west from Chicago were the nicer two-level trains with observation cars, in my travels anyway.

You did not say where in GA, but I will assume Atlanta. All I did was go to Amtrak's web page and put in those locations. Here is what you do: California Zephyr on day 1 leave Reno, arrive Chicago day 3. Evening of day 3, depart Chicago on the Capitol Limited. Arrive Washington, DC the afternoon of day 4. Evening of day 4, take the Crescent to Atlanta, arriving 8:13AM on day 5. So it would be a 4 night/5 day trip. I recommend a sleeper and not coach. Good luck.

Just booked my trip from CHI to WASH on a roomette on the Superliner in August. Anyone spent nights in a roomette? Was it cramped? Was the bed ok?
@Woodcut60
@Woodcut60 8 жыл бұрын
Roomettes are wonderful. Cramped? Not when you're traveling by yourself, but a little cramped with two persons. The beds are OK and you can always ask for an extra blanket or pillow. And don't forget you have access to free coffee and juice in the morning and of course the Dining Car with community seating. I've met a lot of nice people during my meals. Have fun and enjoy the ride.

Skip New Jersey? No. Get off the Turnpike and explore. New Jersey is a lovely state, with a lot of historical sites, beaches, interesting things to do. I think a lot of people have misconceptions about New Jersey. But I will say, the rail route across New Jersey is NOT attractive.

Daniel Maydana We aren't rich by any stretch of the imagination yet were able to save up for a couple of years to take the California Zephyr from Reno to Chicago and back. All things considered it was very affordable. We had a bedroom with private bathroom, all meals were included which were well prepared, we got to see the country in a way only possible from a train. We met lots of very nice people and had a wonderful time. Considering how much we would have spent in Gas, Meals, Lodging had we driven (not to mention the exhaustion from such a long drive) I feel it was well worth the scrimping and saving it took to make the trip possible.

The United States has the WORSE rail network ever devised. It's great if you are a ton of raw ore or maybe 50 automobiles. But as a Traveler or Tourist ?? Forget it. You'd be 10X better off with a Rental Car. And for the Prices ? Just BUY a car. For me to travel across country on our rail system (system ?? what a joke) called AMTRAK would cost me about $4000 USDollars and take a week. If I want to go by rail from Little Rock, Arkansas to Memphis, Tennessee - about a 3-hour's drive ? I have to leave at 3:45 AM through Chicago, Illinois, Then to Memphis !! over 24 hours !?!?! What's Up With That? It' because America, the U.S.A. never invested in Rail 100 years ago when the rest of the World now sees it as their major form of personal transport. "Buy A Car" the U.S. pushed. Sure - but no longer. Now we have people who can't afford a loaf of bread and the Wonder U.S.A. is being left behind China and Europe with rail travel. You can cross the entire country of China and Into the European nations quicker than you can travel from Dallas, Texas to Kansas City on rail. Beijing to Berlin in less time from Dallas to Seattle. Amazing. Embarrassing amazing.

sorry you don't understand what rail travel is...it is NOT fast, hurried, crowded...it is relaxing, and you see parts of the country you will never see by flying or driving...and if cost you that much you really don't have a good travel agent....

@PerthTowne

People of all kinds take the train, and you can have some fun conversations if you're open to it. People from other countries and from all over the US--people you would never encounter in your everyday life. I've seen elderly people, kids, and everything in between. The reason to take the train is to see the country that you live in, and to experience it with other people. If you just want get there fast, then the train is not for you. But if you want an interesting experience, it's worth the time.
@oldtwins
@oldtwins 7 жыл бұрын
Mostly old people because they are retired. People who still have to work cannot afford to spend a few days just to do the commuting. Time is money. We only have so many days off in a year and need to spend that time at the actual destination. But when you're retired that all changes.
@PerthTowne
@PerthTowne 7 жыл бұрын
oldtwins Depends on where you're going and how much time you have. If you're taking the train from New York City to Montreal, it's maybe 18 hrs or so. If you have a couple of weeks vacation, that's not bad. Same thing with New York City to Florida or to Chicago. it's like a day's travel. It's really do-able, and some people think it's worth the time. If you're going all the way across the country, that's a different thing. That requires several days each way and might be more difficult if you don't have a lot of vacation time.
