They have such likable character. I like how close a person can get to them and how they strut around with their tail feathers in motion then will stop and briefly spread them like a little turkey. Beautiful bird. I filmed a ruffed grouse on her nest in my area, but the spruce grouse are quite a distance away on the opposite side of the state here in Minnesota. Thanks for sharing your experiences with the spruce grouse. Fun to watch.

Awesome, Bob. I love that you know individual birds all over the place. It's fabulous!

It started years ago with Bruce and Deuce. They spend most of the spring only 50 yards apart, but their personalities are so different. Then I started to notice the same thing in other grouse. Now I visit some of them just to make sure they survived the winter and everything is going well with them.

A guy in Minnesota has some spruce grouse...the male sometimes thinks he is a tree and lands on his head. They indeed are funny. He made a grit station for them too. Thanks

It's my mission in life to tame a spruce grouse, which shouldn't be hard. I just have to pick one that isn't near a trail or other people. They are hilarious.

We don't have Spruce Grouse in western Oregon, but one day in March a wild turkey followed me all day while I was working forest inventory. I went back to find him on opening day of turkey hunt, but he was nowhere to be found. I had grown kind of fond of him, so I wasn't too disappointed. 😏

They're adorable and amusing. There's one over on the coast this fall that was so bold, it sat on people's heads.

Spruce grouse are so cool. Ive seen them in northern Minnesota here and there, pretty rare though in my experience compared to the ruffed grouse. Great video. I enjoy hunting them though I've never taken a spruce grouse. Lovely birds, all the grouse are. Sorta sucks to hunt them in a sense because I just respect and enjoy them so much. The ones that come into the backyard and eat from the berry tree all fall, winter long are considered safe though haha. Amusing to watch them. Love the video and you have a great voice for it and the footage is great too.

There's a spruce grouse over at Schoodic Point in Acadia National Park that has been jumping up on people's heads lately. He is so bold, he seems to believe he's supergrouse.

Where in Lubec? There are a bunch of them around the area. But one trail in particular is known for them. A few years ago, I caught Deuce with a lady. I thought he'd never forgive me.

Highly protected in Maine because they are endangered, and also extremely sociable, and rely off of their camo way too much

Bob, I love your Birding videos! These guys are a favorite of mine, although I have unfortunately never been able to see one! I'm usually only in Maine durring the fall. Are they easier to find in spring when they are courting like this?
@Bob_Duchesne2 жыл бұрын
Yes, they are much easier in the spring when males are on territory and females are nearby. They disperse by mid-June. Still, in good grouse areas, it's possible to simply trip over them, especially in the right places. Then, in late summer, males will often return to their territorial spot just to make sure no rivals are looking to take it over. Let me know where you'll be. I can probably suggest some spots.

@@Bob_Duchesne Thanks for the reply! I usually visit a friend out past Houlton but down east Maine is much closer to me and I've always wanted to explore the area!

I’m thinking of going up late May, are there any refuges or parks in down east Maine you would suggest checking?
@Bob_Duchesne2 жыл бұрын
@@mrmikes21 Yes. I enjoy the Hollingworth Trail at Petit Manan NWR. The Nature Conservancy Trail at Great Wass Island can be good. Boot Head Trail in Lubec remains a hot spot. Just remember that their favorite defense is to freeze in place and watch you walk by. They're sneaky.
