Being born and raised in the St. Louis area. The Hill is one of the last true Italian neighborhoods in America. The documentary did a wonderful job describing both the people who call it home and the wonderful history that is associated with it. The food is as fabulous as the neighborhood and the people. Unfortunately the times have changed for the worse. But thankfully the Hill has not. Thanks for the great story.

I'm a 69-year-old Retired marine. My father was Italian and my mother was half-Italian and half Sicilian. I never knew my grandparents but my mother told me that her mother and dad could hardly talk to each other because of the language different. We lived various places around the metro but I spent my high school years on the hill Going to The old Southwest high school. My mother also used to tell me about her half-brother Lucci, Who was killed in France during World War 2. I obviously never knew him, But while watching The portion of your video of the fallen Italian veterans from that war I finally got to see a picture of him. I was born in St. Louis. We lived in Bridgeton, MO. My family knew an Italian family in the 70's that owned a diner named Tony's. Located at Natural Bridge Rd. and Mckelvey. Fresh Baked bread, full menu. The spaghetti sauce made from scratch and the pasta. Omlettes made with 6 eggs and a splash of pancake batter. In my late 30's I had a house off of Hamton Ave. and Pernod. The deli's and restaurant's in that neighborhood have the best food. I miss it alot. Amighetti's is a must.

My grandmother, Irish immigrant, always kept a big pot of Irish stew on the stove for strangers would come to the back door and ask for something to eat during the depression. She invited them in, gave them a big bowl of stew, bread, milk if she had it. The strangers would offer to do something but she would refuse. That woman was a real Saint.

"Guess the mob still controls the streets there because it's peaceful and quiet." I am quoting a comment below because it represents the depth of ignorance out there amongst NON Italians. People really do believe that Italian culture = the mob and/or violence. Here's a novel concept: Maybe the Hill is a safe area because the people are law-abiding citizens? It's unreal that anyone who watched this documentary and saw the sacrifices which Italian Americans have made, both immigrants and later military heroes, could then mock them.

I grew up on The Hill. My great grandfather immigrated to St Louis in 1914 from Catania Sicily. He too wrote his mother back in Sicily and asked her to find her a bride, and she did, his second cousin actually. They had four kids, my grandmother and her four brothers. They all lived on The Hill. Such a great neighborhood, not quite what it was when I was a kid in the 1970’s and 80’s. Many generations of my family were married in St Ambrose Church, and many in my family still are. My great grandfathers house was passed to my grandmother who passed it down to my dad. It was a place you were raised, went to school, then worked in one of the factories or restaurants. Back in those days no one ever left. But, like everything else, change is inevitable.

Nope, unfortunately not they will never let you buy ....which is truly sad. St. Louis is such a segregated city. It was founded that way in 1764. By the 1800s to.early 1900s the so called leaders of that time specifically outlined areas where people that "looked" like them would be forever ingrained in that specific area generation after generation. The so called leaders put sanctions in placed over 200 years ago that has been the great divide in St. Louis......ie city vs county, different municipalities, who could live where etc......i wish you could leave in the Hill area because thats your desire and/or want but what holds St. Louis back from being a truly progressive great city is the a plus b mindset = no true change in diversity, inclusion or equality.......that part my opinion only......how St. Louis is historical segregated....documented facts

It is a very interesting documentary but broad in coverage. Many diverse subjects are strung loosely together. There is enough material for many separate documentaries.

You can still walk those streets at any time of the day or night and not worry about hoods and thugs. Guess the mob still controls the streets there, because it's peaceful and quiet. I've lived in St. Louis all my life and the Hill has always been the safest neighborhood. Hard to rent a place there, you have to know someone or have family there.

I grew up in the days when wanted to move from the city to 'the country'. When they were in the 'country' they all the city stuff. Then along came the shopping centers. Public transportation did not keep abreast so folks got cars with all the accompanying traffic jams. People said 'they are called parkways cuz that's exactly what's happened. WE'RE PARKED!!!!!! Thanx Robert Moses. You folks in St Louis, on the Hill, God Bless You! Keep it up!

I noticed that some of the residents of the Hill interviewed in this film do not have Italian names. Were their names anglicized or did some marry others who were not Italian?

I saw the film Federal Hill starring Nick Turturro when it first came out in 1994 on vhs. Now I own the dvd and make it a tradition to watch it every year or two. Great film about two Italian-American neighborhood friends. Ciao

Im glad the Mexicans pretty much moved into the Cherokee area and started putting in Mexican restaurants . It was lookin pretty crazy and dark there in the 80's and early 90's. I now feel pretty much safe when I visit shops there. I always hit La Vallesana. God bless them. Some of the finest food in town on the strip !

This conversation had taken a weird turn. What does this have to do with the original insult that all Italian American neighborhoods are infected with violent mob guys?
