I was on a cross country trip, broke down in Gary Indiana at a gas station. I was conscious that Gary was a very dangerous place. However everyone there was very nice to me. One guy actually took me to the parts store and offered his tools to help me fix my truck. For that I paint the town with positivity!

I'm not from the US, but I see that in many "bad" places. 90% of the people in these places are friendly and have nothing to do with the things that give a place a bad name, but if there is a small group of people that systematically cause problems the whole place will have a bad reputation and the concentration of crime will be higher then in other places. The town I grew up in had a "bad" neighbourhood, only because of a small group causing trouble, so over 10.000 people will be judged when they say they are from that neighbourhood just because a group of 100 people.

he was really interesting. he has a way with words too when he saiid "the whole menageries it goes through of enterprises and growth" when talking about how it went from peak to decay was a way to phrase what happened that I don't think anyone else would use. that description gives so much more detail than just saying the jobs left, bec its not as simple as them just leaving it has a root cause. he was def educated in gary back in the days when it was at its peak

Peter I have to tell you that I was born and raised in Gary and lived there for 15 years. I worked at United States Steel Gary Works for 43 years and 8 months and retired on Jan. 1st 2009. I am now 76 years old and have seen many KZbin videos about Gary in the past. I have to tell you this video is by far the best that I have seen. You have just earned a new subscriber and I am looking forward to watching all of your videos, past and future because you are a class act and take the time to talk to the people that live in the cities that you feature in your videos. US Steel Gary works is still booming to this day. The number of workers has at USS has gotten smaller because it takes fewer workers to produce steeel because of the newer modern processes. I drove 35 miles each way to Gary Works every day when I moved out of Gary, and many people do the same. When I hired in USS Gary works there werw 24,000 emoloyees, when I retired in 2009 there wew 6,000 employees,and we made more steel with less workers. The building you went into just outsidr the Gary Works entrance was the old Union Station building, it was featured in the movie "Origional Gangstas" staring Gary's own Fred "The Hammer" Williamson. Keep up the great work. I will be watching!

The reality this country has to face up to is you're dealing with incompatible behaviors and cultures and no amount of the government forcing one group of people onto other or enforcing their equality isn't going to change it. Gary native here. What happened to Gary happened to Detroit, Cleveland, Flint, Ford City, Harvey, and a lot of other cities in the rust belt, and not all of those cities are predominantly black. A lot of predominantly white mining and mill towns suffered the same fate, unfortunately. The manufacturing industry that most of the city's middle working class relied on was heavily outsourced. The white residents who could afford to leave left, and then in the 80's when crack hit; Well, you know the story. My parents are in their 80's and still in Gary in one of the nicer residential sections of the city. There's still a lot of good people there, and I see brighter days ahead for Gary! I appreciate that you actually spoke to people instead of driving thru town at 40mph while bashing us in a voice over like many other videos I've seen on Gary. 🙏🏽Great job! 💖

Yes, Peter does a fantastic job. He reminds me of Geraldo Rivera when he was on 20/20. Peter’s documentaries are every bit as good as Geraldo’s were. Our society, especially in these inner cities though, are in need of an overhaul. It all starts in the home, then with our educators and the motivation of our students to get a good education. Out of control births are another issue that must be addressed. People need to quit cranking out babies they cannot afford to take care of, because it just results in poverty when you can’t afford to raise a child properly. Each child needs two competent parents raising him or her. It’s not going to be fixed any other way. The demographics in these cities just isn’t there anymore. Most of the good citizens moved out. Sad.

I've been to Gary many times. It always had a homely feeling. Just like anywhere else there are bad characters, but you just act normal and don't engage and they don't mess with you.

I'm from Gary and love how you went in being transparent to hearing the natives of Gary. My grandfather owned a construction/masonry company. Employing lots of men from the streets to help build them up and show them a skill so they can always know how to serve, provide, and survive. Because my grandad grew up in the streets of Gary, he took us out in the streets to minister and feed Crack heads, homeless, and others who were poor. My grandad also played a huge role in building a lot of those old structures you were walking in, including the brick houses. His hands made those bricks for a lot of those houses that are still standing. This brought back so many great childhood memories of going to the beach or just hanging out on front porches with my hood friends. Your short documentary truly blessed me today. I hope and pray for a positive mindset and for the right hearts , minds, and hands to help restore Gary's trauma and abuse and my family, who still live there. I moved away over 30 years ago. But still call it home💜

@ambi3nttech He sure was!! His legacy will live on in our family. He bought an apartment building to help folks out who needed a place to live. I'm a business owner/farmer now who have housed many families at our farm who needed a place to live until they got on their feet. By us having gardens and continuously growing and raising food. We were able to feed other families. Just as my grandparents did in Gary from my grand mother's garden and from the butcher who would donate meat to my grandad to feed the homeless folks and street animals/strays.

America is really turning bad, what with all the antiwhitism and woke, antiwhite schools, etc. And there is alcohol everywhere, and tons of drugs. And the country used to be majority white, the way our founding fathers intended. We had laws about who could come here. That all changed with the 1965 Immigration Act. And now with Biden's horrible border situation, we have lost America. Without Westmen (whites) we have no Western civilization! I wouldn't so easily discount the reason other KZbinrs are highlighting the conditions in Philly. It's not always for exploitation but to bring awareness to the reality of the situation. For better or worse, Peter usually doesn't film the stuff that's hard to watch. He does allude to it. The fact is residents of Philadelphia are beyond pissed off about the conditions in Kensington. Many large U.S. cities have similar neighborhoods. They are the neighborhoods where the addicts are steered by the government to engage in their addiction in a seemingly lawless environment. The government permits the lawlessness as long as it remains in certain ghettos. The problem is that some people are just normal law abiding citizens that happen to also reside in these ghettos and have to deal with the anarchy. Much like the situation in Gary, policy is fundamental to the persistent issues that these places face.

Those video brought awareness but also despair like everyone just give up. It gave me the idea that there are no sane people living there.

That bit about the middle class being gone hits hard. My parents were middle class, worked hard and bought a house in their 20's. My dad was able to provide for 4 kids and pay the house off. They always bought cars with cash. I'm almost 30, working full time making well above minimum wage and there's just no way I'll be buying a house anytime soon. All my money goes toward rent and food. There's nothing left to save.

You either have a lot of money and you’re fine, or you really don’t work and the government pays for everything like housing,food and health insurance. If you’re in the middle you’re paying(with taxes) for the people who don’t work all while paying for the high prices of food and rent. Rent has jumped to a level I didn’t think I’d see and really quickly.

Been following Peter for years, 6 years. My first vid that I saw was "American moving to Ukrainian village." The best channel on youtube in regards of travelling content, his amazing ability to connect with people, earning their trust and having them share their story's. I highly suggest when people get a chance to watch everything. One of his most memorable series was when he visited the Schwarzentruber Amish/Mennonites, Alaska, the Jewish in New York city. Los Angeles Chicano and gangs culture, the hoods of NYC, The native tribes of America...too many to name, they're all so incredibly different and exciting. I have not seen a vid that didn't blow me away, he's left a legacy of outstanding documentary's.

Hello Peter; That building that you entered after leaving Gary Works, is the old train station. If you check out old documentaries about Gary, you'll find that it was a beautiful building. It's on the National Register of Historic Places, but nobody has come up with the funding to restore it. It's a real shame, just like City Methodist Church. The cathedral at the beginning of your video. WE take care of nothing in this country. Historic buildings and places should be preserved.

When the money spigot gets PURPOSELY turned off this is what happens. Its controlled demolition/ gentrification until it gets so toxic that what has been done cannot be undone without great amounts of capital..... Its a money equation, it always is. Too expensive to just get by, depression and self medication modalities/sickness take over........ it is the same story wherever you go on this planet. Pollution is super expensive to deal with, most of the time its ”swept under the rug” until the wealthy leave for another place to exploit its the tale of the onceler and the lorax over and over....... At some point the planet will be totally despoiled and even the wealthy will not be able to escape unless they leave this planet......... The bottom of Lake Michigan we call the armpit of the Great Lakes, cancer, autism, autoimmune disorders so many health issues because of how toxic the area is because of the toxic pollution created by heavy industry, it is a dumping ground, a giant dumpster even though there are some beautiful areas there is pollution, microplastic PFAS lead cadmium mercury hexavalent chromium six untreated sewage agriculture runoff Atrazine glyphosate and poisonous water supply from cyannotoxins created by Algae....... Its a toxic mess Peter! Pollution causes major health issues, its cascading effects are tantamount that only the wealthy can escape...for now. I know this because I surf Gary Indiana and witness the pollution first hand, I surf all over the Great Lakes, we have massive problems here that are mostly hidden out of fear of tossing the monopoly game board over, WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED IN GARY, the bankers took the money and went elsewhere, they might come back when price is right, but not likely because of the pollution problem which is very real ever present. Its a fallen world, paradise/heaven is only in the heart.... Hell is visiting more and more places on earth. Pollution (sin) will be mankind's undoing. The building you asked about at your 28:00 minute mark is Gary's Union Station, build in 1910. At one point you were standing on the loading platform area where passengers entered/exited the train cars as you recorded trains speeding past you about 30' away. It was used in several Hollywood productions, most notably Appointment With Danger (1950) starring Alan Ladd, w Jack Webb and Harry Morgan and more recently Original Gangstas (1996) starring Fred Williamson, Jim Brown, Pam Grier, Isabella Sanford, etc.

I’m from the town right next to Gary and I’m so grateful you made this video. Anytime I tell someone I am from the area, they always put a negative spin on it. However, for so many of us, this is home. There is a lot of violence and a lot of loss, but there are also a lot of people with deep love and loyalty to the community.

I worked in Hammond in the 90’s as a glass man when I was in my 20’s brought up in Chicago I learned to be street smart and talk the language. I was called out to repair glass on several occasions in Gary and never felt like I would be harmed at a time I travelled alone never carried a weapon and did carry cash. I would never do that now the times have shifted and not for the better. So sad how the landscape has deteriorated. It was really thriving years ago.

The building on 28:09 U ask for is the Gary Union Station. And is a local historical attraction. Form Wiki : Union Station is a former union railway station in Gary, Indiana. It is located between the elevated lines of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway and Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and is just south of the Indiana Toll Road. Indiana Landmarks has placed the building on its 10 Most Endangered Places in Indiana list. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019. New York Central Railroad's first station in Gary was a simple boxcar, which the railroad delivered to the town in 1906 at the behest of the United States Steel Corporation. The permanent station was built in 1910, just four years after the city was founded.

Peter, as a young man of 71 years and a photographer of over 35 years I have often thought of and even planned at one point to photograph the cities of Detroit and Gary. I graduated from Wayne State University in Detroit and lived south of Campus in the early 70's. I would say hello to the pimps, prostitutes and drug dealers as I walked to and from school. But, I determined I would need someone that is local to help me navigate safely through those places at my age. I am impressed how you handle yourself with so much respect and self assurance. People sense your sincerity and open up to you. You are very nonjudgmental, telling the story by letting those that are living it and knowing it share the true nature of it all. As a Landscape and Architectural Photographer, I allow my camera to tell the story of an area by showing the beauty that often is overlooked. I always say, He is all around us, if we just take the time to see. He has made everything and one can find good in most people and places. May you be abundantly blessed. Hi John! I'm trying to give a little context and insight about how where we are born forms our individual lives and destiny. I'm from the Eastern parts of Hungary, Eastern Europe. I'd give anything I own (including parts of my own body and soul) just for a chance to move to the "worst" places in the United States. You guys have ZERO ideas how lucky y'all have it in life, having the chance to live in a free country and to have the opportunity and financial freedom to move to a better place and live a relatively happy and fruitful life, something that we'll never have the chance of doing so. I said this about your Blueridge Mountain videos and I'm saying it again. You take forgotten people nobody cares about and give them meaning and dignity. My grandparents are from the Appalachian Mtns. My son in law is from Gary Indiana. When he visits his people there, he tells about how bad it is. Life goes in cycles. It just does. Civilizations flourish and falter. People work hard, produce, children get spoiled and lazy. People go bust. Then it starts all over. You do a magnificent job portraying this.

Being from the area, Gary has two realities. There is the daytime reality where most people are up and working, trying to make a dollar. They're usually older and honest people. The problematic people are asleep. Then there is the nighttime reality where it almost can feel like The Purge some nights. The kids caught in the middle, like your church drummer, try to make something of themselves during the day only to go home to sleep to the sound of constant gunshots. I would say you should stay a night there to really experience what these kids and the people of Gary had to build their hard exoskeletons around... but you made a better decision and just left. The life cycle of neighborhoods is just like a lot of cities. I learned in working in real estate that the cycle goes...growth, stability, decline, gentrification. I've seen the neighborhoods in the large city I8 live in go thru these cycles in my lifetime. Neighborhoods that were once glorious, were abandoned during the suburban flight of the 50's, to be considered the ghetto in my youth, to gentrification where the homes are selling for $1 million now. If we pay attention, this life is truly fascinating!

😮 the distinction between youth and old age is a bit of a smokescreen . Many youth haven't got any interest in being open minded to solutions. They are sadly engrossed in their own survival and security, and closed minded to participation in re-evaluating what is REAL Happiness in human Society. And conversely many old folks have brilliant stories that teach, or have a mission they hold dear to their hearts about the way America needs to pick itself up, but their voices are muffled if not silenced by limitations of age or disrespect, neglect and demeaning attitudes. Best is to see the character of individuals not throw us all into a straight & narrow mindset of this or that. That type of thinking is in the same vein as judging by race, by sex, backround birth in a certain nation, or you know it one is human or animal! Cows, plants, bees or bats are all citizens, but we worship cat & dog and slaughter mother cow. Of course if all young people could control their senses and use their higher intelligence, they can all be leaders. The addictions and social bad habits need to be replaced with informed enlightened strength of reason, so we can have sober community and first class republic going forward. 🇺🇲👍🏻♥️🌞

I love your videos! As a polish guy who has never been to America, I have a very limited scope through which I have perceived USA (mostly because most movies/media tends to focus on more easily recognizable communities and areas) and I kinda regarded most of the USA to be... Generic, for lack of a better word (a sort of melting pot with everyone being vaguely of one 'american' culture). But you have opened my eyes to how truly exotic and culturally diverse America can be. To be honest, before watching your videos, I've never really had any desire to travel to the USA, but man, you've really opened my eyes to how many less-known places are there to experience there that are just so distinct and special. I seriously have never seen anyone doing justice documenting those one-of-a-kind communities before. Thank you!

Opened a new plant in Shelbyville, KY. We were eventually bought by a German Co, they started to sell off plants and eventually out of business early 2000. I’ve been to Gary twice. Once for gas and another to drop off my siblings halfway to my parents who lived in Indianapolis at the time. I was surprised how kind the locals were and people were just minding their business carrying on. I was weary at first, but as someone born in a third world country with high crime rates, it really didn’t feel ultra dangerous. It was broad daylight though. I can’t speak for what’s it’s like at night time.

I recently moved 15 minutes from Gary and I’ll say that northwest Indiana is definitely something different. Old world meets new world type deal. I’m 500 yards from a National park, 2 minutes from corn fields, 5 minutes from multi million dollar mansions. It’s a transition zone that’s going to get a lot more interesting as time goes on. They are investing heavily in infrastructure right now with the double tracking of the south shore line which you could see at the end of the video. With the right investments Gary and the entire region could be thriving again in the future

Grew up in a town bordering Gary and now living in Chicago. It is absurd how stigmatized and unknown life in Gary is, even being that close to the city. I’ve been through Gary hundreds of time going to Chicago and the beautiful beaches in and near Gary. The potential is so high in Gary, being 45 minutes from the 3rd largest city in the USA (the 7th largest economy in the world). The city has an existing commuter rail line, harbors, freight lines, and interstates all running right to Gary. The city is also home to Indiana University Northwest with 3,500 students (mostly commuter students from other towns in Northwest Indiana) and another 9,400 students at Purdue University Northwest just 10 minutes to the west in Hammond. The massive housing affordability crisis that the USA is facing makes Gary primed for growth. This is already being seen in other “affordable” nearby towns such as Griffith and Highland, which was just ranked the 6th hottest real estate market in the nation due to the proximity to Chicago and people being priced out of towns such as St. John, Dyer, Munster, and Crown Point. I think the next 10-15 years will be key for Gary’s future as we come out of the current economic slow down and capital gets put back to work.

I'm sure it's getting crazy expensive, I spent half my life in Hebron, Indiana. My mom grew up in Gary and we moved to Hebron from Texas when I was little. Drive me nuts when I'd go explore Gary, in the summer time etc ..all the beautiful buildings...just rotting away

Thank you for doing a thoughtful and considerate documentary on my hometown. I was born in Gary in 1970. The Gary of my youth is gone, but my love for Gary hasn’t changed. I rehabbed my childhood home, which was built in 1952. It took me 5 years. I’m now planning to work on the landscaping. My father founded a church in the Miller projects in 1969 and ministered there until his death in 2012. He taught me to not walk in fear and to not live in fear, so when I visit home, I’m comfortable but cautious. But, I’ve learned to be that way everywhere because crime isn’t unique to Gary. The problem with Gary has been, and always will be, it’s POLITICIANS!!! They use the city for a come up and to line their pockets.

I was born(1972) and lived in Aetna which is just south of Miller. I was about 5 when we moved out but I remember quite a bit about it. Miller Beach, Beach Cafe with the lake perch. Blacks and whites got along in our neighborhood. Then the crime moved in. Our house got robbed twice and poisoned our dog. Aetna is now bombed out and depleted. Our old house on Hamilton Street is a slab and most that are left are drug houses. Too bad. Good memories but I wouldn't live there now.

@@agapereign That's possible. I do know by the late 70s/ early 80s there were quite a few people moving from that area for one reason or another. A couple of my friends after graduating (89/90) rented a house there because it was cheap only stayed a few months because they gor ripped off when they were at work. It's a ghetto now.

Thank you for covering my childhood home! My parent's still live there and love how quiet it is now. Back in the day (i was in elementary) when the steele mill was still operating, Broadway was so active and busy, full of life. But by the time I got to high school (Roosevelt) it was so much more dangerous with gangs, drive by shootings, and overall aggression. But now, with a lot of young adults leaving the city there are so many abandoned homes and nature taking over buildings.

I visited Gary from Ireland back in March 2023. I took a few town planning classes in college and was always interested in the social science side of urbanism. I had read a little bit about Gary prior to visiting. I was staying in Chicago and jumped on the train to Gary one morning. Thought I'd walk around downtown for a few hours and maybe get some lunch somewhere. It was a real eye opener. The state of Gary transit centre was a taste of things to come. The decay of the downtown area resembled something from a zombie movie. You would never think such a place existed in the richest country in the world. There wasn't even anywhere open to get lunch! Hats off to those that try to make a life for themselves in Gary.

Broadway in Gary isn’t the main place to find lunch or anything. Unfortunately Broadway is the first place people go when they come to a city. Gary has good food places beyond Broadway yet if someone is only visiting for a day or less, they would be better looking online for where to eat in Gary. There’s a Chinese restaurant in Gary, numerous restaurants on Lake Street, D and K Salad restaurant on 36th and Broadway, Broadway BBQ on 43 ave that’s been there for years, Flamingos restaurant, Miller pizza, Vibrations, Lo Shells on 13th and Broadway, Little Caesar’s and more.

Love Gary. I'm a truck driver and spend alot of time there. It isn't that bad. Its full of down to earth people, WAY better than the narcissistic people that yiu meet in major cities
