Thank you for bringing up the Milwaukee Road f6’s, very underrated. Actually hit 100mph a couple months before flying Scotsman. Also yes thanks for telling me, the claim does appear to be very shaky and could very well be exaggerated.

Not officially though. That's why Scotsman gets the fame (dynamometer car). And then if you talk about unofficially, we have to then talk about City of Truro. I'm not saying the F6s are bad trains, just explaining why they are 'underrated'.

Given the method to record it was the same that claimed an 1890s 4-4-0 could reach the same speed as a Gresley A4... I have my doubts. To be fair though it is more belivable that 999's claim. Or that of the PRR T1s and S1.

The f6 actually was way better then Scotsman since the engine only hit 100 going downhill and broke down afterwards

Glad to see another episode in this series! I always appreciate it when various engines, even when they're viewed as old, is given some sort of streamlined shrouding to make them look new again. A good example of this is Lackawanna Railroad #988: a 4-4-0 camelback that was streamlined in the 30s.

Thank you for talking abought the MR 10 wheelers, this is a very special locomotive to me as my great great grandfather was a rail fan and had his picture taken next to number 11 in its streamlined form

The "dynamic augment" on the K Class is very interesting for a very obscure reason... The K class was the primary engine reference for the Haunted Train episode of Hey Arnold, telling the ghost story of an engineer who went mad and drove his train off the track, never to be recovered. Hearing that the K class would literally yank its axles up off the rails really caught my attention, because it offers a technical headcanon for exactly HOW the mad engineer got his engine to mysteriously hop the tracks. He simply pushed the engine too far, until one axle didn't land back on the rail and the whole train veered off. It's extremely unlikely that the Hey Arnold staff knew about this dynamic augment phenomenon when writing the episode (I think the story was already conceived before the lead artist picked the reference) but its a very cool coincidence!

A steam era N&W Mechanical Department supervisor told me that the K-1s counter balance problems were known for jerking passenger trains so badly that it caused the passengers to have trouble sleeping. They were used on locals when a K-2 wasn't available.

The one locomotive I love more than any other within forgotten locomotive classes is the Wabash P class Hudsons. They were rebuilt from a failed 3 cylinder Mikado experiment with 70 inch drivers. They worked all across the Wabash system, mostly hauling passenger trains. I always found them to be very fascinating.

The T&P 2-10-4s were the FIRST Texas types ever made from the ground up and as a result, the T&P got to name the Wheel arrangement. T&P 610 is still around and word of mouth is there's a chance she will be restored at some point. And Otto Perry is FAR from underrated. And the D&H 4-8-4s were BASED upon the UP northern which were built over a decade prior to 1944. As a matter of fact 844 was delivered December 25th 1944. Same day as the Battle of the Bulge.

The K-1 and K-3 classes were built in Roanoke. The K-2 s were built by Baldwin and did not have the counterbalance problems. Someone told me that the K-1s set up a jerking motion that made it difficult to sleep in the pullman cars.

To add a add a few more obscure steam locomotives, I would add the Central Vermont T3 2-10-4, and the UP/SP/Baldwin 4-10-2 3 cylinder steam locomotives(this is just my opinion)

Look into the Plant System mail contract race between ACL. Thats a story about American steam going over 100 that predates Flying Scotsman and Mallard.

Ever heard of delaware and lackawanna western railroad 988? Well she was a streamlined 4-4-0 steam locomotive not only she was the worlds only streamlined 4-4-0 but she was also the smallest streamlined mainline tender steam locomotives in the world, yes 988 holds 2 records, unfortunately she was scrapped in 1946, i wish she survived into preservation and was donated to the railroad museum of Pennsylvania

i think the next episode would be a good idea to talk about the Union pacific 2-8-8-0s they are often overshadow by the big boy and challengers and yes union pacific did own 5 former Norfolk western Y3 but did not stay on the UP for very long, there is photo evidence of them in UP liveries

Very informative video. However... the Milwaukee Road 6402 wasn't the first engine in the U.S.A, that title would go to the NYC&HRR 999 which hit a top speed of 112.5 mph in 1893

Please PLEASE, if you do another of these videos, do a segment on the New Haven’s R3a heavy mountains! They had power outputs comparable to northerns and were a rare example of 3 cylinder power on the east coast

You might be wondering wait if the kcs had steam engines are there any preserved and yes there is one kcs steam locomotive still around 0-8-0 1023 she is on display at the heart of the heartlands museum in corona kansas and she is the sole surviving kcs steam locomotive

You make no clear distinction between the K1/2 and the K3 mountains of the N&W. The one with the flaws with heavy rail pounding were only the K3. The others were just good average mountains. K3 never received a light rod and roller bearing treatment.
