To be fair, there's no incentive to prevent a crisis in a Republic, Lawmakers receive no reward for preventing a crisis, because a crisis prevented is a crisis that the public never knows about. And worse if their actions to prevent a crisis are seen as wasteful or unnecessary then they can actually be punished for it or even removed from office. It's very difficult to see how government action affects anything unless it is as a reaction to outside events, preventative action is WAY less visible.

For our British & International friends: over 90% of bills submitted to congressional committees for consideration die in that same committee. Constitutional amendments are exponentially harder to ratify, requiring 2/3rds majority votes in both houses of Congress (or a Convention of the States, but that has never happened in American history), & ratification by 3/4ths of the states. This amendment is statistically overwhelmingly likely to fail.

I’m a christian universalist, but I would agree. I believe in the eventual restoration of all things back to God that are created by Him, done through the Spirit poured out from the Son being a refining fire. However, I don’t see or view demons in their character or personality as really something God made. However they come about, or are formed in some twisted way, is in darkness which is permitted for a while only to ultimately be judged in the end. In the same way as scripture reads how for a christian their former life in Adam dies but as in Christ lives, like an ego-death, the same in effect I would believe also goes for haughty powers and principalities. Well, that's the problem. The existing laws don't give them the ability to stack the deck. Remember, when DC politicians bleat on and on about "Our Democracy" (TM) the "our" does not include legal citizen voters.

A statement you guys made was slightly inaccurate. There have been many amendments PROPOSED in the last 50 years, It is that none have been ratified during that time. Unless mentioned in the amendment text, there is no expiration date for ratifying an amendment. If enough states ratify a 150 year old proposed amendment it still becomes part of the constitution. Part of the reason that no new amendments have been ratified in over 50 years is that an amendment needs to be ratified by 3/4 or more of the state legislatures. That is a total of 38 as 3/4 is 37.5. Some state legislatures like Texas only meet every other year. In other words, the chance that 38 legislatures could ratify the amendment in the weeks between now and the election is so highly improbable that it is bordering on impossible. Most amendments that have been ratified in the 20th century took years to get enough states.

Or a 200-plus-year-old amendment. That's what happened with the 27th: proposed in 1789, finally ratified in 1992. It was more or less forgotten, but resurrected and campaigned for in the 1980s. Many amendments proposed in more recent times have a limited ratification period, though.

1) Politicians do die in office from time to time. There are already processes in place to replace them. 2) It's very complicated to pass a new amendment to the Constitution and can take years. They can't have introduced this with the current election cycle in mind.

This will die in committee, as it should. We already have Constitutional (Article I, Section 2, Clause 4) provisions for filling vacancies in the House. They do not get to choose their own potential replacements, it is left to the Governor of the State they represent to call a special election to fill the vacancy (they are also allowed to temporarily appoint a replacement while awaiting the results of the special election if State law allows it, which most do as far as I am aware). Constitutional amendments are usually only passed in response to some kind of national crisis that has shown itself to be a problem, not preemptively to prevent a possible problem. Also, it's always important to remember that the Federal government cannot actually change the Constitution without support from the States. The process for amending the Constitution is as follows: 1. Congress passes the amendment: A two-thirds vote of both houses of Congress is required to approve the proposed amendment. 2. Notification to the states: The national archivist sends the amendment to the governor of each state. 3. Ratification by the states: Three-fourths of the states must ratify the amendment. Each state legislature votes on the amendment, and the language cannot be changed. 4. Tracking state actions: The Office of the Federal Register at the National Archives keeps track of state actions. Congress can set a time limit for the states to act. There's no way that 38 States are going to give House members authority to choose their own successors (and the Senate certainly wouldn't support it unless they too get the same power). This a power grab by a few members of the House of Representatives that will die in committee, nothing more.

@@nethrelm It's not the same at all. Replacement implies someone that's covering for someone else. Successor is someone that takes over after someone else. The successor would still be based on an election, the replacement is just until the election can take place.

This proposed new amendment to the Constitution must NEVER be implemented! In doing so, the United States would descend to the levels of other countries. As we've seen recently in the UK, for instance, immediately upon a change in power, the newly elected prime minister put into place edicts designed to further infringe on people's rights there. In the case of the US, such an amendment would basically guarantee a 'mass event', an event for which this proposed amendment was specifically designed to deal with. Instead of plunging our Republic into some sort of dystopia, why not just ramp up any and all security for our governing bodies?

Yeah, its a theory called "Rods from God". Physics check out, finances would absolutely bankrupt any military assuming it could even build the orbiting vehicle then haul and load the tungsten rods in space. The thrust required to launch an already loaded vehicle while having the rods retain enough mass to be a significant threat is beyond current propulsion designs. Then, of course, there's multiple treaties preventing deployment of space-borne weaponry. China has demonstrated the ability to destroy satellites with (relatively) precise missile strikes so it's not even a defensible platform. All in all, big nothing burger.
