America - The Last Unicorn (with Lyrics)

The Last Unicorn is a 1982 fantasy film produced by Rankin/Bass for ITC Entertainment and animated by Topcraft. The film is based on the novel of the same name written by Peter S. Beagle, who also wrote the film's screenplay. The Last Unicorn is about a unicorn who, upon learning that she is the last unicorn in the world, goes on a quest to find the others.
The film's music was composed and arranged by Jimmy Webb, with songs performed by the group America. The title track plays while the scenes from the Unicorn Tapestries form a backdrop for the opening credits, and has been covered by Kenny Loggins on his Return to Pooh Corner album. The film's soundtrack that included the musical score as well as the songs was released in Germany by Virgin Records in 1982, but it has not been released in the United States. That second verse is wonderful. I really love the contrast the lyrics set up. The onset of winter and a dying, mournful world set against something beautiful, pure, and immortal. Though it may be easy to think that her laughter is a cruel gesture towards the sad world she inhabits, I think it's an incorrect interpretation. Because the established contrast is so sharp, it becomes safe to say that she's the promise of spring or renewal. How terrible would it be if this symbol and the hope it brings was actually crying? No, it's better that she's laughing because so long as hope remains untainted, death cannot take everything away, and its influence cannot hold its sway for very long.

In my opinion, this song has an interpretation of the unicorn right before the apocalypse. The unicorn is as close as she will ever be to dying, as she only ages with the earth. She sadly watches the world dying, and tries to laugh in spite of her pain, for she will always be alive.The world ends, and she laughs even more, and trots through a path in the clouds. She finally uses her magic to start the world again, but is still sad, because with all the lifetimes she's loved, she knows that once again, In an eternity that seems but a minute to her, she will watch the world die and have to revive it again.

I always wondered, when I was young, why the unicorn would laugh if everything were dying. She's all alone! Why would she laugh? Now I interpret her "laughter" as sort of a desperate cry because everyone she loves is dying and leaving her alone. This is her desperate shout, that the world is still alive, that she is still alive. I'm not talking about the movie; I'm just talking about the lyrics. Duh, in the movie, there are still living creatures around. Although, I think it's sad that in this world, everything is constantly changing. My grandmother passed away yesterday. She also showed me this wonderful cartoon and I always watched it all the time with her. This cartoon was definitely my childhood. I love this song and I love the story that goes with it. The Last Unicorn is a special something that just comments and celebrates fantasy and fairy tales as we know them on such a deep, yet easily understandable level. Everything from people wanting so badly to believe that they would be fooled by Mommy Fortuna's illusions to Captain Cully trying to emulate his hero, Robin Hood, but ending up the complete opposite simply because reality must ensue. Don't even get me started on how applicable Molly Grue's speech to the Unicorn is during their first meeting. Then there's a broken old man who can only find happiness in watching unicorns and the inevitably tragic end of Prince Lir and Lady Amalthea's romance.

+Kronos Dorma It more matches the tone of the film. It tries desperately to sound optimistic, but dips back down into sadness, much like the Unicorn's adventure. She starts out hopeful, desperate to find the others, then learns the treacherous nature of man and the worst of them all, king haggard, has imprisoned all the unicorns for his own amusement. The unicorn in her human form learns about human emotion, love, sadness, desire, only to have it ripped from her in the end. She manages still to save the others, but she is filled with regret and sadness for what has happened to her and the young prince. It's a bittersweet feeling that is accurately captured in this song.

Before Peter S. Beagle wrote the story all the Unicorns were perceived to be male. Look it up. He is on tour with the movie in different places... I saw the movie The Last Unicorn a few days ago and he told us this fact since he was there. :D

As a young kid in Berlin of the 80s we didnt have much to watch on TV except when we were lucky. So, when this masterpiece was aired it was magical. Since then I've been watching this movie and by now got the OST and Bluray. I remember that as a kid I was getting very sad when realizing all this wasn't real, a painful step towards adulthood.
