“Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man...that he didn’t already have” Recall all the things that Tin Man longed for. To be tender, gentle, sentimental...to be emotional, feel devotion, etc. We can all do that. We already have the ability. You don’t need someone to give you a heart. Use the one you have.

My brother, back in the day, "Tin Man" was regularly played on black R&B stations in Chicago. As a teen in the early 70's, we would go to basements sets and bop or step to these soft rock songs. Baby boomers like myself still listed to these classics.

My father always said I had "the gift of gab." So did my teachers. My father meant it as a compliment. He meant that I was articulate and could express myself well. Most of my teachers just meant that I talked too much in class! I guess both were true. But yeah, it's an old expression. In your own way, Jamel, YOU have the gift of gab. You come up with some killer lines in your reactions that make me laugh. That's one of the things I enjoy most about you!

Right now might be a good time to remember such a sentiment. Division is tearing everything apart and a still yet to be dethroned man furiously making every attempt to make sure his constituents, sycophants and enemies alike, perish. So desperately do we need something wonderful like the music from the time when kids cared about what surrounded them.

Seriously though, think about the tin man line. "Oz never did give nothing to the tin man that he didn't already have." The tin man wanted a heart. He already had a heart, which he proved time and again throughout the story. That's actually a pretty deep concept if you think about it.

Seek "America Live at Musikladen", a studio concert they filmed in Germany in 1975, no audience. It was the three of them with Calvin "Fuzzy" Samuelson on bass and William Leacox on drums---and that's it! They played electric/acoustic guitars and various keyboards, piano, organ, mellotron. Tight vocals. Excellent live recording. Their version of "Tin Man" is beautiful. Dewey Bunell is an underrated singer. The bassist didn't play the same engaging line during the chorus, but I don't think they thought that mattered. Listen, it's about a 43-minute performance that is pure organic magic. Reminds you of how valuable Danny Peek was to their songs.

Tin Man has got to be my favorite America song. Like you said, it was so smooth, and the harmonies were spot on. As far as it being so short, keeping it close to 3:00 made it possible to also play the song on AM radio. Back in the day, having FM in your car radio was a luxury

For people of my generation, bands like America formed the soundtrack of our lives at a time when radio and vinyl were the only options (maybe 8 track for some). It was beautiful, and seeing you appreciate it takes me right back to those days when music was everything.

My brothers and I would sing and play this (the middle brother played the acoustic guitar) at nearly every party, cookout, extended family gatherings and holidays. I have a video of us singing it from Christmas Eve, 1988. This song and ELO's "Telephone Line." Thank you for your gift of fresh ears -- even on songs as deeply engraved in my soul as Tin Man, you always teach me something new. BTW: George Martin, the Beatles' producer, produced this album.

"If this is about the tin man in the Wizard of Oz I'm gonna lose my mind". When you said that, I just sat back, smiled, and waited to see it. Now, if you DO want something intentionally like Oz, react to the collaboration between Todrick Hall and Pentatonix called "The Wizard of Ahhs". It's a creative retelling of the story in newer music
