I dont know if you can get this dish in the US, but if its available, go and try it. Its called "Laksa". There are so many version of it like "Asam Laksa" or "Curry Laksa", just try any of it and give us a review :) and lastly, you should definitely try out Durian, its quite famous here when its in season.

I'm Malaysian, let's be honest. LEMAK is not translated as 'rich', but 'fatty' to be precise. No? Yes, it is. It is not referred to, if you eaten something, would make you become fat. But comes from the heavy & thickness of the coconut milk (that is cooked with the rice - 'santan' in Malaysian language). The taste of the 'santan' makes it a bit oily, dense & heavy - which is why the word LEMAK derived of. I don't care much eating Nasi Lemak everyday - just, i need to adjust the portion of the rice so that my face won't get pimples. LOL.
@amieibrhm15276 жыл бұрын
アシュラ渡辺 The santan makes the rice rich with flavors. Lemak means rich with flavors. Yes, lemak also means fat. But in this context, it means rich with santan flavor. Makes it super delicious. You know kuih yang rasa lemak manis, it’s something like that.

5:26 "kaya" = coconut jam basically made like you would a custard in a double-boiler with: 1) eggs (a few more yolks than white) 2) sugar (white/brown/palm) 3) coconut milk with as high cream content as you can get optional: 1) pandanus leaves for fragrance 2) a few almond slivers/sunflower seed for a little crunch 3) a little butter for finishing gloss freshly made, keeps in fridge for 1-2 weeks but it's so delicious it probably won't last that long ;) spread coconut jam liberally on generously buttered fresh/toasted bread

Here's a list of what you can try, @LivingBobby : 1) Mee Kari - curry noodle, there are several varieties, but I like the one with yellow noodles and extra spicy and hot curry 2) Asam Pedas Ikan Pari - stingray cooked in spicy and sour stew, once you've tried a good one, your saliva will leak like a faucet everytime you hear someone say the name or even if you only look at the picture. 3) Roti John - that's like a poor man's subway, but it's very popular and full of flavours. you can usually find it in Ramadhan Bazaars but you can still find it outside of Ramadhan as well 4) Roti Canai - Pronounce it as Rotey Chan-eye. It's an indian bread accompanied with either dhal, curry or both. You can find it in any mamak restaurant. There are the twist-type and the fold-type. The twist type is thicker and fluffier in general, while the fold type is thinner and crispier in general. I personally prefer the fold-type. 5) Ayam Goreng Potong - Literally "cut fried chicken". It's not really special, you can find one at any night market. It does however, taste good. I'd ask for spicy. 6) Kerang rebus - Refers to 'boiled blood cockles'. This is great. I can eat it all day, but don't eat too much if you have any minor allergy to shellfish. Don't freak out when you receive your blood cockles still closed and bloody inside. It's meant to be that way. That's the proper way to cook it. There's not cooked like mussels. 7) Sambal telur - Basically scrambled eggs cooked extra hot and spicy. Once you've had a good one, you'll keep asking for one. Normal scrambled eggs won't do anymore, so much so that you will beg for the recipe so that you can cook it yourself at home. 8) Sambal kuchai - It's basically a modified version of 'sambal telur', but with less eggs and with 80% kuchai leaves. Don't know what they call it in English. Where sambal telur is all soft with the occasional hard onions, sambal kuchai is more chewy and makes great accompaniment to any main meal of rice, noodles, meehoon or kuey teow. That's all I can think of for now. All the best. Enjoy your stay.

4:40 "kopitiam" = coffee shop/stall/house i've seen the actual coffee beans. looks like your normal roasted coffee beans. i reckon the coffee is called "white coffee" only because the coffee has sweetened condensed milk and on occasion also added evaporated milk giving the "white" look. cendol = shaved ice drizzled with palm sugar+green rice drops/noodles+red beans etc. in coconut milk is absolutely fantastic. abc (air batu campur = mixed ice) aka ice kacang (literally "ice nuts") shaved ice drizzled with various syrups+mixed beans+jelly cubes+corn etc. try this yourself at home. at the very basic: drizzle palm sugar syrup+sweetened condensed milk on shaved ice that alone is fantastic or you could add canned mixed beans and corn as well which results in similar to the 2 suggestions above.

Ha! You're doing it right! As in mixing the fried anchovies, roasted peanuts and sambal with the rice. That's how it's done here. The hardboiled eggs are to add a creamy taste while the cucumber slices are mainly to give it a bit of a cooling effect to your tongue in case the sambal is very spicy. It must be freshly sliced though to have that crisp and crunchy taste.

2:02 "nasi lemak" = rich fatty coconut rice essentially rice cooked in coconut milk+slices of ginger+a little salt+a little sugar+most importantly pandanus leaves for unique fragrance. pandanus leaves (possibly regarded as asian version of vanilla) the best versions of nasi lemak will have rice that's nicely separated and not clumpy and have the strongest pandanus fragrance; usually this strong fragrance will be difficult, if not impossible, to achieve outside asia unless you can get fresh pandanus leaves. besides the rice, the chili sambal is equally essential. this "sambal" usually contains onion, anchovies, chilies and other spices and can be either hot&spicy or sweet or all the above. basic composition of nasi lemak: rice+sambal+fried anchovies(if not already in sambal)+fried peanuts+slices of cucumber+egg(traditionally boiled but you do get some with fried) optionally, fancier versions will have meat such as crispy fried chicken, rendang(dry/wet very slow-cooked beef/chicken in fried shredded coconut paste (locally called "kerisik") & spices), seafood(chili squid,prawns,etc), various additional other curries, etc. most, if not all, fancier additional accompaniments will be variations of dishes with chili, dry/wet curry. salivating yet? :)

I don't know if it's authentic Malay but I had Laksa (with coconut milk) and Hainese chicken rice ( I know this is Chinese) I loved it!!! :)

Nasi Lemak is really really really rich in taste. I live in Ipoh, the only place can have the original,unique taste of White coffee. I suggest you all should travel to Ipoh,the city of Perak state in Malaysia and try the hot /cold White Coffee and other foods.

Nasi Lemak is pretty versatile. Actually there are quite a number of different versions of it in Malaysia. The one you had the anchovies are cooked differently. Looks yummy too. Maybe it's a Nyonya version because the Chef is of Nyonya heritage. Nyonya food is known to be awesome. When you do come visit Malaysia one fine day, do try out the Banana Leave Nasi Lemak especially if you can find those that is prepacked into individual packages with oil brown paper on the outside and banana leaf inside and the rice and stuff onto of the banana leaf. It gives you better aroma and taste and open your eyes to how amazing this simple dish could be. Cheap, awesome and fulfilling to your tummy and soul. Just try not to eat it on daily basis ;)

The toast, butter and 'kaya' is actually called "roti kahwin" in many parts of malaysia. And there is also a steamed version.

Come here to Malaysia - your mind will be blown even more than the one you had in this video. There's rendang (either beef or chicken, but personally I love beef more), asam laksa, satay, nasi dagang, pan mee, teh tarik, nasi briyani, teh tarik, roti canai .... so many that I can't put it in here. Then there's Sarawak (East Malaysia) where I am from. We have even more variety of food - kolo mee, Sarawak laksa, assorted kuih, umai, ayam or babi pansuh, lemang, etc. Every state in Malaysia (Sarawak, Sabah, Penang, Kelantan, Malacca etc) has its unique food for you to try at least once. Every food has a story behind it and it's makes the dish even more interesting, besides the taste and texture. Seriously, do come here. You'll be spoilt for choices. Plus you get to see all Malaysians here in its full glory and culture, mingling together as one truly Malaysian.
