This interview was before the glass pyramid at the Louvre, reminds me of Frank Lloyd Wright who did some of his best work at the later years of his life.

Pei articulated his design philosophy very well: the ultimate goal of architecture is not functional but humanity (civil, in his words) . It is unfortunate that no one really understands or believes in him. Just look at the sorry state of landscapes in all major cities around the world. He could not do anything to change it when he was alive. Now he is gone...

It's a mystery why the Louvre shape is a pyramid. Is it just a convenient form, or is it symbolic, as the pyramid has symbolic associations, to the extent that the place was used in a movie about Christ.

Rank is funny, just enjoy the space designed by these brilliant architects.

he is good no doubt about it. but he contradicts his statements by saying that architecture should be a cultural consensus and then proceed to design the louvre museum at those years. The design is good in its own way but i just think it could have been better that address its functionality and culture at the same time - which it lacked.

Pei was hand picked by the Jew Zengendolf to be his architect. he must possess some special ability to deal with the Jews.Who is she ? George Wu, ARCHITECT, A.I.A., NCARB 2019-6-13

Along with Philip Johnson, Pei is one of the most overrated architects in recent memory. I'm reminded of the story of how Pei beat out Lou Kahn for the John F. Kennedy Library project. Pei's New York office was pristine and elegant and Jackie Kennedy loved it and knew he was her man. Of course, in stark contrast, disheveled Lou Kahn worked in a mess of a studio/workshop overflowing with creative debris. Today, Kahn is ranked with Frank Lloyd Wright, Corb, Mies and Aalto as one of the greatest architects of the 20th century while Pei's work marks him as an architect of considerably lower rank. And the Kennedy Library is a horrible building. It sits forlorn, on a wind swept oceanfront site south of Boston. Pei had much to do with the selection of the site; it offered an opportunity for his work to be unsullied by urban context. In truth, it is out of sight and out of mind; one could live in Boston for years without talking note of the Library's existence. Tellingly, Pei would do much the same for the rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, a project for which he was truly ill-suited. Offered an interesting site in Cleveland's old industrial Flats adjacent to downtown Pei rejected this it in favor of another grim, windswept relative nowhere of a site on the shore of Lake Eire and created another pristine, irrelevant monument to geometry.

you are, who? PEI was a better communicator, politician, mingler and PROBLEM SOLVER than Kahn. You'll need those skills dealing with big ass architect projects that involve a lot of the public - the Louvre, Kennedy project, Bank of China Tower. lots of people problems you have to solve before you can even start designing the building. find out why Pei chose the locations he chose. he wasn't paying, he could have built it anywhere he wanted. find out why because the world is not as simple as you fantasise about. just reading a few books on the architect greats don't make you an expert. Yes Kahn is most likely more creative as architect but he's probably not good in teams or dealing with the public. PEI is a more modern type of architect where you have to know about engineering, UX, politics, culture, urban planning, etc. learn son.

@@samsun01 There are a few jews who tried to be on the same level as Wright and Corbusier. but none of them succeeded. Pei, my former boss, is an excellent architect whose achievements showed he was one who was close to the two greats. George Wu, ARCHITCT, A.I.A., NCARB 2019-6-13
