I’m in kentucky with my mom for the moment . We watch this and talk. Such a blessing. She’s 91 and this is what she does. Watches ballers and old musicals all night KZbin. Still sharp mind!! Thanks again for this!!!

I have done this ballet and was the boy in green (actually the boy in blue) and like all of Ashtons ballets the choreography is unbelievably demanding and exhausting. In another cast I did one of the Brown Couples (Junior Soloist at the time) and once again completely dead legs at the end. In saying that I adore his work. He always does what you do not expect to come next. The man was a genius no doubt,

This is a beautifully danced Les Patineurs by the cast at the time of American Ballet Theatre. Fernando Bujones is perfection, born to dance this ballet. The picture quality is challenging at times to watch, faces cannot be made out. Maybe someone will fund digitally remastering dance films, including this one. Thanks for posting.

This is a wonderful realization of Meyerbeer's great score by Frederick Ashton and the ABT. Also nobody's gloves fell off while skating so Adrian Monk can watch this without getting upset.

Although parts are played a bit fast for my taste, this is still excellent overall! Would love to see this in person some day. Or better yet, one of Meyerbeer's operas!

I was thinking Bujones had so much air under him in the entrechat quatres they should have just let him do the huits you know he was capable of. I didn't make as much of a fuss over Barishnikov because ABT already had Bujones and a few others almost as good. What a gorgeous line, and what a technician!

Sir, person who posted this, you're my hero. This is my childhood fantasies and all my dreams come true. We have these real to reel's at home among others, private performances guest appearances, none of which we can seem to find a machine to have them switch to othermedia forms. All I can say is thank you thank you thank you. This is so much of my childhood I needed this right now.

Beautiful music and the dancing fantastic. I remember seeing a similar arrangement on television about 4 years ago and I taped it at that time but sadly deleted it. Many regrets now.

One thing about the marvellous musical score. Meyerbeer's music was arranged and re-orchestrated by Constant Lambert, British composer and director of music of the Vic-Wells Ballet at the time of Ninette de Valois and Frederick Ashton. He wrote much music himself and was the conductor of many first performances including the ballet scores of Sir Arthur Bliss (Checkmate, Miracle in the Gorbals and Adam Zero).

Fernando Bujones . Era un artista de una extraordinaria técnica. un carisma genial y una excelente persona, es una pena que ya no este para brindar su Arte hoy como el Maestro que sin duda hubiera sido.

This was a 1970's broadcast. Back then, whoever recorded it off the air, used the current video ( one inch tape) technology, probably to an average grade media tape. All subsequent copies were digitized but they can never be better than the original. I tried dithering colors, which were over emphasized then, to get better clarity but the clarity is still only as good as the original postings. As soon as soon as we can get a better image copy, yuou can be sure I will post for all of us.

David Coll if you have a way of switching these tapes to anything more updated than real to real "television video" please let me know. I can't number the tapes that we have that we need to find someone who has the correct machinery to switch them. Will probably cost a fortune but it will be so worth it.

My parents have what seems thousands of video tapes like this from TV and from actual performances with smaller ballet companies when stars would show up there. We’ve never managed to get them switched over to anything digital which is really disappointing because I never get to see them anymore. Some of them hold very dear memories for me memories it can never be replaced.
how I can love it so much! I can't stop to listen this piece, it's wonderful :)

This is a truly marvellous performance and it has introduced me to the dancing of Fernando Bojones. I do recommend ballet lovers to take a look at the Royal Ballet DVD. Steve Macrea as the Blue Boy is great and Rupert Pennefather and Sarah Lamb also wonderful. You can spot Liam Scarlett, now an acknowledged choreographer amongst the skaters.

One of the most delightful of all short ballets, but why is the quality so poor? We need a sharper version of this ABT performance.
@karenmix9967 жыл бұрын
Edward245100 i'm sorry sorry you clearly aren't from that generation. If these tapes are still around you're lucky you're getting that quality. And not black-and-white and color photos and snow every two seconds. He is right it's hard to get better quality out of something when the first generation isn't the greatest. Oh before we had all that technology. How did we ever live?
@Edward2451007 жыл бұрын
Karen Mix But I am from that generation. Even so I will no longer bother with inferior videos since there are now so many high quality videos being posted to KZbin on a regular basis. I am as particular about the audio as I am the video. Either get it right or don't post. An inferior video from the past will only be of interest to history buffs, always a very small minority of KZbinrs. Still, it is a surprise to me that someone somewhere does not have a better quality video of this ABT performance of “Les Patineurs.”

anybody knows how many movements does the suite of this ballet have??
@barrymalkin96792 жыл бұрын
The original ballet Meyerbeer composed for his opera "La Prophete" and had four movements. As David Coll noted, Constance Lambert wonderfully reorchestrated it and fleshed it out with additional music of the composer.
@Edward24510013 жыл бұрын
Another version of this ballet has recently been uploaded to KZbin, one by the Royal Ballet. However, I slightly prefer this version by the ABT. We desperately need a better quality version of this ABT performance. Anyone?

This choreography is different from the original that I danced in Cape Town. Staged by Ashton's assistant at the time. Costumes? I love the originals...of course the dancing is fabulous I loved ABT at the time...where I was trained.
