“The originator, never the imitator” The man invented glam rock light years before David Bowie. Thankfully I can say...I am old enough to have seen this broadcast when it was originally aired. I grew up in the best era of music and fortunate enough to have had parents that loved it too.

Absolutely. Little Richard got pretty eccentric in his last years, but I saw a terrific interview from the '80s where he talked a LOT about the barriers he overcame in bringing what he called "race music" to the mainstream. He talked a lot about how uncomfortable the white establishment was with black men performing for white audiences and white girls in particular, and how in a lot of cases it was the executives and manages who insisted he wear his makeup and costumes to appear more effeminate. Whether he later came to like it or not, it's interesting to think about the racist fears of 1950s America as the source of rock's more androgynous stylings in the '70s and even '80s. By the time you had proper 1980s glam rock and hair bands happening, they probably had no idea where it all came from.

The early Beatles high pitched 'wooo' singing was obviously inspired (taken from / stolen from ?) Little Richard, as that band and just about every rock'n'roll fan knows. No music is 100% original, but if the idea goes too far (i.e. 'My Sweet Lord' or I.M.O. 'Stairway to Heaven), then it can be seen as plagiarism and a court date may quickly ensue. It's something which all writers and musicians are well aware of, but equally all of them - black, white and brindle - borrow, lift, call it what you will. Listen to all the 'black' hip hop samplings of 'white' music. Oooohhh... racism ? Nah, just what happens in the music biz.

John Lafferty That is a brilliant comment on the brief history of Rock/Pop Music in the US and most of the western world since about 1955. Everyone has been inspired/sampled by many artists starting with the era of LR, Buddy Holly, Chuck Barry and of course Elvis. In the first decades of modern pop music history, it was White Musicians being influenced by majority Black R&B singers in the US. And now in the past 25-30 years or so, Many Hip-Hop Performers mostly Black Artists being influenced by many Rock and Pop stars who happened to be mostly White Artists. John you make a brilliant analysis. Too bad though in this political partisan society, most Pop/Rock music historians, especially those who have Progressive aka Liberal leanings would only discuss the 1950s era of Black Artists being a victim of racism. That sad period of early Rock history is true. However John, you bring a truthful and excellent comments on that aspect of pop music that most contemporary commentators and historians won’t mention. That is the highly popular aspect of “sampling” in pop music especially in Hip-Hop over the last 25-30 years or so.
@johnnyoranges4 жыл бұрын
@@americangiant1003 Thanks for that. Yes, and I agree with you, esp. in regards to the 'progressive', 'liberal' media. It seems a lot of these folk, despite saying they're against discrimination, always want to highlight and create new divisions among people. Clearly they gain political and economic mileage out of this continuance of the hatred.
@americangiant10034 жыл бұрын
John Lafferty Without turning this off topic into a modern debate on the highly partisan US divide, I am a moderate on most political views. I can’t stand many of the views of the So called Progressive Liberals and also I can’t stand most of the views of the so called Conservative-based Far Alt Right also known as new “American Nationalism” led by Donald Trump either. In relation to this topic, many of the progressive leaning Music Commentators and historians especially the Millennial era born “experts” would only focus on 1 part of history. As a College Grad, that was fortunate enough to take an elective music college class on 20th Century American Music history, the Instructor did an excellent job on being “objective” and honest on the 1950s era Rock Music revolution. Too bad, school kids and college students in America are now often either taught with either the Progressive or Alt Right/Nationalism political view instead of teaching the damn truth such as this groundbreaking era in modern history. Guys I don’t want to turn this into a political argument just a truthful point on how even political views can cloud a honest and objective chat on Little Richard and his impact on the birth of Rock N Roll into a permanent worldwide art form.

One of the great things about rock'n'roll was that it brought people together of no matter what color. Jimi Hendrix clearly didn't care that his Experience, his audience, and much of his contemporaries being white. He was first and foremost a musician, and actually held a major grudge against Mr. Penniman. Little Richard and James Brown, among others, acknowledged that Elvis opened the door for them. And Elvis, when some Texan politician told him to "leave his black girl singers at home", had a great response. He made a point of having the Sweet Inspirations driven round the arena with himself and the racist politician. And I saw that story from the Sweet Inspirations themselves.

The true architect of Rock & Roll was Bill Haley and his Comets. Their first record was Rock the Joint in 1951, then Crazy Man Crazy in 1953 and then Rock Around the Clock was recorded in 1954. Chuck Berry hit the charts in August of 1955 with Maybellene, Carl Perkins recorded Blue Suede Shoes in December of 1955 and then Little Richard released Tutti Fruitti in late January 1956. Then Elvis hit the charts in early March of 1956 with Heartbreak Hotel. Little Richard was great, but Bill Haley is the one who really started the ball rolling.
