I think the biggest problem with foreigners speaking Chinese is that they always drop the intonations, presumably due to the fact that intonations are not very emphasized in their own languages. It takes time, effort, practice, and a very keen ear to distinguish the subtle phonemes as well as the ascending and descending intonations of the voice. On top of that, there are so many dialects in China, many of which are mutually unintelligible. What I mean is, a person speaking in the Shanghai dialect can barely understand a person speaking in the Wuhan dialect, though I confess that the Wuhan dialect may be closest to the Beijing dialect or standard Mandarin.

That was very informative! Thank you for posting that.
@shaolin8910 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with you about the tones.. Check my video on my channel, I emphasize speaking fluently with standard intonation.
@kiwifruitkl10 жыл бұрын
Frederik Rasmussen I must add that sometimes Chinese people can't speak standard Mandarin Chinese fluently, but rather their voices may sound accented. Examples include the Shanghai people speaking the Shanghai topolect. I admit my own bias in my previous post about the fact that Wuhan language is closer to Mandarin than Shanghai, but that's only because my parents both speak Wuhanese, while their standard Mandarin may be a bit accented. To find an English equivalent, it's like a person in England speaking the King's English. The King's English is standard and proper. Now, English is a Germanic language. So, imagine that Germany and England are one country, and "Germanic" is considered one language. Then, German and English would be, in this hypothetical scenario, be considered "dialects" of "Germanic languages".

Many Chinese (from outside of Beijing ofcouse) have told me that Harbin probably has the most truly standard pronunciation of Mandarin. I've know a few from Harbin and I have to say, their Mandarin 'is' indeed very clear and beautiful sounding. More so than Beijing imo. Of course, you don't want to tell a Beijinger that ;-)

I'm not black (I'm half white and half hispanic) but I get the same thing. I don't understand why it's "normal/okay" for me to study some European language, but the second I want to learn an Asian language (I'm studying Korean) people think I want to be Asian. So when I study German, I'm just wanting to learn the language, but when I study Korean, I'm an Asian wannabe? :/ Anyway, good luck with studying Japanese! ^^ That's another language I would like to learn sometime. :3

you dont see many people learning the language period, but people are always so overly shocked when that persons black. i am also learning mandarin + Japanese and i think the proportions are equal. u dont see as many black people bc there arent many in general. if you have just 1other blk person in ur class of 10 then thats 20% which is about right considering our % in the US. maybe u should look harder?~ b/c i know a bunch of blk ppl learning chinese......

Is this the same Andrew who used to be a concert promoter in Shanghai? If so, I met him once, he seems to have parlayed his Chinese abilities into a mini-career. If I recall correctly, he used to promote events at Pegasus. Oh, and thanks for bringing Ice-T to Shanghai in 2005, that was a great concert. There are actually tons of foreigners who speak really good Chinese, but they don't get noticed because they're Asians - Koreans, Indonesians, etc. Still though, his Chinese is solid! jia you!

@BLAKPEARL69 you still can. most people who speak a dialect also know Mandarin. its the "standard' Chinese dialect, known as putonghua, because that's what people speak in the capital city. its what most foreigners learn when they study Chinese.

This is correct! My parents live in China now, my father being white and my mother being half black/filipina and when they are out together, she gets the utmost respect. They are infatuated with white people. My father always gets special treatment (though they always try to raise prices when he's near) While my mother is treated as if she can't afford anything and people are rude and short with her. :s

@earthtojanson I did MY research. Japanese isn't related to chinese at all. There are a ew phrases, but Japanse came from Korean and Mongolian. I have been to all three countries, and there is more similiarity between English and Korean than Japanese and Chinese. Use rel sourcs, not wikipedia. I can go on Wikipedia now and rewrite history.
