America's public spaces in cities and suburbs have been lacking for a long time - they're unengaging, anti-social, and inaccessible. How can someone who needs to use public transit or walk access these places if there's a five lane highway in the way? Why isn't there anywhere to sit and talk to your friends? And how come every activity in the suburbs cost money to use? Urban planning has to address our public space crisis. Our lack of public spaces in cities and the suburbs have made placemaking so important for our future. We need places where people can hang out, socialize, and grow. We need more libraries, public parks, public plazas, car-free zones. We need better urban design, better transportation engineering, more public transit access to public spaces, and more walkability and sociability. It's imperative for our mental health, physical health, social cohesion and political future. Urban planners and civil engineers need to make this happen.
