The HMS Victory would probably not fare well since the CSS Texas was steam powered, armored and capable of ramming. However, there were iron hulled, ocean going "blue water" ships of the 1860s like HMS Warrior and USS New Ironsides that could outfight shallow water and coastal rams like CSS Texas, Memphis, Atlanta and numerous other rams that were not designed for the high seas.
@themanformerlyknownascomme777
@themanformerlyknownascomme777 3 жыл бұрын
funfact, the Confederacy ordered multiple "blue water" ironclads, but thanks to aggressive US Foreign Policy, the vessels never got to see service with the confederates. Most well known examples are CSS North Carolina and CSS Mississipi whom if they had arrived, would have completely overwhelmed any and all vessels in the US Navy. However, they were impounded and adopted by the Royal Navy as HMS Scorpion and HMS Wivern.

The ironic thing is these ships were brilliant because enemy fire bounced off and they could ram wooden ships. However there was a slight problem when the enemy had on, battles could rage for hours and sometimes both ships would retreat with minimal damage.
@Shadowkey392
@Shadowkey392 3 жыл бұрын
Enemy fire didn't bounce off. That only happened up until they realized that they could do more damage by loading their guns with their maximum-rated charges instead of the lesser charges they were using.
@na3044

Virginia used shells almost exclusively though, since she expected top fight wooden warships. There were plenty guns already around that could penetrate ironclad armor at the time of Hamptonm Roads. Ever since Rodmans casting innovations the bigger guns on both sides, Brookes and Parrot Rifles and Rodmans Monsterguns (the 20-inch was just a marvellous thing)... the shells of Virginia already spanged riverts of Monitors armor and dented it... had she used solid shot... but on the other hand the same holds true: before Rodmans mettalurgic studies of gun casting they tended to suffer from unequal cooling and weakened steel, frequently bursting and requiring cauteous powder charges, Monitor supposedly used reduces powder-charges... but her 11" Dahlgren Smoothbores were modern casts. That's another thing there, Monitor used bigger-caliber smoothbores (said 11" Dahlgrens) whereas CSS Virginia had Brooke Rifles for half her armament, albeit at 7" a smaller caliber. Both sides had guns that with a good chance could penetrate armor, though these were pretty expensive and rare. Still, the scene where the bog shore-gun pens the armor is pretty realistic. Forts were often equipped with stuff like that. A big columbiad or Parrot Rifle was an expensive thing.

I saw iron clad being filmed at Hawley lake back in 2004 I used to live behind Hawley woods we found out something was going on and being filmed so we decided to go up and see it it was all dark and I saw ironclad on Hawley lake and smoke being fired at it and floodlights everywhere and some kind of artificial shrubs blocking lake to create scenery I ended up running and tripping up on something and had to go home but it was amazing to see it.

Not sure if it used coal or wood for fuel. Either way they would have had to use currants allot but I do agree,making it to Africa would be hard at best. The Texas class could run up to ten knots a better design then the Merrimack. It could run a blockade and once past Monitor types it may well have gone up coast as wooden ships were no match for them, Monitors were not sea worthy and could not pursue
@Karagianis
@Karagianis 11 жыл бұрын
There is no way you could run a blockade in an Ironclad, they were the slowest ships in the world. There's also no way you could have ever sailed one across the Atlantic ocean, even if you filled every space inside it with coal it'd still have run out! Typical Clive Cussler plot in other words! LOL

@Cladenny true true. But considering a heavy first rate has 120 guns and about 500x times the ammunition supply of an iron clad this would be a true test of steel plate durability. i mean sure a single plate or armor can deflect 1 or 2 shots wihtout leaving a dent, but how would it handle a dozen cannoballs simultaneously bearing down on it again and again and again?
@themanformerlyknownascomme777
@themanformerlyknownascomme777 3 жыл бұрын
there was a "ship of the line" that stood up against Ironclads and survived, SMS Kaiser of the Austrian Navy, ironically after the battle she herself was made into an ironclad.
@spikespa5208
@spikespa5208 3 жыл бұрын
nairda55555 You assume the fire from the ship of the line would be so accurate at any appreciable distance. Might not have the time to hit the same place over and over. During that fight the ironclad will be chewing up the ship of the line with explosive shell fire with fires being started all over the ship. Either be ripped to pieces or burned down (unless the magazine goes). And if there's no wind? Fore and aft raking fire would do it in pretty quick.

@erwin669
@erwin669 3 жыл бұрын
No Confederate ironclad ever ran the blockade as none of them had the range to make it out to sea. The Confederates had about 30 ironclads built during the war, the issue was that their engines tended to be underpowered for their weight. The largest Confederate ironclad CSS Tennessee was built in 1864 and fought at the Battle of Mobile Bay (she was commanded by the Merrimack's commander and was forced to surrender after her rudder chains were broken). The National Civil War Naval Museum at Columbus, GA has the hull of the CSS Jackson on display

Exploding shells, basically big iron cherry bombs filled with gunpowder. They've got a fuse that's lit when you fire them from a cannon that's got an adjustable burn time so it will, theoretically, explode once it's travelled a certain distance. In the heat of battle, you had to guess at the range, since there wasn't time to really measure it, hence why there are a lot of shells that are exploding early and late. They also had a nasty habit of exploding inside the guns, so all in all, they weren't the best things in the world. The French came up with them in the age of sail, I believe those were called Paixhans guns.

Doesnt seem like a great ball to use when your trying to take out an ironclad.
@Shipwright1918
@Shipwright1918 8 жыл бұрын
Well, ordinary cannonballs just bounce off the sloped sides of an ironclad. They do leave a big dent when they do this, but it would take repeated hammering of the same spot to actually punch a hole in the side, which wasn't always doable. In theory, if you could get the exploding shell to blow up just as it touched the side of the ship, the explosion coupled with the impact would blow a hole in the side of the ship with one or two direct hits, but as I mentioned earlier, it was difficult to get them to blow up just when you wanted them to because there really wasn't time to take the range perfectly and get the right amount of powder in the fuses to make them blow up X amount of seconds later, they had to be prepped and fired on the fly, essentially guessing, in the heat of battle. The same basic idea is behind the shells on the battleships which are the direct descendants of the ironclads, except that battleship shells explode on contact instead of by time delay, and there was dedicated range-finding equipment and electro-mechanical computers to do all the necessary calculations and aim and elevate the guns.
@o3941
@o3941 7 жыл бұрын
Shipwright1918 You're not wrong on modern (WWII modern, that is) battleship shells having a contact fuse, but the contact fuse would arm a delay fuse that was often no more than half a second.

I am a Texan and I like this scene, very well made. Though not true to history my assumption is that the captain was smart going silent given the cargo and mission (and noticed that the union was using incendiary cannon rounds and shooting low). Also they could drift out silently of union blockades. Once out and clear, they could restart engines and go where ordered. But I assume they could not restart the boilers or possible damage later and was at the mercy of the sea.
