Kapa Haka is the collection of songs and dance vs the Haka the world sees. Kapa haka is the intrinsic link we have to our ancestors, genealogy and culture. Kapa Haka encompasses sets/ brackets that usually have an entrance song, a choral song, a chant, an action song, a poi - usually flirtatous, a haka and an exit song. There are competitions at school level, adults, within our tribal regions and nationally to represent those regions. The brackets can talk about issues of the time, political or otherwise or to acknowledge history. Maori is an official language of our Country and we have total immersion language schools from preschool, to High School and we also have Maori based Universities in mainstream curriculum.❤️

Ae, waiata a ringa (action song) = usually happy and upbeat. Waiata tira (choral song) = upbeat or sad with love energy. Moteatea = usually sad telling a story of an incident or just a song made to mantain knowledge. Haka = Anger I guess. Poi = flirtatious. These are our kids - high school students. They're at adult calibre now. Our kids are brought up with their culture, especially this kapa group. If you can feel the items they sing and dance, then they're giving it justice. A lot of our songs portray today and past events, tell our stories of our ancestors.

NZ is rich with culture and not just our own, its interesting to hear in your schools that other cultures aren't taught? My daughter (11) just this week celebrated Diwali.. The whole school came together and celebrated as one.. Off the top of my head her school has also celebrated Chinese new year, Maori language week, Samoan language week, Matariki (Maori New year) and so many more...

@9.09 .They sing in mourning to a very well known beautiful woman from their tribe who passed also one of tgeir elders, they ask that their spirits return to them her/his family who are left behind and lament their absence, they say in sweetness, that although his/ her body had left from sight that ther spirits, her beauty thier bloodline remains with them her many children, it us an an ode, they rejoice that she has joined her many ancestors that sit on the pae o tihi (heavens bench) they wait for her, as they wait for us all. They hear us she hears us. It is a beautiful tribute.

The two you are asking about that are dressed in our cultures ( korowai )” dresscode from different areas of the country but they are the leaders of their group which have been hand picked from there tutors who teach them songs, choreography and dresscode … hope this helps this is all taught and learnt over a matter of weeks and months. And what your definitely feeling is the( wairua) which is the spirit the everything around us ❤️❤️❤️

The spear like weapon used in this haka is called a taiaha, it was never ever thrown by warriors and chiefs of war armys because it was seen as sacred, it was fought hand to hand in a fast battle which could only be fought by warriors trained to have fast reflexes which was basically every Māori man except the slaves of tribes, there are hardly any videos of taiaha fighting because it is seen as scared but in real life it is so crazy, like the matrix agents fighting type shit but I thought I just mention that every weapon was fought in hand to hand combat except one which was called the koikoi

Wow, a comment for a year ago 🤣 I ended up in the streets a couple years before this and sort of disconnected a bit from my people. It's shown in the comment by the way I'm speaking. Luckily my Grandfather called me back to retrace his footsteps to get to the point of leading my people as I held the ending of the half stories specific people held and the knowledge to be passed down again in the never ending chain from the dawn of mans creation. I was around alot of gangs and drugs but being raised by my Grandfather, i never became heartless and always thought about things, like when people of my grouos whre robbing id think about how the people worked for that stuff, etc. Without our traditions, without ny Grandfather I would still be there. I still greet them ofc as I know of duality. But I don't put myself in the same situations. All of us in my great family and all those who knew my Grandfather described him as Love.

We have a very special culture (Maori), and they are wearing what we would consider our ceremonial dress, or Kakahu. Kapahaka competitions began in the 1970's and were a form of protest for our people against the things our government were putting us through and also served as a way to bring our people together to spread word to the rest of the country about issues that would arise. Our people are an oral people and through our language, songs and haka we keep our history and traditions alive. Today Kapahaka still lives on strong and it still serves a place to bring our people together in both celebration and in grievance ❤

All I know about kapa haka is some of the origins like kapa haka was created to connect to gods and to dance and entertain and the other side of kapa haka was created a lot later when a war broke out when settlers came to nz trying to claim the land and Māoris attacked the settlers come back with muskets and that’s where a war breaks out and since the Māoris are at a clear disadvantage since they only had spears they would use hakas to scare their enemies by hitting themselves with their weapons on the head and now kapa haka is used to connect to our gods our roots and our ancestors

Kapa Haka is in most mainstream schools here in New Zealand. Which is fantastic for keeping our Whakapapa ( ancestry ) alive throughout the generations. My mokopuna ( grandchildren ) absolutely love it.

Atamarie Kōrua (morning to both of you), I am Māori indigenous to Aotearoa (Land of the white long cloud) New Zealand. Reasoning behind the different male and female dressed in the kakahu korowai (clothing wrap), so everyone including the roopu (group), know who are the leaders. They are called Kaia. The males have a Kaia, and the females have one also. They keep structure and leadership within the roopu. Love your aroha (love) for our culture. Māori are the most ataahua (beutiful) songbirds of Aotearoa, but then can be quiet fierce in battle when they are trying to protect, agreeing and let you know how that particular Iwi (region) rolls 😇

The black cloak and the brown cloak that only one male and female are wearing is called a 'Korowai'. They used this as a way to differentiate them from the entire group because they are the kaitātaki Tāne and Wahine, the male and female leader of the group. There are many different ways that rōpu/groups use to show who's the leaders, I've seen some groups use different hair accessories, or a different piupiu, which is the skirt like garment that they're wearing.

Wairua I’ve learnt after many years, is almost the same as Energy. Not the same because Wairua, spirit of Man, Holy Spirit, thou art welcome here, resides in man, Energy is sent out from the Spirit of the person. It’s not physical, like a smile, it’s the sense you feel.
