This is the shortest intro PBS has ever made for American Experience, and yet it was the intro that brought me to happy tears the fastest. Every intro previously gives you a slow immersion into all the intense history of this nation; building up the pride and expanding just like the country did in its infancy. The current intro just dove right into everything, and still managed to allow you to take it all in, but the music was so powerful that it got me grabbing tissues at the 0:30 mark!! Just beautiful. I will always love this series.

This is beautiful opening. Kind of reminiscent of "Simple Gifts". I love the shot of Grant and Lee facing each other.

This is my favorite American Experience opening. I like the older one too, but I think this one does a better job of mixing the audio and the visual.

To the comment by lacouerfairy, that's exactly correct. The first few notes are borrowed from Simple Gifts, which you can hear in Variations on A Shaker Melody from "Appalachian Spring" by Aaron Copland. That's how great composers catch our attention - they borrow from songs that are already catalogued in our mind as pleasing. Irving Berlin was the master of it. The last three notes of this American Experience theme are the last three notes of My Country 'Tis of Thee. There are many other examples of borrowed notes in between the first part and last part of this AE theme.

Does anyone know the identity of the woman in the middle of the picture at 0:37 with the what appears to be a picture campaign button on her dress?

Nevermind, it's Joel Goodman. The whole thing is an original score. You can listen to it on SoundCloud.
