Pigeons used to be kept in lofts by people who bred and trained them. Some were bred to be racers, others were bred for aesthetics, and some were even bred to be plumper and tastier (pigeon meat is known as 'squab' and is still considered a delicacy in many parts of the world). It's only in the past 80ish or so years that pigeons have been seen as vermin.
