Ah, the Feuerzangenbowle....I grew up with an aunt from Germany who brought that tradition here. She had a big copper pot that sat on a stand, which she filled with red wine and fruit on the bottom. The literal translation--fire tongs bowl--references the tong that sits on top of the pot and holds that sugar cone. We had huge sugar cones imported from Germany. The rum was poured over it and lit on fire. It took quite some time to melt the whole thing. I've never actually seen it done in miniature like that which you had. That was very cute. I love those memories. We were too young to drink the wine, of course, but we did get some of the fruit. It was yummy but strong. Lol. I've gone so far as to make one of my homemade hand sanitizers a Feuerzangenbowle scent. It's very strong, too. 😋
@Psi-Storm
@Psi-Storm 5 жыл бұрын
There is also a german cult movie called "Feuerzangenbowle" from 1944. It's about a teacher who gets dared from his friends to go back to school as a pupil. It's really popular in the big college citys. It's shown end of every year. Students mix their Feuerzangenbowle before hand, then take it with them watching the movie in the bigest lecture hall. Afterwards many bars also serve the drink that night. Quite a special day in college life over here.

Greetings from Hannover, the medieval part is my favourite thing! Especially hot mead, I highly recommend to check some of the different flavours out! And cudos for drinking that horn and staying upright, I manage to drink one and get a bit tipsy for around 15 minutes, but I've seen quite a few people not being able to handle such an amount. Problem is not the alcohol, but the sugar from the honey. The alcohol goes straight into your blood and gets you drunk within minutes if you are not used to it, and it's even worse when it's hot. Also Schmalzkuchen is great, since I was a child I am able to find the huts selling it on a christmas market by scent from around 100 metres distance. xD

At around 6:18 you where at the Beerenweine booth. When you buy some of them for at least 20€ you'll get a special coin, a Beerenweintaler. And when you collect 50 of them (in other words boozed up for 1000€ or more) you'll get a Beerenweine Knighthood and a sword.

My favorites at the christmas market are very classic bratwurst and mulled wine (although I'm of the same opinion as Phil and would immediately exchange the mulled wine for beer)! Visit the Christmas market in Erfurt, the atmosphere with the giant cathedral in the background is unbelievable! Of course even better in the twilight!

I was in Germany and Belgium this month and went to the Christmas markets in Koln, Bonn and Dusseldorf in Germany and to the Christmas markets in Bruges, Ghent and Brussels. I just got back a couple of days ago. I love gluhwein and the Krackhauer!!!!!! I also had something new this trip to germany....I think it is called Egg punch? It was good but strong.

I'm sorry, I just gotta tell you that seeing people spell Düsseldorf as Dusseldorf bc they don't have the ü on their keyboard makes me giggle bc "Dussel" is a mild insult comparable to "dummy", which makes Dusseldorf "Dummyville" xD

Hey, Phil.. Deana was getting pretty LIT with the wine. We have a big Wurstfest here in Texas, but not as cool as there. Was at a Xmas festival in Kempten a while ago, the spiced wine was wonderful. Mid-December, It was super cold I remember, gloves, hat, coat, scarf..most was OK, but my toes were freezing, just had dress shoes on.☃️❄ Thanks, video was great!!

1 more fun fact: Since you paid "Pfand" (deposit) for your mug of Glühwein, you can literally just wander off with it. Like the cup? Keep it... Need a "road Glühwein" zu get you home? Just take it and you'll have a memory in the form of the cup on top of it! - Many Glühwein Stands try to make use of that fun phenomenon by designing nice/memorable cups that entice people to nick them, so they earn more by selling the cups on top of the Glühwein... The heart-shaped cups toward the end of the video are a great example of that!

Next time try the 'Reibekuchen' (fried onions patato mix) with apfelmus. En for your sweet tooth: 'nurnberger obstler lebkuchen'. My alltime favorite since I was a child. At Christmas time my grandma always sended us a large tin box with different lebkuchen from Nurnberg.
