American Girl Close Up: See Our ENTIRE Grace Thomas Collection!!

I once asked viewers if they'd be interested in videos where I focus on all the items we have from a specific doll's collection, and the answer was an overwhelming YES! We have a few dolls where I feel we have enough of their collection to warrant a video. grace is such a nostalgic girl of the year for me. she was the first goty to be released when i had just started actively keeping up with american girl and i remember watching all the “going to the ag store for grace’s release” and “opening graces entire collection” videos when she had just been released. i wanted her and her collection so bad but my family couldn’t afford it at the time and according to my mom “i already had an american girl doll so i didn’t need another” lol. watching this video made me feel like it was january 2015 again. i really wish ag would put the gotys name on their collection again too, it felt more special that way.

Aw, I'm glad I unlocked some nostalgia! I think a lot of us are in the same boat about the GOTY's personalized clothing tags. Can we convince AG to bring that back?

I thought I had a lot of Graces items (minus the bakery, pastry cart and bistro set), but you have things I d never seen! That girls case is new to me and why did I never know that Grace had a hair set? Grace was the last GOTY that my daughter cared about. She was all into the French baking aspect. We did a girls baking class at Williams and Sonoma even. She has the girls sized messenger bag that is white with the black polka dots. My daughter loves France and speaking French. She is duel majoring i. pre-med and French. I’m sure that she’d deny a connection, but Grace might have sparked an interest in it. I took my Grace to Paris with us when we went in 2018. It was my first time taking a doll abroad but so worth it.

(My) Grace mentioned that that (doll) Grace's collection had a kid-sized white polka dotted bag to match hers. Love that! And I love that your Grace has been to Paris with you and possibly sparked her francophile trajectory.

I do not have any of this collection but I did have a new Grace…I gave her to a friend’s little girl from Santa…her daughter looked exactly like Grace. She has made this young lady very happy!

The extra shirt with her dog on it was an in store exclusive that was part of the Grace themed party package. I think the chef hat came with it.

The blue travel coat extra buttons are to show that it is a double-breasted coat style. You can tell by the overlap of fabric on the inside. A simple way to remember which accessories came with which doll would be to take a picture with a card with the dolls name & all the accessories. Then you can store them wherever you want, but you'll always have a record of their origin.

Yeah - I guess I would have to look at double-breasted coats for actual humans lol. And yes - that would work to keep the dolls collections straight. There is an American Girl wiki that houses all that information. It IS nice, though, that a few of these dolls, actually make it even easier with the personalized tags.

Grace has one of my all time favorite collections! I still use her clothes and accessories on the daily. The one outfit I didn’t get was the baking outfit - didn’t think I’d use it much. But that apron dress is so stinking cute! It may be a Mercari purchase someday. Did you know there were several extra outfits technically not part of her collection but that used her fabric? There was a store exclusive promo dress made out of the black apron fabric. I love that one. A black holiday PWP dress that used her tweed shorts fabric. A free Rewards gift that used the same tweed as a skirt.

Grace is the last goty I want but don’t have. I kept trying to tell myself I didn’t need her, but she’s so pretty that I finally gave in and put her on the wishlist. The next doll I really want is 26 but after that maybe it’ll be Grace! I haven’t read any of her books but I did watch the movie and didn’t like it- though I know I’m not the target audience, lol.

What I don't understand - and I say this fresh off of seeing the Corinne movie - is why AG objects so vehemently to following their own story lines when they do movies. It's not like they're being pressed to condense an 800 page novel into a 90 minute movie. They just seem to like to wildly deviate from the stories they write and I think it essentially never works in their favor.

I finally got to sit down long enough to enjoy this full video.. and WOOOOOOW I love this. Thanks for taking the time to put this together and show us this collection. This is one of the most cohesive, beautiful collections that they've ever released in my opinion. When she came out, I didn't collect items/clothes as much as I collected dolls themselves, and there's a lot of regret there because oh my it's all so lovely. My only complaint about the collection is the doll herself.. those darn side bangs. I'm still glad to have her because she's so sweet regardless.

Lol I don't mind the side bangs at all, but I know plenty of people hate them. And I 100% agree - her collection is more extensive and cohesive than other GOTYs by a long shot, and amazing quality. I mean, the difference between Grace's bakery and Kavi's flimsy plastic stage is...I'll be kind and just call it stark.

I initially bought 26 to use with Grace’s collection in 2015, but then impulse bought Grace a month later because I needed the charm bracelet. It’s still one of my favorite pieces of doll jewelry. My Grace has Caroline eyes, so seeing her with blue looks odd to me now. 🤣 I love the Paris theme as a Francophile, though, so she was a welcome addition. I also love the side bangs with the Josefina mold and her thick eyebrows that 66 also used.

Pretty sure the book and goodies were a Costco exclusive. I got mine there anyway. The set with the pastries was in store only and sold out so fast. I thought that the chef hat was the in store goodie on Jan 1st, but I forgot about the apron so 🤷🏻‍♀️. I missed Graces reveal Day as I was visiting family for the holidays.

That bakery is so freaking expensive, though. I've seen people make replicas but I imagine even those get pricey. And yeah - I think a lot of us really like the names on the GOTY clothes. I took my granddaughter Grace to the Seattle store for her 8th birthday. I got her the doll and all the outfits! I think her Mom got her the baking accessories on that same trip. I never bought her the big ticket items because she had no room in her bedroom and we have 13 grandkids (now w/ 2 great-great grands) so I can’t spend that much on any one of them. Over time I was able to get most of Graces outfits for myself because i adored all of them. I don’t remember any GOTY before Grace having their name on their clothing. I’m not a big collector of the GOTYs so I didn’t realize that they don’t do that any more. Very strange. I actually love the idea it helps keep track of what pieces belong to whom, wonder why they stopped doing that?

Grace came out the last year my daughter was collecting so we didn’t get much. She really only liked the pets/animals and food items I found out later. So it was a given that we got Bonbon. We also got the movie, city outfit and sightseeing outfit. That year the only thing I got was Caroline and her accessories before she was retired. Later on when I started really collecting I got the doll and baking outfit. I can’t remember at the moment if I have her pjs. Once I have access to my doll clothes again I will check and if I don’t I will have to rectify that situation. I think it would be nice to also have the travel coat and opening night outfit but I’m not in a horrible rush to get them. I think her collection is cute but I think I like the collections of Joss, Lea, and Blaire better. I also really like the NASA/space theme of Luciana but she isn’t my favorite doll and I loathe her meet dress. I think the most disappointing collections are the earlier GOTYs (Lindsey, Kailey, Marisol and Jess). I hate to say it but I’m also not a fan of Kavi’s collection. I hope the next girl has a collection that I really like. To me a lot of Kavi’s items (especially the bigger items) seem closer to OG sizing & quality for AG prices. I also wish they would just be released with their book instead of the journals. It seems like a BS money grab to have the actual book sold separately at a later date. Just my 2 cents.

I love Lindsey because a) she came out the year Anika was born and b) her book depicts just a normal, typical kid and I LOVE that. But yeah, her collection was miniscule and not impressive. It feels like Grace's collection came out in the heyday of the GOTY line. I love Lea the doll but don't care as much for her collection. Love Blaire's collection and the surf-related stuff from Joss's and HARD agree about the BTIs from Kavi's collection feeling more like OG (which would be fine if the pricing matched).

I kinda have a little regret because they are crooked but can’t change it now. Also I’ve always wanted Grace’s collection. I’ve been desperately pining after it since it first came out. Couldn’t afford it since I was just a teenager. And now I’m waiting for a good deal/ opportunity to acquire it

That's a great question. Personally, I have yet to find ANY good AG deals at our local thrift stores. Could be just my bad luck but I've had much better luck focusing on FB Marketplace. I have a friend who lives nearby and she stalks Once Upon a Child stores by following all their IG accounts and she says she's scored several times that way.

As far as Grace’s coat goes, the buttons are to give it an appearance of being a double breasted coat. I’ve seen it done successfully with past coats they have made but this one could be better at trying to pull that off.

I'm pretty sure the blue Bonbon t-shirt was a store exclusive. My Grace is a VISUAL doll and she came with that t-shirt (I bought her second hand), so that's why I'm guessing it was a store exclusive. And I LOVE that t-shirt and I'm so glad I have it! I also have her PJs and love having her name on everything. I'm not sure when that started or when it ended. Did you end up getting an answer? I believe the Bonbon shirt was an in-store thing you got if you did a Grace-themed party at the bistro in-store. And it looks like Grace, Lea, and Isabelle were the only three GOTYs to have personalized clothing tags.

I also like the named tags on the goty because then the clothes are distinctly part of that outfit. Like my Isabelle clothes all have her name on the tag. @@agtakesover oh interesting. Learned something new. I’m not as well versed on my goty trivia. I can almost accurately know the years of each character and I can identify the dolls and what’s in their collection to some extent from what I remember but I never really got into them so I don’t have a lot of goty clothes/ accessories in my collection. I’m working on changing that tho because I have a wishlist of some of the goty and their collections. Particularly Kanani, Luciana (I love her space collection and had wanted her collection so bad but I had no money, I was 18 and in hs still), and Grace’s collections. I also want to get Sonali in my collection. And I wouldn’t mind finding Lindsey’s things too because I do have the doll. I have most of Corinne’s collection, I have some of joss’s collection tho I plan to get more of it, and I have a very small amount of Blaire’s collection and I do want to get some more from that collection too. Like I bought an American girl lunchbox at goodwill a little while back and I use it like it’s a suitcase for my dolls when I travel, I just pack it full of their clothes and accessories that I feel might be needed for the trip.

In defence of Grace labelling her lipgloss, what if her friend sleeps over and has the same lipgloss. Don’t want to mix those up. My friend and I have the same chapstick. My friend just peeled the label of theirs tho and that’s how we knew who’s was who’s

After Grace, the details and cohesiveness of a collection went somewhat down. I think her collection was the pinnacle of what AG produced in "modern times". They should hire whoever was in charge of this for future sets and books. Seriously!

I cannot agree with this enough. I feel like she represents the peak of the GOTY line in terms of depth and breadth and cohesion. She had a movie, the full book count, big release events with gifts worth keeping, and you could even do a Grace-themed party at the store bistros. I understand companies change to stay relevant and profitable and I hope the changes Mattel/AG has made help them do just that. But I do confess I would love to see that kind of approach to the GOTY line again and I'm a little jealous of folks who collected through that era.
