For those who don’t understand. We raise our guitar behind the musician as a nod to their talent. Been doing it for 40 years. Has nothing to do with self-attention. It is an honor to the one you are pointing to. From the jazz scene to Johnny Cash, it is the equivalent of bowing at the master’s feet while playing a song.

Well, just so you know, it looks silly and it detracts from the musician being highlighted. I've played rock for years as well as country and finally bluegrass. Odd, I've never seen some jackass trying to show off the talent by raising his instrument high into the air. In bluegrass you raise the guitar for one reason - so the sound hole is near the mic, and then you play a G run. And that's it. Otherwise you play normally. As far as showing off the talent, the rest of the musicians control the dynamic during each break so it is quite obvious who is taking the break (instrumental solo). When the break is over, the knowledgeable crowd will often applaud for a brief moment, and even _they_ do not need direction from the clown on stage. The sound crew seemed oblivious to what was actually going on musically as the musical standouts were largely ignored (except for the silly guitar thrusting bullshit). just sayin'

I absolutely love all the musicians on this stage, - it’s so exciting to see Molly, Sierra, & Bronwyn with Dirks Bentley on the CMA Awards! Their talent deserves to shine, but unfortunately, the sound mix didn’t do them justice. Dirk’s lead vocals are clear, but the acoustic instruments & harmony singing are lost in a mix that feels more suited for a rock arena than an acoustic performance. Sierra Hull’s incredible mandolin playing-so clean, sweet, & precise-is barely audible even during her solo. Molly Tuttle’s fantastic guitar picking, known for its clarity, tone, & speed, also struggles to cut through, & her solo sound came up too late to fully appreciate her playing. Bronwyn Keith-Hynes’ fiddle is the only instrument that holds its own against this mix. The harmonies should be balanced at the same level with the lead vocals to bring out the richness of the performance. It’s frustrating that the sound engineering missed the mark on capturing the dynamics & nuances of acoustic instruments & vocal harmonies. I hope future productions can ensure the mix highlights all the incredible talent on stage. These musicians deserve it!

The Dierks guy is okay or whatever (I am being slightly facetious) but the mix did no justice to the female vocals - such an important part of that epic song and it got washed out. The all-important bass line at the beginning also got lost. But I'm glad that Molly, Bronwyn, and Sierra at least got some solo time to show the boys what's up. Such depth of talent between those three, it's amazing.

I don’t think anyone should be criticizing Dirks, because he did bring them to perform and get their CMA exposure. However, as excited as I was for the performance and the girl power of this trio, it was horribly planned and staged. Who needs all those back up players in the background with these talented musicians? And when it came time to highlight their solos? The sound was horrible. The CMA‘s are usually better than this, at least in terms of their sound quality. And while I don’t think Dirks was trying to take away from the women with his more showy guitar moves, I do personally think he should’ve kind of stepped back out of the way during the solos, and let those three have the spotlight. But more than anything it’s the bad sound that ruins the whole thing.
