Idk, I'm seeing a few inaccuracies, like where the Colt "peacemaker" moniker comes from. It's pretty widely accepted that it refers to the 1873 Single Action Army, and given by a salesman that worked for Colt. That's relatively minor compared to the omission of why the Mormons were chased to Utah, that they settled there by wiping out the natives who lived there (then ambushed random American settlers passing through to the west as revenge for being chased out). Which is to me important background as to how the Browning family's outfitting of the Mormon with firearms led to them acquiring enough wealth to create a successful business.

Yet whenever SHTF they'll immediately call gun toting police, or if wealthy, private armed bodyguards. One thing this documentary completely overlooks, is JB and his brother designed EVERY cartridge for their rifles,. Machine guns, and pistols. They revolutionized the ballistic sciences and their innovations have become the basis for modern cartridge design.

This man was a true genius . I have 5 different rifles of different calibers from Browning and 3 Shot guns 12ga and a 16ga . I love them almost as much as one of my kids . I think this is one of the best videos of Browning out there anywhere . Wish I could have been around back then to shake his hand.

I learned to bird hunt with my Father’s Browning auto loading shotgun (12 Ga), manufactured by Remington. I looked the serial number up a number of years ago. The gun was manufactured in 1912. My son has it today. Still shoots just fine. The fore stock was broken a number of years ago, so that has been replaced, and I recall the firing pin being worked on/replaced while I was still a teenager. Other than that, it’s all original equipment. My Dad was born in 1908, and bought the gun, used, sometime in the 1920s. It’s an amazing weapon.

Also have an A5 from Belgium. Dad was a police officer and purchased one from a neighbor who couldn’t use it anymore or 50 dollars. Of course I used it to hunt. Later I had a variable scope mounted on it and it is an awesome deer shotgun shooting slugs at 100 yards with ease. It is still in perfect condition. ❤

3/'21/2023 Beca8se of my training, while in the Navy 1965-69, (AO-3) I was exposed to several Browning designed military weapons. none ever failed in quality. The model 1911-A1 as what the navy generally used. I, myself could detail strip and reassemble one in just under 90 seconds (blindfolded) and just short of 60 seconds (looking) I was considered a bit slow. Unknown to many the 1911A1 had one flaw. The small part called the disconnector was prone to breaking if fired too often, without maintenance, and would go full auto. I also had access to 6 of the Woodsman target pistols. I maintained them also. For me, the Woodsman is the finest hand gun I ever handled. What a nice historical story. Great job Fess. ;-)

The 1911 is still the greatest pistol of all time, and will be until the end of days. The photo I use for my profile is my grandfather in 1942 in the aleutian islands, he was then a year younger than I am now (and honestly I look like his twin). His 1911 and its holster is in my possession and will be until I pass it on to my children, and it will still shoot the same as it did when he first was issued it in 1941. He went on to be a dermatologist, a professor of medicine at UPenn and was a VA hospital physician until 1960 when he retired to become a dairy farmer and rural physician. We share a name and I can only aspire to live up to his legacy. Never forget those who came before you, and who afforded you the life you enjoy today, because it didn't come for free.

I have a 1911 .45 that came home from ww1 with my grandfather and it was one of several firearms that he gave to my father before he passed away. my father taught me to shoot with that gun when I was about 14 years old, a few months before he passed from cancer in 2005 he gave that .45 to me and said " jack, you know that its now your responsibility to pass this gun on to your son just as im passing it to you. I'm now 60 years old and even though I still have several years left, I believe tomorrow my son will add it to his growing collection of handguns, ( id say 4 generations and 2 wars is a pretty good record with no end in sight) Thanks Dad for all the love and wisdom , every day that goes by I miss you and think about you

In 1972, in a hot steamy country we were not supposed to be in, ie Cambodia, a model 1911 saved my life, 28 times. My M-16 was malfunctioning due to heavy mud, but I was fortunet enough to have a 1911 and several spare magazines. To this day I keep one in my nightstand, unless the kids or grandkids are coming over, when they are locked up. Thanks John.

This documentary was quite informative. I was unaware of the influence of Mr. Browning in the evolution of firearms. I had always believed that Colt was the inventor of the 1911 pistol, rather than its manufacturer.

Browning was a designer ,not a manufacture . He did make a few rifles early in his career. His designs used common engineering solutions use by many contemporary industries. He was hired by many manufactures to design or perfect designs .

John Browning is the most prolific gun maker to ever live. He is literally the Einstein of gun inventors. Nobody comes close to him.

The most prolific but not the best, many of his designs didn’t survive, or were not as great as other designs by European inventors. His Auto Five was a disaster, a nefastous systems that multiplies recoil, his BAR was a cumbersome, heavy, over engeneered, and expensive to make. His 1911 pistol is one of the least reliable pistols, working reliably good only with Ball ammo, wide tolerances and his extractor requires maintenance, he never invented a machine gun as efficient as a MG40, and some of his pistol designs, like the FN 1900, or the 1910, were hard to dissssemble and a nigthmare of machine operations. A Luger, by comparison, is a lot easier to make than a machined 1911. He never came to the assault rifle or submachine concept. We can say he is and overrated American inventor, and no, he didn’t invent recoil operated guns, many people in Europe had patents before he did in USA, like Lieutenant Piñal in Spain, in 1880.

Funny you say the 1911 is unreliable because it’s the most heavily produced pistol today there are literally dozens of different manufacturers making them. I suppose you never heard of the military’s test on the 1911. No other automatic pistol of the day out performed it, or was more reliable. As far as machine guns go the 50 BMG out performs the MG 40 and it’s still being used in large numbers in military’s today. And the Luger is a much more complicated design and many more parts compared to the 1911. That’s why nobody is making a current Luger. All of your facts and views are wrong. You need to go read up on John Browning. Luger invented one gun so did many gun inventors in history. John browning literally invented dozens of popular designs that are still being made and used today. You need to go back to school buddy cause your 100% wrong. I’m guessing your European cause you can’t admit the obvious.

@@craigthescott5074 I have shot the auto Five. The original one. Made by FN in Belgium. It’s a nigthmare. Huge recoil because the system is poorly conceived. The system was somewhat imitated by Franchi the Italian shotgun maker in the 60s. Same problem: huge recoil. These shotguns are famous here for being “unshotable” for their Browning barrel recoil system. Just try shoot one and compare later to a Benelli inertia system, from the 70s. The 1911 is far more complicated to manufacture than a Luger and its over engeneered. We are no longer shooting Lugers because Germany lost the last war. That’s the reason. When it comes to mud and dust, a Luger, or an Astra 400, are far more reliable than a 1911. Just check Forgotten Weapons mud tests on both Luger and 1911. About the 50 mm Browning, not comparable to a general purpose infantry and vehicle weapon like the MG42, a really masterful design still in service in NATO, known today as MG3 in 7,62x51. The 1911 is the most popular pistol in shooting clubs....specially in the USA. Here the Brno Cz 75 is probably the most popular. In the Police and military field, no one in Europe or Assia uses the 1911....it’s not reliable.....and the SA trigger is not the best for safe handling by non experts. You need to overcome your “only in the US syndrome”. Browning was the most prolific designer, but not the best. Many of his designs are complicated, difficult to manufacture, like his winchester 92, or 94, far less reliable than a 1873, though stronger. Other people designed fewer guns, went even anonymous, but those guns were far better than many of Browning’s designs. Mondragón, for instance, designed a semiauto rifle 100 times better than a BAR. A BAR is the perfect example of a cumbersome design.

And modern 1911’s and 2011’s are extremely reliable that’s why they dominate in competition shoots here in the US. The 1911 trigger is also the best in the business even over 100 years later, nobody has made a better pistol trigger than browning. The BAR is very well made the only drawback would be its weight. The fact of the matter is Browning invented dozens of reliable and popular weapons. Most gun designers would be happy with one solid design in a lifetime Browning had so many most people can’t keep track of them. The bottom line is Browning has the most guns still in use and being manufactured today over any other gun designer. And that’s a fact you can’t argue with. He was the Einstein of weapons designers hands down wether you like it or not.

@@craigthescott5074 the Luger is easier to manufacture, because parts like the barrel, can be made by quite simple lathe operations,and the machining of the frame, involves quite simple operations from the sides and from above that can be made with standar milling machines and adequate jigs. A 1911 slide, however, and the frame too, requiered, in its day, special machinery, involving more than 200 milling operations, compared to the less than 150 requiered for a Luger, as these operations were not easy or possible to make with standard milling machines, I visited the Colt factory some years ago, as a gun journalist and dealer, and they still had in working order special machinery made for the 1911 in the 1920s and 30s. It was really a expensive pistol to make, more than a Luger.

I have a 3032 covert. The casing wedged in the barrel because it had no projectile in it plus it had been fired and expanded. If you have a failure on a live round you literally hit the tip up barrel release and the round flies out by itself. Smack the bottom of the mag and rack the slide. This is where training with your firearm comes into play.

It must have been crazy seeing this man's designs first being used. It would be like if some guy invented a laser gun today. His guns are still very popular and they definitely were some of the best weapons of the 20th century making everything that came before obsolete. Millions of American soldiers and civilians were saved because they were using one of his creations. That's the ultimate testament to a brilliant firearms designer.

Having studied weapons and their evolution, the thing that facinates me most is Johns realisation that the residual power still momentarily residual pressure in the barrel milliseconds after the bullets exits, can be utalised to reload and fire ,blowback weapons, then gasport weapons. ... The other is that during the US Civil war, Mauscut cramrods were used for other uses which damaged and miss shaped the widest part, resulting, with constant use = rough rifling in some stooters weapons = unexpected accuracy with the expansion of lead shots. Hence rifling was eventually developed there from. But John was some man for one man. RIP John. Your descendants are mighty proud of you, what more could he have wished for?

I had a Hi-Power that my dad taught me to shot with. The first gun I bought for myself was a Rossi 92 Lever action .44mag. I wish I still had them. I now have a Lev-Tac M92 .357mag that I luv, so fun to shoot!!! My next purchase will be a 1911. I like the Kimber but likely will only be able to afford the Rock Island! :-( I wonder, with all the different companies making clones of his designs, how many John Moses Browning designed gun were made? I wonder what he would think of the Lev-Tac M92? While it is all black with a synthetic stock and M-lock fore-grip it is functionally the same gun Browning designed in 1892 for Winchester. I have posted pictures of to Twitter and asked if it was an "Assault Riffle". I have had dozens of liberal gun grabbers say yes just to have me laugh at them and call them out for their irrational fear/hatred of guns.

Browning is without a doubt a gun engineering genius. When he designed the 1911 the 45 ACP casing, which it's chambered for, can act as a quick replacement for the recoil spring plug.

*** Love the video & thanks to Fess Parker. However, he made an incomplete statement at the 21:30 mark. The Colt-Browning 1895 machine gun was NOT nicknamed the Peacemaker alone. More specifically, it was called the Browning Peacemaker by some of the soldiers, for a brief time in the Spanish-American War. The original, stand-alone Peacemaker moniker goes to the Colt Single Action Army Revolver of 1873. In addition, the more correct & long-lasting nickname for the 1895 Machine Gun was the " Potato Digger " based upon the camming action of the gas-operated lever, on the front of the gun. Other than that, this was a great historical video, about the greatest firearms inventor the world has ever known. God bless you, John Moses Browning & may you always rest in peace.

Under this roof an original 1885 low wall 22 LR, a Model 92 converted to 218 Bee, a Model 94 30-30 carbine. Several M37 & M87 Ithaca shotguns. One Colt 1991A1 and a Remington Model 8 in 35 Remington. A 1901 Winchester 10 gauge. Lots here. Trivia. The Swiss Vatican Guard was one of the very last military units to issue the .32 Browning 1900 pistol. It was know to be accurate as well as very reliable.
